Working on my brother-in-laws computer (a used HP OmniBook 4150 laptop running Windows 2000 Professional) and unable to do anything on the internet because of the constant ads that keep popping up. He had AOL until a couple of weeks ago and no problems but switched to Verizon DSL last week and started having this problem.
Tried to install Norton's Internet security 2005 today and it hung part way through?

The log:

Bob
Hello Bob and welcome to TomCoyote. :wavey:

Step 1
Download this tool : LQfix.zip
  • Unzip it to your Desktop.
  • Don't use it yet!
Please download the trial version of Ewido security suite.

Install and Update Ewido:
  • Download and install Ewido security suite.
  • Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop for it to double-click.
    • The program will prompt you to update, click the OK button.
    • The program will now go to the main screen.
  • You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
    • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
    • Click on Start.
    • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the updates are installed, close the program.
Step 2
IMPORTANT! Reboot the computer into Safe Mode (tap F8 during bootup, use arrow keys to select Safe Mode, then hit 'enter').

Doubleclick LQfix.bat that you saved on your desktop before.A dos window will open and close again, that is normal.

Scanning With Ewido:
  • Reboot into Safe Mode (tap F8 during bootup, use arrow keys to select Safe Mode, then hit 'enter').
  • Launch Ewido again.
  • Click on scanner.
  • Make sure the following boxes are checked before scanning:
  • Binder
  • Crypter
  • Archives
[*]Click on Start Scan.
  • Let the program scan the machine.
  • While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK.

[*]Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report.
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report to your desktop.

[*]Reboot the computer to finish the removal process.

Step 3
Reboot into Safe Mode once again and scan with Ewido as instructed above. One of the infection on this computer sometimes takes more than one run to remove completely.

Step 4
Reboot into normal mode and scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread. Include both Ewido logs.
Thanks, will do as directed but not until late tomorrow….have to attend a wedding out of town…..drat! Bob :(
Thanks for all your help, here are the three logs/scans requested, the two ewido scans first and then the HJT log:

Your last log was run with HijackThis in a zipped folder. Be sure to use HijackThis from C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Desktop\hijackthis\HijackThis.exe as in the first log. This is needed as HijackThis makes backups of everything fixed and will be unable to do so from within the zipped folder.

Step 1
Open HijackThis, run a scan, then check the following:

I ran the scan and checked all but one:

O2 - BHO: CExtension Object - {0019C3E2-DD48-4A6D-ABCD-8D32436323D9} - C:\WINNT\cfgmgr52.dll

It wasn't listed in the scan .

Also couldn't find the folowing files:

C:\WINNT\system32\PSof1.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\exp.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\wintask.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\richup.exe
c:\winnt\system32\ucxtpelo.exe

Bob
That one file is still showing in the new log.

Step 1
Click on this link http://www.downloads.subratam.org/KillBox.zip to download Pocket Killbox by Option^Explicit. Extract it from the zip file then double-click on Killbox.exe to run it.
In the 'Paste Full Path of File to Delete' box, copy and paste this entry:

c:\winnt\system32\ucxtpelo.exe

Check the option for "Delete on Reboot". Click the button with the red circle with a white X in it. Click 'yes'. When asked to reboot choose 'yes'.
If you get a "PendingFileRenameOperations Registry Data has been Removed by External Process!" message then just restart manually.

Step 2
Open HijackThis, run a scan, then check the following:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ucxtpelo] c:\winnt\system32\ucxtpelo.exe
O4 - Startup: Freecell.lnk = C:\WINNT\system32\freecell.exe

With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.

Step 3
Reboot normally and scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread.
Please let us know of any complications you had and how the computer is behaving.
Here's the latest log…do we see a light at the end of the tunnel yet?

I only hope that you know how much we appreciate the assistance you've given to resolve this problem.

Your new log appears clean. :)

I see no signs of a Firewall or Antivirus program on your computer. I recommend downloading and installing the following free programs:
ZoneAlarm Firewall
AVG7 Antivirus.

Be sure to check for updates after installation.
Edit : I re-read the first post about NIS. If you can not get it installed now, these are some very good free alternates.

I suggest that you also get these programs to help keep the computer clean:

Spyware Blaster - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer. Spyware Blaster runs silently in the background.
SpywareGuard - Real-time protection from spyware installation attempts
ie-spyad - Puts over 8,000 bad URLs into your restricted sites for Internet Explorer.
Google Toolbar - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
Firefox - 'Safer' alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.

Update these regularly.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-virus updated.
Thanks again for all of your help. We have "Norton's Internet Security" to be installed now that it appears the PC is clean. My brother-in-law attempted to install the Norton software before we contacted you for help and it hung part way through. We plan to try again now that the other problems have been done away with. That should cover the anti-virus and firewall issues. Question about anti-spyware: I have Microsoft AntiSpyware installed and running on my PC, is that good enough or should I also follow your suggestion and install the anti-spyware software you've recommended? Bob
I edited my last post after re-reading the thread. I had forgotton about the failed install of NIS. You may need to go to the Symantec website and search for the uninstall tool for NIS 2005 to fully remove it before trying to install it again. You have Microsoft's Antispyware on the computer but you do not appear to have the Real-time Protection enabled. This is very important to help keep the computer clean. It will prevent much of the junk from getting on your computer. If you enable the Real-Time Protection than you do not need SpywareGuard but I would still get the rest of the recommended programs as they each do specific tasks to keep the computer clean.
