I have a question regarding Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS)...

How can you tell if BITS is the source of your computer problems?

After spending countless hours scanning WINDOWS DISCUSSIONS GROUPS for information on why Defender and Windows Updates are NO LONGER able to install, I'm convinced that this COULD be the source of the problem - or at least related to it.

According to the information on BITS provided at tomcoyote.com, hackers can infiltrate your computer via BITS... so I'm concerned. :blink:

I'm afraid to change any settings for fear of making things worse, and I'm unfamiliar with BITS settings, or what they should be...

I have a Microsoft Tech walking me through "their" steps right now trying to determine why I can no longer install updates - but no mention has been made by them (yet) of BITS.

Can you offer any info or advice on this issue?

I have a tech assigned to my "case"... and she sent a long laundry list of things to try, which I did -- and nothing changed. The last 2 steps were to send my System Info in a zipped file along with the Windows Update Log -- I sent them to her on Friday, so I assume I'll hear back this week (?). I've tried so many things at this point... I'm starting to worry that nothing's going to work, and that it's a symptom of a larger problem... I'm also concerned that it could be the result of some kind of spyware/virus/worm/etc... I'll be relieved if it's only another microsoft malfunction. ~k.

Below, I'm posting a copy of the suggested steps sent to me from a Microsoft tech.

However, after re-reading the initial email from them this morning, they're confused on which error messages I'm receiving for which program - so I've sent an email back to clarify. Therefore, they may send different steps for me to try.

My issue is this: I cannot download Microsoft Defender Updates -- ERROR FOUND: CODE 0X80240022

I'm directed by Microsoft (via their help tutorials at their website) to scan my system for udpates (from their website), which I did. It stated I needed to update the WINDOWS GENUINE ADVANTAGE TOOL KB892130, which I've tried several times to do -- all unsuccessfully (Windows Updates cannot install).


After reading through the suggested Microsoft Discussion groups that are tackling this same issue, I was directed to check my BITS settings, and suspect that I may have a problem here. Although my BITS settings are "automatic" (vs. manual), it says that BITS is "stopped" (??). In the discussion groups, BITS is identified as the problem for some folks, so I'm thinking this may be my underlying "issue".

If anyone is having this same problem, I'll post the steps Microsoft is suggesting to me here, although so far - none of these steps have resolved my issue (yet).

I hope this helps someone out there who is experiencing the same problem with their Windows Updates!

After reviewing the WindowsUpdate.log file, I found the error code 0x80072EE2.



This issue can occur if any of the following conditions are true:



1. A temporary issue.
2. Some third party background programs, such as anti-virus programs or a firewall blocks access to the Windows Update site.
3. The proxy settings are incorrect or the host file is corrupted.
4. A router which does not allow Windows Update is being used.
5. There is a problem with the server on the Internet Service Provider's (ISP) end that blocks access to the Windows Update site.



At this point, let's try the following steps to troubleshoot the issue.



First, please restart your computer and check the result on the Windows Update website again (http://update.micros...t.aspx?ln=en-us). Also, please check if a router is being used. If so, please remove it and connect to the Internet directly. If the issue persists, let's move on to the following steps.



Suggestion 1: Disable firewalls or other Internet browser programs that can affect the Internet connection
===============================================================================
The following programs can affect the connection to the Windows Update site. I suggest we temporarily remove or disable them:



Download Accelerator
GetRight
Browser Blaster



BitTorrent
eMule
Sygate Personal Firewall



Norton Internet Security
Freedom Firewall
Zone Alarm Firewall



If you have any other similar programs such as a pop-up blocker, please also temporarily remove or disable them to test the issue. Please understand that we are disabling these programs only for the purpose of troubleshooting and we can re-enable these programs after we finish troubleshooting.



Note: The Windows Firewall is on by default and is used to protect the system when third party security programs are turned off or removed.



For detailed information, we can refer to this Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

If this issue appears to be related to a firewall program, I also recommend that you contact the firewall manufacturer to obtain information on how to configure the firewall options to allow access to the Windows Update website.



If the issue persists after we disable a third party firewall program, we can try suggestion 2.



Suggestion 2: Reset the proxy list (and bypass list)
======================================
This issue can occur if the proxy has not been configured correctly. Let's first reset the proxy list.



Note: If any proxy is necessary to the Internet connection, please contact your ISP (Internet Service Provider) before using the commands below to remove the configuration.



1. Open Internet Explorer.
2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
3. Click the Connections tab, click LAN Settings, and then click Advance.



4. Delete any entry in the Exceptions section.
5. Quit Internet Explorer.
6. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
7. Type the following commands. Press ENTER after each command.



proxycfg -u
proxycfg -d
net stop wuauserv
net start wuauserv



After finishing these steps, please go to the Windows Update website to check the issue again. If the issue still persists, we can try the following suggestion.



Suggestion 3: Rename the Hosts file
===========================
The Hosts file is used for host name resolution. If this file has been modified, we cannot access the Windows Update website properly and will receive an error code.



1. Click Start, Run, type "%SystemRoot%\system32\drivers\etc" (without quotations) and then press Enter.
2. Right-click on the file "Hosts" (without quotations) and choose Rename
3. Rename the file to "hostsold" (without quotations)



4. Then, clear the DNS (Domain Name Resolution) cache:



a) Click Start, Run, type "cmd" (without quotations) and press Enter.
b ) In the opened window, type: "ipconfig /flushdns" (without quotations) and press Enter.



Note: The hosts file will be generated automatically after being removed.



Please try the steps above and let me know the results. If the issue persists, to provide more effective support, please assist me in collecting the following information.



How to collect System Information:
===========================
The System Information can provide us with more information about the current status of the system. Please send it to me using the following steps:



1. Click "Start", go to "Run", type in "MSINFO32" (without quotation marks) and press Enter to start System Information.
2. On the popup window, on the menu bar, click "File", and click "Save"; save it as an NFO file, such as "system.nfo" to your local Desktop.
3. Find the file, right-click on this file, click "Send To", and click "Compressed (zipped) Folder".
4. Please send it as an attachment to v-30LUL@mssupport.microsoft.com.



How to collect the Windows Update log file:
================================
Note: There are two Windows Update log files with similar names, we will be using the "WindowsUpdate.log" file without a space in the middle of the name.



1. Click on Start, Run and type "WindowsUpdate.log" (without quotation marks)
2. Click on the OK button. We will see a file named "WindowsUpdate.log"
3. Now click on the "File" menu and then click on the "Save As" and select "Desktop" in the "Save in" option on the top of the window.
4. Click on the Save button. The file will be saved to your Desktop. Please send the file as an attachment in an email to v-30LUL@mssupport.microsoft.com



However, if the file is unable to be collected by the above steps, we can also use the following method to collect it.



1. Click "Start", "Run", type: %windir% and then press Enter.
2. In the open window, we will see a file named "WindowsUpdate.log"
3. Please send it as an attachment to: v-30LUL@mssupport.microsoft.com



Note: When attaching files to emails, the process will vary depending on the email application being used. While you are composing the email, most applications will provide you with either an "Attach" button or Paper Clip Icon to click in order to attach a file. After clicking this button/icon you must browse to the file you wish to attach and select it by either double clicking it or clicking it once and then clicking on the "Attach" button.



Please also let me know if this is a home computer or a work computer. If it is a home computer, does it connect to the Internet directly or through a network device? If it is a work computer, is the computer is in a domain?
