Poppup Spyware Alert
Yesterday 8/1/07 The following happened at logon. I have worked most of yesterday and today to no avail. Any help is appreciated. Here is what has happened and the steps I've taken so far.

It starts with a IE popup:
"Security Warning!

Trojan.W32.Looksky detected on your machine. This virus is dietributed via the Internet through email and ActiveX objects. The worm has its own STMP engine which means it gathers e-mails from your local computer and redirects itself....This process should be removed from you system.
Type: Virus
System Affected: Windows 2000, NT, ME, XP, Vista
Security Risk (0-5): 5
Recommendations: Click Yest to remove it from your PC immediately."

If 'yes' is selected then a new window appears with "SecurePCCleaner may find dangerous traces that need to be cleaned. Don't let your privacy and reputation to be ruined by them. Making your private information public an cause problems with your boss, family and friends. Click 'OK' to start SecurePCCleaner scanner to remove compromising traces and setup controls to protect your privacy by cleaning or removing dangerous information."

If I select OK, three new windows popup over several minutes.
Regardless of my action, it also adds three shortcuts to desktop:
1. Error Cleaner
2. Privacy Protector
3. Spyware&Malware Protection

If I click 'cancel'...
It then redirects to: http://www.safewebna...s...;pn=0&pid=1
This site relaunches every one/two minutes regardless of action taken (end now, cancel or 'x')

Replaces wallpaper with one of its own - red background with chemical warning sign and:
"YOUR PRICACY IS IN DANGER!
DOWNLOAD PRIVACY PROTECTION SOFTWARE NOW"

I ran Norton360, Webroot Spy Sweeper and Adaware, which took about 5 hours (!) and all found traces and deletion of them cleaned things up during that session. They also found and quaritined Trojan-ace-x and Trojan - downloader-zlob, and produced a MRU list with 7 objects. The quaritine cleaned up the desktop and wallpaper during that session. After reboot everything came back, so today I ran the following.

1. Spybot Search - it cleared a bunch of hits.

2. HiJackThis - it returned the following:

Welcome to the Forums.

The fixes we will use are specific to your problems and should only be used for this issue on this machine.

Please only use this topic to reply to. Do not start another thread.
If any other issues arise let me know.
The process is not instant. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear. So lets do this to the end!
  • All hijackthis logs I ask for should be done in normal mode ( not safe mode)
  • These logs should be done last after you have followed my instructions in the previous post.

Please if you decide to seek help at another forum let us know. There is a shortage of helpers and tying 2 of us up is a waste of time.
If you have any questions about any advice given here please STOP and ask!

You have 2 infections here. We will get the first one then look into the second. Which should go away easy enough.

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.sub.../Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingc.../Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

Next:
Click Start> Run> type in CMD tap enter key
Copy/Paste: ipconfig /flushdns

Once the desktop loads please post the text that will open (report.txt) and a new Hijackthis log.

If you have internet connection problems do this:

Please go to Start -> Control Panel, and choose Network Connections.
Then right click on your default connection, usually Local Area Connection or Dial-up Connection if you are using Dial-up, and left click on properties.
Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and select the radio button that says Obtain DNS servers automatically. Click OK twice, and restart your computer.

At the end of the fix, you may need to restart your computer again.

Finally, please post a fresh HijackThis log, along with the contents of the logfile C:\fixwareout\report.txt

Now lets check some settings on your system.
(2000/XP) Only
In the windows control panel. If you are using Windows XP's Category View, select the Network and Internet Connections category otherwise double click on Network Connections. Then right click on your default connection, usually local area connection for cable and dsl, and left click on properties. Click the Networking tab. Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS servers automatically
Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks.
That option might not be avaiable on some systems
Next Go start run type cmd and hit OK
type
ipconfig /flushdns
then hit enter, type exit hit enter
(that space between g and / is needed)

Smitfraud by S!ri

______________________________

  • Double clcik the smitfraud.exe
  • When promted
    Press any key to continue.
  • Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter
This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. When it is done, the results of the scan will be displayed and it will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with any others I have asked for in your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user. When prompted by allow it to run

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other options until you are asked to do so!

In your next reply I would like to see:

Bob4: I made two mistakes, one from frustration, one by virtue of being XY and not reading to the end of your instructions.

I started the steps two days ago, but the hijacking just seemed to get worse every step I took. This morning, working offline, I couldn't get to anywhere without all the IE and MSN windows popping up.
I got totally frustrated and figured what the hell, I'm one step from rebuilding this sucker, so I went on the offensive. I ran a search against *.tmp and ended up with a list of 876 files and folders. When I was finished, the ones left were for Norton, Spysweeper and Ad-Aware. The noise settled down, but the logon windows still popped up, but a lot less often, allowing me to finish your instructions.

Here are the logs:

What's the next step if any?

Bob4; Well, I've left my laptop on and on-line for the last couple of hours and hurray!!! The onslaught has stopped. Hopefully that will continue. THANK YOU! for all the support and links to the right tools. You guys are awesome. I hate to ask, but is there a particular site or link that is spreading this malware? Even with multiple safeguards it got through. Again, hopefully this is the end and again... thanks! Bill

PLEASE. Read all the directions first this time. Some tools we use if not followed correctly will not work as well or correctly.

DO NOT RUN OPTION 2 ON SMITFRAUD a second time. It will have undesirable effects.

To the best of my knowledge smitfraud is picked up looking for certain codecs files to view certain material.
Not really sure on wareout infection though.

Let's finish this thing.
