Hi kof,
larryri42 has you headed in the right direction, but you may not have ended up at the correct location.
You want an Icon in your TaskTray, down by your Clock. Correct?
Take the following steps:
Press - Start - Control Panel - Network Connections
Network Connection brings up a panel displaying your various active and disconnected Networks.
Right-Click on the one you are presently connected with. (Probably described as Wireless Connection - Status - Connected
When you right-click on your active connection, Select - Properties (from the drop-down menu)
you get a Local Area Connection Status Panel
on the first (tab) General Panel, down at the bottom - there is a line "Show Icon in notification area when connected"
Checkmark/tick the box in front of that line and you will henceforth see a Notification Icon when connected.
best Regards
