SYSTEM DESCRIPTION:

HP Pavillion 7865 with an AMD 1.2 GHz Athlon processor
Win XP Professional SP2
512 MB Memory
Free disk space 31 GB

Norton Internet Security 2007 - Auto-protect (real-time) running w/scheduled weekly sweeps
AOL 9 w/included Spyware Protection w/weekly scheduled sweeps
-------------------------------------------

PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:

Several days ago, I began getting a pop-up message from my AOL Spyware Protection software that indicated it detected and blocked something called "Command Services". Around the same time, my PC would restart itself whenever I attempted to connect to AOL using the AOL software. (This would not happen when just starting and running the AOL software offline - it happened only when I attempted to logon to AOL. At first, this happened only sometimes. It subsequently began to occur every time I attempted to connect.

Each time the system restarted, a message would be displayed stating that the system had shut down improperly and gave me the option of restarting normally, in safe mode, etc. If I choose normally, the system cannot restart so each time, I choose Last Known Good Configuration. Upon startup, I receive a message from Windows: "The system has recovered from a serious error." I am given the option to send an error report to Microsoft. If I choose to send the report, I am usually directed to a KnowledgeBase article that informs me the system has experienced a 'stop error' that was caused by a device driver. I am then directed to Microsoft KnowledgeBase Article #Q322205 for instructions on how to resolve the problem. I have not followed the steps recommended in that aricle.

Full scans using my Norton Internet Security did not show any issues.

A full scan with Ad-Aware SE Personal did not show any issues.

Shortly thereafter, I received a message from Norton Internet Security each time the system restarted: "Auto-Protect experienced an unexpected error 0x000003E8." When I followed a link to their Knowledgbase that was provided in the message box, it guides me to run the Norton Reinstall Tool, followed by a reinstall of my product.

I installed Webroot's SpySweeper software while Norton was still installed. Upon completion of the installation, the software requested that the system be re-booted in order to complete installation. Upon re-boot, I received the message "The Spy Sweeper installation has been damaged. Please reinstall the product (100)". (This message seems to affect only real-time protection provided by this package; I can still run scans with it.) When I dismiss this message and run a full scan of my system using SpySweeper, it does not report any problem.

When I uninstall and subsequently re-install this product, I get the same message again.

A few days before all this started, I updated my itunes and Quicktime software but everything worked OK for a few days.

A day before all this started, I visited an x-rated site.

So..at the moment:
- My Norton Internet Security is not running and needs to be reinstalled,
- My Spysweeper real-time protection is not running and needs to be reinstalled (but reinstalls don't "take".
- My AOL software cannot connect to AOL servers.
- My AOL Spyware software keeps reporting the presence of "Command Services".

- IMPORTANT: I'd like to save all my emails that are currently in AOL !!!!!!

Thanks, in advance, for your help.

Mark

Hello Mark,

Welcome to the forum, sorry for the delay but we get a bit overwhelmed with logs at times . Your log is hard to read the way you posted it, run HJT again, this time when it opens in Notepad, go to Format and make sure Wordwrap is UNCHECKED.

Run this system cleaner.
Download and Install CCleaner
If you don't want the Yahoo Toolbar, be sure to uncheck it during installation
* Click on Run Cleaner
* Run the Issues Scan < -- After it scans your system, when you click on the Fix button and it asks you to backup the Registry..Say Yes
Tutorial for CCleaner

Post new HJT log please

Hi Ken

Thanks for the welcome. I understand the delay; I am grateful for the help.

I have generated a new log and posted it without word-wrap. I then followed your instructions regarding ccleaner and have created and posted a log after running it.

Hello Mark,

Your log does not look to bad, couple of things you need to be aware of.

C:\Program Files\Paltalk Messenger <-- This is considered Adware and if you don't use it I would suggest uninstalling it via the Add Remove Programs in the Control Panel

Summary of PALSTART.EXE
Adware.PalTalk.Process

Company Information
PalTalk, Inc.
www.paltalk.com

Description of PALSTART.EXE
PalTalk is an IM client that is advertising supported. It may not be harmful to have on your computer, but it will serve various types of advertising.

Adware applications, toolbars and browser extensions may serve advertisements even while you are not surfing the Internet.

This application may serve various types of advertising, not limited to pop-up ads.

C:\Program Files\Viewpoint <-- This is not malicious but installs without your knowledge or consent and is not needed for anythng, I would suggest removing this also.

