have been doing your updates ??
are any of your usb devices working ??
have you tried the add hardware function in your control pannel ??
have you tried scanning your pc for maleware ??
do you have any maleware / spyware scanners installed such as spybot search&destroy / ad-aware ??
have you downloaded HJT and run a scan / saved a log and posted in the HJT maleware help forum ??
if you do have an infection you will get better results from that forum for they are the professionals !!
also you can go to pandasoftware.com and run a total scan for free and it will tell you if your pc is infected or you can go to pcpitstop.com and use there free scanner and save a log from there !!!! then return to post it at this forum !!!
also more information about your pc will help as in ( make / model / age / size of memory, running progams as in microsoft office /virus protection / type of internet connetion wireless/hardwire ect.. so the problem can be properly solved

Run your Error Checking Tools on C:\
Then run your Windows File Protection System File Checker
Start - Run - (type)sfc /scannow - Enter <— notice the required space in front of the "/"
Windows XP has Legacy USB drivers, and your MotherBoard may also have Legacy USB.
Reboot into your BIOS/SETUP (various keys for various machines, but usually F1, F10, Esc, of Del pressed at the begining when you reboot.)
Browse around in your BIOS Settings to confirm that Legacy USB is "Enabled".
