All right, late last night I started getting pop-ups saying "Windows has detected an Internet attack attempt… Somebody's trying to infect your PC with spyware or harmful viruses. Run full system scan now to protect your PC from Internet attacks, hijacking attempts and spyware! Click here to download spyware remover for total protection," or "Security Warning! Trojan.W32.Looksky detected on your machine. This virus is distributed via the Internet through e-mail and Active-X objects. The worm has its own SMTP engine which means it gathers e-mails from your local computer and re-distributes itself. In worst cases this worm can allow attackers to access your computer, stealing passwords and personal data. This process should be removed from your system. Type: Virus System Affected: Windows 2000, NT, ME, XP, Vista Security Risk (0-5): 5 Recomendations: Click Yes to remove it from your PC immediately" (yes, 'recomendations' is spelled wrong on the pop-up…) Once the alert box is closed by any means (even using the End Task feature in the Windows Task Manager), it opens an internet explorer page, linking directly to the following URL:
http://www.safewebnavigate.com/index.php?s…;pn=2&pid=1
It also installed three internet shortcuts on my desktop; The first is titled "Error Cleaner," the second is called "Privacy Protector," and the third is called "Spyware&Malware Protector," and all three link to http://virusprotectionproonline.com/shandl…p;pn=2&sg=1
As soon as this happened I opened Spybot S&D, AdAware SE, and McAfee Security Suite, and updated all three, then started scans. Unfortunately, shortly after the scans started, it became apparent that whatever was on the computer was interfering with the scans. So I closed out all the programs and restarted the computer. When I restarted it, I made sure that it didn't automatically connect to the internet, and while it was locked down, I ran all three scans again. Both AdAware and Spybot caught a number of items, but McAfee didn't see anything, and the popups and desktop shortcuts are still around, even after the scans have finished.
Upon finding this site, I downloaded HJT and ran a scan with logfile… here's what I got:
I also checked the log in McAfee, and saw a few items of note; namely that at about 8:15 last night (when the problems first started occuring), something changed my Internet Explorer preset URLS, and McAfee allowed it without asking me. When AdAware was run, it was changed again (back to its original, presumably), then it was changed again at about 4:30 this morning. I run Firefox, so I haven't noticed yet, but…
I checked a few things, but couldn't find anything listing those particular websites as being bad. When I searched for "Virus protection pro online" on google, over half the resulting sites were listed as causing "Red" downloads by McAfee…
Any suggestions? The popups are getting really problematic…
