I have a problem with my ccProxy.exe. It has never given me problems before and then today for no reason its Mem Usage started rising for no reason. Its usually at around 1000 or less but now it just keeps rising. At one point it pushed my commit charge to near the limit because it was using up 250,000 Mem. It starts slowing down my pc and i restart it but the problem keeps coming back. It rises steadly at a rate from 100 - 500. I closed most of my programs it still rises. Is this an ordinary problem or is something serious at work?
Hi Lezir, You appear to recognize that ccproxy.exe is part of Norton and related to facilitating various components of a network if/when it exists. While there are other ways to make a network function, for better or worse, Norton Security Suite is now in the business too. Possibilities: – Your installation of Norton has become corrupted – uninstall/re-install Norton – You have accumulated various legitimate "application updaters" that consume large amounts of system resorces and Norton is telling you about it via high usage. – Turn off various low priority updaters, like Real updater, Google toolbar alert updater, nVidia updaters, QuickTime updater, Adobe updater, etc. – You have accumulated some ad-ware spyware, or even some trojan activity. – run your AVG AntiSpyware or Spybot Search & Destroy, then run one online scanner like Panda or TrendMicro Housecall. If none of the above help, then please run and post a HJT into the Malware Removal Forum (Don't post a HJT Log here in this Forum as we do not analyze HJT.) We will however, be looking in on the thread and will be interested to observe the recommendations of your Malware Removal Forum expert responder, as that may also assist any further necessary work here. Best Regards
Greetings Lezir

Do you ever get the feeling if it isnt one thing its another when it comes to these computers?

Did a little research and found your ccProxy.exe is part of the Norton Internet security suite.

Found this little snip:

"Part of Norton Internet Security, proxy server that is used to support the parental controls. If you turn parental controls off at user level the process is not loaded. Reported to cause excessive CPU usage"

end of snip.

Not being really intimate with the inner workings of Nortons menu system I would bet if you dont need the parental controls and you can find where to turn it off it would improve your excessive cpu/memory issues.

I am in training here and would refer you to more expert assistance if this does not help, but I do not belive this turning off of parental controls will break your computer or damage your os/data in anyway.

There is always Norton tech support if it continues to be a problem. Worse case scenario I would think would be a reload of the suite, perhaps something got scrambled in the software.

Regards.
And to you to, Kazzoo. Your "find" regarding ccProxy.exe and the possible involvement of Parental Controls issues, may be obscure, but I sure didn't know about it, and would have been banging my head on all other kinds of possibilities. We'll only know if it applies in this situation if Lezir is so kind as to inform us. Thanks for bringing the possibility to our collective attention. Best Regards
Thanks for all your info. I think the possibilty Doug put in about the updaters may be the problem because I have a number of auto updaters. The ccProxy.exe mem usage dropped signifigantly after my computer went into hibernation. (I went to see the movie Transformers)
Is there a way to uninstall the Norton Antivirus? Mine is pretty useless except for its firewall my subscription ran out long ago around like last year. Do you have any free firewall programs you can recommend to me? I dont want to have to end up hibernating my computer everytime the ccProxy.exe mem usage starts to rise uncontrolled. I already have an alternate AntiVirus program that is free, its the AVG 7.5 and i have Ad-Aware for spyware.
Hi Lezir,

Norton/Symantec can "generally" be uninstalled via Control Panel - Add/Remove.

It is also the case that Norton/Symantec has "known problems" that many prior users encounter during the uninstall process.

To begin with, there are several "entries" in Add/Remove that are Norton/Symantec applications and processes. Many users uninstall the first one they see, and then mistakenly believe that they have successfully removed Norton/Symantec. Not so.

The items to be uninstalled my have any of the following, in their entry:

"Symantec"
"Norton"
"Live Update"

You will need to uninstall "all" of them, or your machine may continue to be subject to lag, drag, excessive and needless consumption of CPU/RAM system resources.

Acknowledging that they have a problem, Norton/Symantec have created various Removal Tools (that may be specific to your exact product version installed on your machine.)

Have a look, read, and inform yourself about what you specifically need, here:

Best Regards
Doug
