Hello, I'm new here :)

My computer has been acting crazy for a while now, but I can't seem to locate the source of the problem. I suspect malware because of the way the computer is behaving, though I'm unsure. So that's why I came to this forum. Here is what's happening:

I have and regularly use McAfee Virus Scan (part of the McAfee Security Center provided by Verizon, my ISP), AdAware 2007 and SpyBot S&D. When scanning with any of these programs, my computer usually shuts down suddenly and completely. If I turn it back on immediately, the computer hangs on the green Gateway screen - which normally flashes on for a second, then goes away when the computer is booting up. While the Gateway screen is up, the hard drive makes a loud whirring noise as if it's working overtime.

Pressing any key other than the power button is fruitless. The only way to get the computer past the Gateway screen is to hit the power button to turn it off, wait a minute or two, then turn the computer back on and wait for Windows XP to boot up.

Also, after this happens, McAfee's "Last Scan Summary" shows the results of the scan prior to the one that shut down the computer, leaving me with no evidence of where the problem is. For instance, right now the last scan details listed are from an automatic scan I aborted, not the last time I attempted to manually scan.

If I'm lucky enough to get a complete scan, McAfee doesn't detect anything and both AdAware & SpyBot only pick up cookies and the MRU list. (I didn't do anything differently that I'm aware of during the few times the computer has been scanned successfully.)

I uncovered an additional problem when trying to figure out what the cause of this is:
If I right-click on something and choose Properties, that dreaded hourglass appears for a bit, followed by the message "DrWatson Postmortem Debugger has encountered a problem and needs to close."
Then Windows Explorer stops responding and I'm forced to use ctrl+alt+delete to end task.

Ever since this started occuring, I've watched the programs as they scan, hoping to see what file or area they hit right before the computer shuts down abruptly. Unfortunately, the files go by too quickly for me to see. :(

It's incredibly frustrating! :rant2:

Because McAfee VirusScan, AdAware 2007 and Spybot S&D were unable to locate what's wrong, I installed these additional anti-spyware/malware/hijacker tools to try to detect and fix whatever is in trouble.

From my ISP:
Verizon PC Security Checkup - computer shuts down during scan.

Recommended at McAfeehelp.com:
SpywareBlaster
SuperAntiSpyware - computer shuts down during scan.
CWShredder - Didn't find anything, so I deleted the program.

Free scans from the Gateway support site:
Webroot's System Analyzer - computer shuts down during scan.
Windows Live OneCare safety scanner - computer shuts down during scan.

I even tried the Windows Malicious Software Removal and of course, the computer shut down during the scan.

I apologize for such a long post; I'm trying to be as detailed as possible for whomever reads my HijackThis log.
Speaking of which, here is my HijackThis log:

Welcome to Tom Coyote . Sorry about the delay in responding but we are as most times just overwhelmed with logs.

I am not looking at anything real bad on your log, you can remove this entry with HJT.

Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

O9 - Extra button: Run IMVU - {d9288080-1baa-4bc4-9cf8-a92d743db949} - C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Start Menu\Programs\IMVU\Run IMVU.lnk (file missing)

What I am looking at is TWO ANTI VIRUS PROGRAMS RUNNING This is a big no no as it will cause you problems, it may or may not be the root of your problem. Its your call but you need to uninstall one via the add remove programs in the control panel.

Authentium AntiVirus <-- One has to go, your call.
McAfee

Clean up your system a bit, run this cleaner.

Download and Install CCleaner
If you don't want the Yahoo Toolbar, be sure to uncheck it during installation
* Click on Run Cleaner
* Run the Issues Scan < -- After it scans your system, when you click on the Fix button and it asks you to backup the Registry..Say Yes
Tutorial for CCleaner

If removing one Virus program and cleaning your system didn't help than it may be a windows or software issue and I can direct you to some windows support forums that deal with these things.

Thanks, Ken :D No worries about the delay - I understand completely. It looks like you guys are swamped!

Okay, this part was initailly weird. I've never heard of Authentium AntiVirus and it wasn't on the add or remove programs list. Searching my computer for the term "Authentium" returned only the location that HijackThis listed (C:\Program Files\Common Files\Authentium). I didn't find an uninstaller inside the ..\Authentium\AntiVirus\ folder, either.
Because I wasn't sure how it was installed in the first place, I searched the web for "uninstall Authentium AntiVirus", which gave me information about where I acquired it. It turns out it came in the Verizon security suite; apparently Authentium comes bundled with a lot of ISP security software. (From what I've read so far, it can also be part of Windows XP's security center.)
I'm including this information just in case someone else goes hunting for how to get rid of it.
I uninstalled Verizon PC Security Checkup and YAY! Authentium is no longer on my computer. :D

Okay, I ran CCleaner, backed up the registry and fixed all but 3 issues. (The 3 are unused file extensions: .php, .phtml & .tpp. I didn't want to remove .php & .phtml because I use PHP on this computer. I have no idea what .tpp is for, though.)

Unfortunately, the problems haven't gone away. It is a huge relief to find out my HijackThis log is listing anything nasty, though! I guess it's time for a referral to Windows support forums.
Thank you so much for your time and willingness to help. I really appreciate it! :D

Thanks for posting back and keeping me updated. I hope your able to resolve your problems in one of these forums.

Windows Tech Support Forums
It's Not Always MalwareSpeedup Windows Windows Tips

How did I get infected in the first place ? Read these links and find out how to prevent getting infected again.

Here are some free programs to install, don't leave home without them
  • Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.
  • Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06
Check for Updates and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.
  • Spyware Blaster It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed.
  • Spyware Guard It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • Win Patrol This program will warn you when any changes are being made to your system and give you the option to deny the change.
  • IE-Spyad
IE-Spyad places over 4000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • Firefox 2.0 It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.
  • Zone Alarm Here is a free Firewall from Zone Labs, I wouldn't access the internet without it.
Thanks for stopping by Tom Coyote , I'm glad I was able to help you. :D