If you remove PalTalk, remove these entries with HJT.

Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

O4 - Startup: PalStart.lnk = C:\Program Files\Paltalk Messenger\palstart.exe
O9 - Extra button: PalTalk - {4EAFEF58-EEFA-4116-983D-03B49BCBFFFE} - C:\Program Files\Paltalk Messenger\Paltalk.exe

I am not looking at Command Service on your log, Lets run Spybot Search and Destroy, after you set it up and run it, make sure your in the Advanced Mode and go to Tools > View Report and check just Include Results of Last check and the Startup list.

You can use the links in my signature to download and install Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4

If you have the older version 1.3, remove it via the Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel.

  • During Installation, just follow all the defaults.
  • Go to Mode and click on Advanced Mode
  • Then to Updates Search for Updates
  • If you get a Bad Checksum Error, just choose a different download location.
  • Then to Settings/ File Sets and take the checkmark out of Usage Tracks
  • Then to Tools/ Hosts Files click on Add Spybot S&D Hosts Files.
  • Then to Tools/ IE Tweeks and put a checkmark in Lock the Hosts Files
  • Then to Immunize. Up at the top by the GREEN SIGN, click on Immunize.
  • Then to Search and Destroy/ Check for Problems
  • Let it scan your system
  • Then to Fix Problems and fix all it finds.
  • Reboot your computer.

Let me see the Spybot report and a New HJT log please.

Hi Ken

I uninstalled Paltalk Messenger.

Viewpoint's screens indicate it works in conjunction with AOL to play certain media, but I decided to follow your suggestion to remove it. There were two entries in Add / Remove Programs within Control Panel: Viewpoint Manager and Viewpoint Media Player.

When I attempted to remove Viewpoint Manager, my system immediately restarted. Upon the completion of the restart, I attempted to remove Viewpoint Media Player and was successful. Then I tried again to remove Viewpoint Manager. This time I received a message stating that it appeared that it had already been removed and I was asked if I would like to remove it from the program list within Add / Remove Programs. I replied Yes.

I then proceeded to follow your instruction to run HJT in order to remove the 04 - Startup and 09 - Extra button entries. The 04 - Startup entry was not present when I ran HJT, however, I did remove the 09 - Extra button entry.

I don't understand what you meant when you wrote "I am not looking at Command Service on your log".

I installed and ran Spybot S&R, per your instructions and re-booted.

Following is the Spybot report followed by a new HJT log.

Cordially,

Mark
(born in the Bronx, former Norwalk resident)

As far as Viewpoint, remember I said it was not malicious but your call to remove it, if you need or use it by all means keep it.

You can remove this with HJT

Viewpoint is still running as a service so you can remove this also.

I don't understand what you meant when you wrote "I am not looking at Command Service on your log".

This was on your original post, sometimes its malware but I don't see it on your log.
Several days ago, I began getting a pop-up message from my AOL Spyware Protection software that indicated it detected and blocked something called "Command Services".

I am and never have been a big fan of any software by AOL, a few issues back of PCWorld Magazine, they listed the 10 Best and 10 Worst software and you guessed it, AOL came in first for the worst.

Hi Ken I did not remove the entry for logmein as I currently do use that remote access service. I did remove the entry for Viewpoint Manager service using HJT. This resulted in a message being displayed that indicated a restart of the PC would be necessary for this change to take effect. I restarted the PC, ran HJT again and found that entry was still present. I then removed it again and restarted the PC only to find the entry is still there. The symptoms I originally described are still present: The AOL Spyware protection software continues to periodically report the presence of and blocking of "Command Services". The starting of AOL continues to cause the restart of the PC approx. 99% of the time. The real-time antivirus protection of Norton Internet Security 2007 remains disabled due to a "damaged installation". Same for Webroot's SpySweeper. (I know many people dislike the AOL software. I, personally, have had few problems with it. On those occasions I did have issues, I found their tech support completely useless. Their only response to problems seems to be "reinstall the software".) After we resolve this issue (I hope we will), I will probably move to using MS Outlook 2007 to retrieve my AOL mail as I cannot rely on their email client any longer. Plus, it's functionality has been lagging for years. There are still other functions within AOL I would like to continue using. By far, however, most important is being able to access my old mail within the AOL client software.) What next, Ken? Mark (formerly of Laurelton, Queens in addition to other places mentioned)

This will check for CMD Service.

