I run Windows XP Pro and have 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2 My main problem is that my computer will not shut off. When I go to start- turn off, and it starts shutting down and then freezes at the 'Windows is shutting down' screen. There are two alternating messages that say- Do not turn off or unplug your computer, it will turn off automatically. And the other message is "updates are being installed (1 of 1)… but nothing happens, and it doesn't shut down. I tried to do a system restore but when it goes to reboot, it freezes at the 'shut down' screen. I also have run into the Windows Genuine Authentication problem. I use this computer for my kids and have not had any problems with the WGA on my computer but I get the invalid copy warning on their computer. I am not sure if I am getting updates anymore or not for this computer. Can I disable this warning from popping up each time the computer is turned on and still get updates. I have also tried to download and install Hijackthis. I get the HJTsetup window on my desktop, when I right click and select Open, it offers the "Do you want to open this file' box and when I click Open, I get the "Choose the file you want to open this file" window. Nothing in there looks like a program I would use to install it. I clicked the properties box and checked the file version and it is 0.0.0.0. Did it not download properly? I have run Spybot, Ad-Aware and Zonealarm and everthing looks good. Thanks for any help you can offer!
Hello bballplayer,

I also have run into the Windows Genuine Authentication problem. I use this computer for my kids and have not had any problems with the WGA on my computer but I get the invalid copy warning on their computer.

If by this you mean that you have used the same XP installation CD that you purchased and own, to install XP upon your own computer and also upon your children's computer, then you will run into problems with WGA on the second machine.

Any one XP installation Product Identification Code is good to activate only one instance of the XP operating System on one machine.
If you wish to install XP onto a second machine, you would have to purchase another License that would deliver a second Product Identification Code for Activation.

If the above is your situation, then please contact Microsoft or roll back to the legitimate operating system that you may have previously had on your children's machine.

If the above is not your situation, then please pardon my misunderstanding and contimue on with the below possible path for resolution.

Windows Installer 3.0 and earlier versions are known to create difficulty with "leaving debris" during and after installation of components of Windows Operating System and MS Office Applicaiton.

Because of this know issue, MS has created what they call the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility.
read about it here and download/run it if what you learn leads you to believe that it relates to your current situation.

The computer was my brothers, and I am presuming the OS was preinstalled at the store. He doesn't have a disc. It is disappointing to find out that each computer has to have a seperate disc, especially when most homes have more than one computer nowadays. Thanks for the input
Is there a D:\ drive partition of the Hard Drive? If there is, then it probably contains the "Restore Disk" information. It is common in the case of "pre-installed, for the manufacturer/shop to place sufficient XP and Driver installation information into a D:\ drive partition. The owner/user is then urged to "Create backup Restore CD set" in case they ever need to restore the machine to factory original. Hunt around a bit to see if there is a method to create such Restore CD Set. It can only be used once. Since your Bro says he doesn't have disks, he probably didn't use the "one" chance to create the disks, and therefore it may still be available to you.
I will do some investigating on creating a backup cd. Any advice on the download for hijackthis and the computer freezing at shut down? Thanks!
Hi bballplayer,

Sounds like you are downloading a "compressed" "zipped" download of HiJackThis, that requires a utility like WinZip to "unpack".

Let's start over.

Create a new Folder on your C: drive as follows…

C:\New Folder

Now "rename" the New Folder as follows….

C:\HJT\

Next:

Go Here to download the file HiJackThis.exe and download it to be saved in your newly created folder.
http://www.radiosplace.com/

After the download is complete the file will be in your newly created folder as follows…

C:\HJT\HiJackThis.exe

Now you have a completely functional version of HiJackThis correctly saved into its own Folder.

As to the "failure" at shut-down.
Lotsa things can cause that, including:
one or more programs being open in your own account or another user account.
Updates for a security utility needing to be downloaded/installed.
MS Updates being automatically downloaded/installed.

You might be able to determine what application or processes are involved by using your TaskManager
Does it look I need to change anything?

Thank you so much for your help!

Hi bballplayer,

That would be a "whoops!"
We do not analyze HJT Logs here in OCP Forums.

If at some time in the future, you decide that you actually do need assistance with Malware Removal and wish to post a HJT Log for Expert Assistance, please post in the following Forum:
http://forums.tomcoyote.org/HijackThis_Log…emoval_f27.html

With that said, my "unqualified" opinion, is that you have nothing showing in your HJT that would raise concern about Malware.
You might experience it as a waste of your time and theirs to post now into Malware Removal Forum. But if you want Expert Assistance to verify that the HJT Log is all clear or not, you should Post into the Malware Removal Forum.

**note: It's never a bad idea to check with the Qualified Experts for verification about Malware questions.
________

You do, however, have a bunch of entirely unnecessary applications and processes running active from your Startup menu, which could be dragging on your system resources, and which are very likely to be involved in the difficulties that you are having at Shut Down time.
________

There is a different Test and various Utilities that can help you sort out what really needs to be running and what can be safely "disabled" from your StartUp menu.

Please do the following:
GoTo: http://www.pcpitstop.com
Run the - Full Tests
Post your TechExpress Link (from the Full Tests Results page) back here into this thread at TC for further help in analyzing the Results and deciding on any steps to take including various Tune-Up Tips.

You will be required to register for the Full Tests with a valid email address.
You will be required to accept an ActiveX component to allow your machine to run the tests.
Both are FREE and both are SAFE.

We'll watch here at OCP Forum TC for your posting, if you decide to take advantage of the Full Tests and want assistance with next steps to take.

Best Regards
Doug
OMG! I'm so sorry for posting that here. :wall: I am familiar with pcpitstop and I will run the tests on the kids' computer and post back here. Thanks for the info
I am also having several problems with my Win XP pro service pack 2. First of all, the PC is very slow in start up, all working, and at shut down. I don't know why. I have tried several ways, including increasing the virtual memory. Still, my PC is slow. I think it is a problem with XP.
