I apologize I am not too familiar with this computer, but Bill and family say it's slow so I siad I'd see if I (I meaning you) can help. Bill is not too computer savey, so I got volunteered. This computer is old; I'm not sure how old, and very slow. I've installed add watch and symantec AV. There is usualy something on here when I scan, but I just took care of that. What can I do to maximize the performance while keeping his computers screensavers and such intact?
I lied I assumed his protecion was as good as mine, but pcpitstop picked up some spyware that add aware doesn't seem to want to pick up what should do I need to do to catch what what falls through the cracks?

For the most part I would follow the following site where Doug has helped you with much the same problem as with your own system.

http://forums.tomcoyote.org/Computer_Use_Fast_t80807.html

Tell us the specs of "Bill's" computer so we know what we are working with. How old is it? what OS is it running, what Antivirus and Antispyware programs are installed? Are the Windows updates current?

If a PCPitstop full scan will not work, post a hijackthis log to the following site, but be patient as the volunteers are very busy.

http://forums.tomcoyote.org/HijackThis_Log…emoval_f27.html

You will need to download hijackthis.exe from the following site, and please take care to make sure you read about how and where to post your log. (take particular notice of Doug's post #15) on your previous thread.

Hope this helps you and do get back to us if you want more information.

kind regards,
Thanks Tallin, I have done several of the things that Doug had suggested I do with my own pc. I'll look over it again to see what I've missed. The specs OS Win XP v. 2002 Service Pack 2 Intel Celeron 1300MHz 256MB RAM 33.3 GB Hard Drive 6.83 GB used Bill Says he bout this PC in 2001 Currently running Nortons AV and Add Watch/Add Aware I will go ahead with a highjack this log. I won't be able to work on this computer often so I hope you guys will have enough patients for me. Thanks! Let me know if any of this info is lacking.

Glad to see you posted your Hijackthis log.

Bill's computer is about the same age as mine although you are lacking in RAM in my opinion, but I am only a novice when it comes to dealing with much more than simple advice here.

You did not mention whether your Windows Updates are current. A very important item for your attention.

I will watch what the Experts say regarding your hijackthis log. Feel free to come back to OCP if you need other help after you get your report/s.

Could I suggest you do a House Call scan from here while you wait for your hijackthis log report which I know you now realise could take awhile.

kind regards,
I'm not sure how to check if his win is current but I think auto update was on I stop by there again tomorrow and see. PCPitstop agreed with you that the RAM was lacking. I doubt he'll go for more RAM. Thanks for the help. Should I keep this thread alive post hijack logs or start a new one if I have furthur problems?

Hi Amebeo,

Click START/ and scroll up to either Windows Update, or Microsoft update, either one should show above All Programs'. If you are not the Administrator you will not be able to access this so perhaps 'Bill' needs to be home! Follow the prompts once you have accessed the updates. The following site will show you the latest, but once you access the update site it will be done for you.

http://www.microsoft.com/protect/computer/…mp;mg_id=20565b

I do not set my options to Automatically Update as I do not run IE 7.0, I have my update set to Custom so I can choose what I want to download and install. START/settings/control panel/Scroll up to Automatic Updates to set what ever you want.

RAM is very inexpensive at this time and it is the best bang for your buck. But please be careful to check what type of RAM you have (you need exactly the same type etc) and if there is a spare slot to take more. If you are not confident to install yourself it is better in the long run to get a professional to help. I do and would not think of touching that area of my computer. You will be amazed at the difference in your system performance if further RAM is able to be installed.

You stay with this thread in OCP (here) and your Hijackthis log is already posted so you will be notiified via email just as you are from here when an expert answers your request on your Hijackthis thread. Stay patient with the Hijackthis Malware Removal Forum as mentioned earlier on this thread……….they are wonderful folk and all volunteers so have other jobs to go to.

kind regards, -_-