Please download and unzip Ren-Cmdservice to your desktop.
It will only work correctly if the folder is placed on your desktop and extracted.
  • Open the ren-cmdservice folder by doubleclicking it.
  • Then doubleclick the ren-cmdservice.bat file to run the program.
  • A text file will open when it is finished, Post it please.
  • Then restart the PC

  • Go to Start> Run and type in services.msc then press Enter
  • Scroll down to Viewpoint Manager Service
  • Double Click that service to open it.
  • Click on Stop Service.
  • Then change the Startup Type to Disabled.
  • OK your way out of the program.
Let me see the log from cmdservice and a new HJT log.

Ken

Per your instructions, I ran services.msc . The Viewpoint Manager Service was already stopped. I changed the Startup Type to disabled and saved the change.

Following is a new HJT log.

(As I write this posting, the AOL Spyware Protection message box just popped up again, informing me that "We have found and blocked Command Services.".)

Mark,

Command Service is legit, but there is a trojan by that name and your system is not infected with it.

We may have been chasing our tail for nothing. Read this and the post by Pete.

http://www.bullguard...ices_39958.html

Regarding the AOL spyware issue concerning "blocked Command Services," it is beginning to look like AOL might have shot itself in the foot. I've been reading lots of posts about this, beginning on about Monday of this week. It is their Spyware Protection program that is giving the error message, but it looks like the Command Services reference may be related to its own software. If you block it (or allow Spyware to block it as it does by default), then funky things may begin happening on your PC, including your INABILITY to run other malware checking programs or even running AOL itself. Suggestion: Try unblocking the item OR try turning off AOL Spyware manually. Then try running any malware, etc., checking programs you want to run. OR try AOL again. Also, see if your Blue Screen error goes away. In other forums and other posts, no one has so far found this "Command Services" to be a real baddy. Only AOL's Spyware says it is. But just to give yourself some freedom to run programs or spyware checkers, try not blocking it. Lots of people are encountering it, and it all seems related to AOL and Spyware. It looks quite scary when you see the Blue Screen, which for me requires a button push to reboot. Ctrl-Alt-Del doesn't reboot for me. But it looks like a "false positive."

A day before all this started, I visited an x-rated site. <-- Keep in mind that the lowlife that run these sites look like they spent the night in a dumpster and use it as there main residence.

The rest of your log looks fine  This may be an issue with (gassp ken who has his finger in his throat ) AOL Software. You may want to call them and tell them about what your experiencing. Your old mail may be on there server, it may not be lost, don't know. My self, I have a few accounts and use all the free services like Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail and he like.

  • Win Patrol This program will warn you when any changes are being made to your system and give you the option to deny the change.
  • IE-Spyad
IE-Spyad places over 4000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • Firefox 2.0 It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.
  • Zone Alarm Here is a free Firewall from Zone Labs, I wouldn't access the internet without it.
Thanks for stopping by Tom Coyote , I'm glad I was able to help you. :D

Hi Ken

Thanks for that info you found.

Before I posted on this board, I removed the block on the AOL-identified "spyware" but it was not successful. Now I disabled real-time checking as well as disk scans. Then I attempted to access AOL. It once again caused a restart of the PC - but only once more. Subsequent attempted executions of AOL are now working!!! Another thing I noticed is that prior to our clean-up work here, it took as much as 5 minutes to switch between Screen Names (accounts) within the AOL software. Now it only takes a few seconds. A nice improvement.

And, of utmost importance, all my mail is accessible!!!!!!!

So...it seems that I now have to reinstall Norton Internet Security 2007 and SpySweeper and hopefully I will have a smoothly working PC again. Do you have any idea how these two programs got corrupted as a result of this problem?

One final symptom I am still experiencing....my mouse pointer often displays a small flashing optical disc immediately adjacent to the pointer. It will happen consistently after some restarts but not after others. Any idea as to why? This problem began at the same time the AOL issue started.

----
Thanks for your efforts with this problem. I appreciate the help. I was beginning to think the only way out of this problem would be to reinstall AOL or Windows.

And thank you for all the links you provided. I will take the time to read through those materials and educate myself.

As I will be leaving early in the morning for a week-long vacation, I wanted to take the opportunity now to thank you -- before you even respond to this note. And I will donate to this site tonight in recognition of your efforts.

Warm thanks from one kid from the Bronx to another.....

Mark
