Would like to see if there is some help on how to move some of the programs, etc. from the small "c" drive to the larger "d". Getting low disc space message. Any help would be appreciated.
Hi ,
To answer your question directly the best way to move programmes from C to D is to install them on D and uninstall from c
However are you sure you want to do this?
There are very good reasons for having your windows operating system and programmes on c with your data on d and if you like an extra partition e for a disc image.

There are lots of ways of releasing space on c without doing any of the above:
here's just a few as a memory jogger…obviously if you have done these already then perhaps you should consider other solutions including fitting a new hard drive for your c with a larger capacity?

to free up some space consider:
1 From control panel click on add/remove Programs and study the whole list carefully, is there anything there that you definitely don't use and can do without, see when you last used the application and if its redundant then consider uninstalling it.
2 Having done this look at all the others and see if any can also go.
3 Do you empty your temp files caches etc regularly, you can download ATF-Cleaner by atribune from here:
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/19/2/
that will do the job for winxp/2K systems. (log on under each account on the machine)
4 Have you deleted all unecessary emails and emptied your deleted files folder Some folks have stuff going back years. To free up disc space after doing this it will be necessary to "compact all folders" You can back it all up first to removable media if you like)
5 Your "My Documents" folder may be full of stuff that can be archived to external hard drive. or DVD or CD so freeing up lots of space, this is particularly important if you have some music files or pictures/photos or videos that really take up a lot of room.
6 you can use disc compression to reduce the size of some of your existing stuff.
7 for best performance its best to defrag regularly and clean up at least monthly.
8 Some folks tend to leave the system restore utility using the default 12% of hard drive capacity (C: ) if you have a 80GB drive this is getting on for 10GB and you may find that half of this is enough for your purposes.

I did this exercise for a customer last week and her 40GB hard drive ( that was getting choked) was relieved of just under 20GB the effect on performance after a tune up and defrag was amazing.
Hope this helps
