I came across this site today. Maybe it might help you until another more experienced volunteer other than me comes by.

Here is an update.
I have no device manager screen showing up when I click that link, just the window where the device information should be and a blank white field. I have no sound, just the beep tones that come out of the mini speaker in the tower box. I can't install windows updates from the update page. I had to start my computer with the "last known good configuration" because now when I boot up I get the blue screen of death then the computer reboots. I am not sure what else is working, or not working because I am just trying to manage the few things that I know are screwed up.
PLEASE, I need help! Any ideas PLEASE… I am not sure that I will be able to reboot and get this thing running again to get the information you give me so it feels time critical here….
should I post a new hijackthis log in the forum as these problems weren't there when I posted the last one?
I stand to lose all of my business files because I wasn't smart enough to listen to my wife and create a back up for them. She can't even turn on a computer but she knows that much…

Hi, Sorry to hear about the problems with your machine.
I think its a question now of establishing priorities…..
Before you do anything, Yes anything at all, your number one priority must be to:
Make sure that your backup/archive/copy of all your important business and other files, drivers, settings, including email and Internet, data files etc, is absolutley 100% up to date, correct and reproducible. To be on the safe side also copy your backup/archive/copy to removable media like an external (USB) hard drive or DVDs or CDs, or even heaven forbid floppy discs!
The important thing is to secure your important stuff…you can then locate your Windows XP Installation disc and product key, all your application installation CD's with their product keys. this will then buy you a bit of time and if you do need to format your drive and reinstall Windows then at least you have a starting point to getting your machine servicable again.
Hopefully you will not need to take such drastic action as a format and reinstall, but the backup/archive/copy will be a good "insurance" for you, anyway.
Clearly you have some system instabilities and problems with your operating system, and we will do our best to help you resolve these and repair important damaged or missing files, so please post back here in this thread when your backup/archive/copy is 100% up to date, correct and reproducible and your HJT log has been examined by a malware removal expert and been declared clean of infection. There may be a wait for your log to be analysed so try to be patient if you can (I know that this can be tough.)
In the meantime good luck and don't let anything get in the way of securing the important stuff on your computer

I have backed up everything that I could. As I did the computer began to lose program function IE not being able to burn any information to a disk, loss of USB function, delayed time in being able to create a zip file… If it can slow down or stop working, it has. I am afraid that reformating is fast becoming the only option to restore functionality… Unless someone comes up with a brilliant idea on how to end this hemoraging of function.
I can wait, but realistically…. well…. time runs short

Hi,
Well done on backing up what you could…..however this must still be your number 1 priority to continue with the back up/archive/copy of all important data, files, settings, etc on your machine. Leave absolutely nothing unbacked up!
I see that you have "replied" twice, to your original post on the malware removal forum and unfortunately this may delay matters, as the malware removal experts tend to look for unanswered posts as as a priority. (two "replies" might indicate to them that an expert has responded to your original post and therefore that you are already being assisted.
It may be far too early to reformat at this stage, so if you can, try to be patient, and wait for a malware expert to respond and once your log has been analysed and declared clean, we will do our best to assist you.

Hi jmsb,
If you have not received a response from an expert on the malware removal forum by tomorrow then it would be best to go here:
