I hope this goes through this time

Hi! I have a Problem with a Biohazard background and constant popups redirecting to some websites for spyware, malware removal, it pops up every minute or so starting with a windows warning for a trojan 32w looksky.

This is what happens,

1. Windows Security Alert box pops up with the message "Windows has detected an Internet attack attempt . . . Click here to download spyware for total protection." I click the 'x' in the corner to get rid of the box.
2. Safewebnavigate comes up, then switches to a "Your PrivacyGuard" box which asks me to click 'OK'. I click the 'x' to remove the box. yourprivacyguard.com comes up as a full screen along with another Windows Security Alert box. I click the 'x' in the corner of both.
3. Safewebnavigate comes up immediately along with a security box asking if I wish to install YourPrivacyGuard.
4. If I take any time to make notes on the computer behavior all Cain breaks out. A flashing red hexagon with a white 'x' appears in the tool bar at the lower right hand corner of the screen. A half screen Ultimate Defender page appears within a second.
5.Another YourPrivacyGuard security box appears along with a yellow System Alert box above the tool bar in the lower right corner of the screen.
6.Another Yourprivacyguard.com full screen appears. A Security Alert box comes up with a note that Trojan.W32.Looksky has been detected. I click 'no' to the request and 'x' the privacyguard screen

Hi Lostkiwi and welcome to the forums.

My name is Dave. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can sometimes take a while to research so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
  • I will working be on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • NOTE:Before we start: Please be aware that removing Malware is a hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.
In light of this it would be wise for you to back up any files and folders that you don't want to lose before we start, if possible.

==================================================================

Another victim of Smitfraud it appears.

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

**If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C:), and launch from there.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

No, it is probably not what you did. There is a bug in the current version of AVG that sometimes doesn't allow saving the file. We should be OK.

Just some cleanup and I would like to see a full Kaspersky scan on this.

Run HijackThis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

O2 - BHO: MSVPS System - {ECBD04D1-1133-4480-8A8C-BC9FDD54D6C1} - C:\WINDOWS\div32.dll (file missing)

Then close all windows except this one and press Fix checked.

——————————————————————–

Using Internet Explorer, click on Kaspersky Online Scanner * Click 'Accept' in the window that pops up.
* You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click on the information bar and select Install ActiveX Control if so. This may happen more than once. That is OK. You also may get a warning from your Windows Firewall. You can tell it to unblock.
* The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
* Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click 'Next'.
* Now click on 'Scan Settings'
* In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
o Scan using the following Anti-Virus database: 'Extended' (If available, otherwise 'Standard')
o Scan Options: 'Scan Archives' and 'Scan Mail Bases'
* Click 'OK'
* Now under 'Select a target to scan' select 'My Computer'
* The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete, it will display whether your system has been infected.
* Now click on the 'Save Report As…' button:
* Make sure it says Save as a text file - change it if not
* Save the file to your desktop.
Please post the Kaspersky report and a new HijackThis log.
Ok then,

Please find attached below the HJT report followed by the Kaspersky report. Kaspersky says I still have problems!

Scan process completed.
Hello,

Not too bad, most of what was found is in your restore points, which we'll clean out at the end, and the Smitfraud tool, which is normal. You can also empty your Norton Quarantined files. Just one file to delete that is a leftover from Smitfraud I believe.

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.
Please reverse this process once the fix is complete.

Using Windows Explorer delete the following file.

C:\WINDOWS\advpn.dll

Delete the Smitfraud.exe tool.

How is it running now? Let me know.
Aahhhhh NUTS!! I've selected show hidden files and folders but i can't see C:\WINDOWS\advpn.dll Ive attached a screen dump so you can have a look and tell me what i'm missing! Also is the smitfraud exe tool to be deleted or is there an uninstall?

Attachments:

Hi Dave, I did a search for the ".dll" file and deleted it, and I've deleted the smitfraud exe. m/c seems ok, but I guess I need to start a new thread to try and slim down an exceptionaly bloated windows folder. Windows is 20GB! your thoughts would be most welcome Thanks for everthing :thumbup:
Wow, 20GB just in the C:\Windows folder only? Or in your hard drive? If that's just your Windows folder only then something isn't right. Shouldn't be more than a few GB 3 or 4? Mine has about 4GB. Do you store things in there? Files, ect…? Can you identify which folder is taking up so much space? You could try this:

Use ATF Cleaner to remove temp files,
cookies, cache, ect…

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 onlyDouble-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

Don't know how much it will help but I use this tool about once a week anyway.

Let me know if you can identify what is taking up so much space.
Hi Dave, Well i've had a look at all the files (hidden as well) and there is nothing that stands out. I have gone through each file in the windows folder and by adding the sizes of all the files together i get around 4GB, and about 700MB of "$NTUninstall…" folders. The largest folders are, Fonts…98.6MB Help…..40 MB IME…….86.2MB Driver cache…87MB But nothing that takes up another 16GB!!! I've left it far to late to do a diskfrag thing as i'm running with only 500MB left on the C:/ drive out of 25GB. I do know a mate of mine partitioned some of the C:/ drive for MS Office, but i'm not sure how much. I ran the ATF cleaner you mentioned, and on my log on it cleard up 50MB, then i loged in through my wifes logon and ran it again, I'm sure it told me it had cleaned 1 000MB but only made a difference of about 100MB. There are no files that we have saved in the windows foder and i've uninstalled pretty much all of our extra software for the cameras etc and all the music from the C./ drive and placed it on the D:/ drive, but it made no difference and in fact since i started doing this a couple of weeks back the windows folder has grown from around 18.5GB to 19.8GB today! ANY IDEAS!!!……………before the whole bloody thing shits itself? Cheers Mate!
Hi, I'm still researching this and trying to find out what's going on. One thing, how big is your system32 folder within the Windows folder? You gave me what you thought were the largest folders but system32 should be bigger than those, even normally.
Okay that's normal. Are we missing any others?

Are you sure it's the Windows folder alone that is around 20GB, or the whole hard drive?

There are worms that can cause this to happen. Are you having any other symptoms of malware activity at this point?

Let's get a DSS scan.

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt – please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.
