Checking WINDOWS, I came across a cache-cache folder containing the eponymous K file, size 1 kB. Googling it failed; wonder what it is?
Do you use Tony Hawk's Pro Skater game? How about anyone else with access to your machine, or previous to it being yours? eponymous K definition is "to give a name to…" eponymous K is a signature skate board grind move. sound familiar? ______________ Having any annoying symptoms with your machine, or just being curious? ______________ Do you run antivirus and antispyware on a routine basis. Now might be a good time to do so, just for your own peace of mind. :) Best Regards
Hello Doug, Thanks for looking into it! No gaming on this laptop whatever, mine from new. I run SpybotS&D frequently (shows IE Firewall Bypass intermittently, but I use Firefox on most occasions, where only Viewpoint may have some annoying points), AVG Anti-Virus every other day, AVG Anti-Spyware & -Rootkit weekly, check my ZoneAlarm firewall programme access settings from time to time. WinPatrol & SnoopFree switch on at startup. Recently I had to install Quicktime to be able to view a DVD, so it might have something to do with that; Privacy Mantra shows an error when trying to clean Quicktime tracks. I am mainly curious in this instance, but there are occasional CPU surges that defy explanation; often it is Firefox running to excess for no obvious reason. I am mostly worried about sophisticated intrusion, password interception & keyloggers since I have had two mailboxes wiped out in the last year. So I prefer belt & braces. All the best!
Download and run CodeStuff Starters, from here:
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/starter.html

Select the StartUps(tab) to inspect the items that have access to start/turn-on , from the time you boot the machine.

You should see your AV, maybe an antispyware, and that's about all.
If you have additional items in Startups, (like JAVA updater, google toolbar updater, realupdater, MS Office, etc, that could help explain the occasional surge of activity in firefox.

Post a Log, using "Save as Plain Text" if you require assistance in sorting your StartUps.

best regards
I think it could really be helpful to sort out my startups, so here goes the CodeStuff log: Name,Value,Section,Enabled,Description,Company "AVG7_Run","C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVG7\avgw.exe /RUNONCE","Registry - Def User Run","1","AVG 7.5 Launcher (AVG Anti-Virus system)","GRISOFT, s.r.o." I have the same query as richtea… and the same setup. This file appears in a folder called "Physiology" in a folder called "cache-cache". It's a 34 byte "K File" from 2005… and it's just sitting there.
