Hi, Thank you for giving me the opportunity to solve my computer issues before I throw it at the wall. My knowledge of computers is limited to the programs I use daily. Beyond that I'm quite lost, so I apologize if my issues are already discussed or clearly visible, as I don't have the tools to recognize them. Any help would be greatly appreciated. My problems started when my subscription to McAfee expired and had to renew. They asked me to download a new version and my computer has never been the same. I spent 3 hours on the phone with them trying to get the problem resolved and while it's a bit better, my computer has serious issues. I find it ironic that a program that's meant to keep your computer running smoothly messed my computer up. Waste of money. Anyway, the problems is my computer has become excruciatingly slow. Files that should come up instantaneously take forever to come up, and to scroll and to save or close. Any function pretty much takes extraordinary time. It also freezes up from time to time. Finally, when using a search engine, primarily Google, it often takes me to an unrelated page. If I return to google and use it again, it will take me to the correct page, but he first time, it takes me to some unsolicited page. It may not be related to the slow operation of the computer, but it too started after downloading the new version of McAfee and I feel it's somehigh tied into it. Again, any help will be great appreciated. Thank you in advance.

DO NOT use any TOOLS such as Combofix, SmitfraudFix, MBAM, Vundofix, or HijackThis fixes without supervision.

Doing so could make your pc inoperatible and could require a full reinstall of your OS, losing all your programs and data.

Stay with this topic until I give you the all clean post.

You might want to print these instructions out.

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Uncheck "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Uncheck "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Next:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected .
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot.
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

Please don't attach the scans / logs, use "copy/paste".
Firstly, I would like to thank you for working with me on this and helping me work through this problem. I really genuinely appreciate it. Now, this is actually the 2nd reply I sent. The first one was intercepted and I was taken to a page that said I had the outdated version of Hijack This and to download the new version. Unfortunately, everytime I tried to do this, it would save it as an unknown file type. And when I saved it to my desktop it wouldn't recognize it or know how to open it. So unfortunately, the only Hijack log I have the one I took with my older version and they won't that message won't go through, so I will post here only the log I received from Malwarebytes application. If you know how I can get the new version of HijackThis, please let me know. Thanks. Now, regarding the computer's behavior after I completed everything you instructed, unfortunately, it's still painfully slow and drags pretty much every pages I log on to. But I did try the Google search problem I was having, where I would click on the link and it would go to an unrelated page. I tried several times and it seems to have been fixed. Each time I tried, it did indeed to to the correct page. Obviously, it's only been one day, so I can't be 100% certain, but for the time being, it does appear to be fixed. Thank you for that. And please let me know what I need to do next. Thank you again. So here is the log I got from Malwarebytes instructions you provided: Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.34 Database version: 1882 Windows 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2 3/21/2009 4:43:45 PM mbam-log-2009-03-21 (16-43-45).txt Scan type: Quick Scan Objects scanned: 94218 Time elapsed: 16 minute(s), 33 second(s) Memory Processes Infected: 0 Memory Modules Infected: 0 Registry Keys Infected: 1 Registry Values Infected: 3 Registry Data Items Infected: 8 Folders Infected: 3 Files Infected: 3 Memory Processes Infected: (No malicious items detected) Memory Modules Infected: (No malicious items detected) Registry Keys Infected: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\__c00f1e99 (Trojan.Vundo) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully. Hi again,

I downloaded HijackThis from another site and it seemed to work. So I got the log for it as well. I hope this helps. Please let me know what else I can do. Thank you again.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Note: If you are having difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, or are unsure as to what programs need to be disabled, please refer to the information available through this link : Protective Programs

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

Note: Combofix will run without the Recovery Console installed.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
"copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread as well.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Give it atleast 20-30 minutes to finish if needed.

Please don't attach the scans / logs, use "copy/paste".

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Hi,

Thank you again for your excellent direction. I was away for a few days, so I was only able to do as you instructed today, One thing to note before I post the logs you requested. I had the most difficult time disabling my McAfee. The instuctions provided by the link you provided didn't work. It stated to right click on the McAfee icon and press exit, but that, for some reason, wasn't an option. I tried to do it manually and thought I had, so I proceeded with ComboFix, but it turns out it didn't take and Viruscan was still active. I don't know how that effected the cleanup and I'm not sure if I should do it again. But it did seem to complete the process and give me a log, so I will provided that first, along with the HijackThis log. It's really too early to tell how it effects my computer, but so far I've not noticed a change. Anyway, please let me know what you think or what the next step would be. Thank you again as always. I'm endlessly grateful.

Good job

The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

    • [external image: Posted Image]

To be on the safe side, I would also change all my passwords.

Here's my usual all clean post

    Log looks good :D

    • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
      • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
      • Click once on the Security tab
      • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
      • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week
(Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.
Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.
I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.
Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly.
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site
until there are no more critical updates.

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.
Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
by Tony Klein
Thank you again for your continued and patient help. I'm learning quite a bit in the process. Unfortunately, I don't think my problems are finished. I'll walk you through this. I followed your most recent directions and ran Combofix /u. It uninstalled Combofix, which I assume was intentional. After that, I started on your suggestion, beginning at the top: Make your Internet Explorer more secure. All the things that you suggested doing were already set to those settings, except for the last one, Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt. I switched it to prompt and pressed OK and it froze. After several minutes, I pressed Ctrl + Alt + delete and it turns out the problem was with the browser (Internet Explorer). I closed it out and tried it again. This time all the settings were set correctly, including the last one. But when I pressed OK again, it once again froze. I closed everything up, and restarted the computer. I tried it again and once again, pressing the OK button in the Internet Options froze the box. I didn't continue with the suggestion list, because am assuming that shouldn't happen and there is still something wrong. Furthermore, and it pains me to say this, my computer is still as slow as slug. If there has been inprovement in the speed, it's been miniscule. Any other suggestions? Please let me know. One last thing. When I first reported my issues, one of the first instructions that I received were as follows: I suggest you do this: Double-click My Computer. Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options. Click the View tab. Uncheck "Hide file extensions for known file types." Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders." Uncheck "Hide protected operating system files." Click Apply, and then click OK. I never reversed these settings, because I was never instructed to. But should I reverse these settings, or is it better I leave them in this position. Please let me know. And once again, I can't tell you how grateful I am for your help. I look forward to you reply. Thank you again.

I never reversed these settings, because I was never instructed to. But should I reverse these settings, or is it better I leave them in this position. Please let me know.

The un-install of Combofix should have done that, if not:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

For the slow issues I suggest you start a new topic in our windows forum.
Be sure to let them know we removed infections and add a link to your topic here.
Hi, Thank you as always for your help. You were correct. It did, in fact, reverse those settings and everything was in proper place. I will take your advice and start a new thread to try to fix the speed of my computer. Thank you again for all your help.
Since this issue appears to be resolved … this Topic has been closed. Glad we could be of assistance. If you're the topic starter, and need this topic reopened, please contact a staff member with the address of the thread. Everyone else please begin a New Topic.
