Hi there

Let me start by thanking the people who help dudes like me out - it's a wonderful thing to help someone who cannot help themselves and you have my respect.

A couple of things are bugging me and I can't shift them despite having some experience in this field, a bunch of google searches etc so I turn to you, dear fellows, for help:

1) "Virtumonde" - Ad-Aware/SpyBot have managed to clean-up everything but this, despite having SpyBot run automatically on reboot. It appears to start itself very early-on in the Windows launch process…

2) Maybe related to the above item, I get regular pop-ups in IE taking me to all kinds of Web sites, and AdultFriendFinders frames get added to my active browse windows, making my boss very, very unhappy indeed!

I'd be grateful if you'd peruse this log and let me know any instructions, apps or URLs which can help me out.

Many thanks

Sanebutoverwhelmed

Hi and welcome to the forums. :) I'm Markka and I will be helping you with your malware issues. I'll check your HijackThis log. Right now I'm MRU Undergrad, everything that I post to you must be checked by teachers of Malware Removal University. Please be patient. :)
Hello :)

Rename HijackThis.exe to Scanner.exe by doing the following;
  • Navigate to here; C:\Program Files\Hijackthis
  • Right-click on the HijackThis.exe
  • Choose from the pull-down menu; "Rename"
  • And now Rename HijackThis.exe to Scanner.exe
  • When you're renamed HijackThis, then open it..
  • Take a fresh HijackThis log (Do a system scan and save a log file)
  • Post the fresh HijackThis log to here.
Ok… renamed to C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\Scanner.exe - here follows the resultant log. I'm curious as to why I've just renamed this file… can you elaborate? Thanks!

Hello :)

I'm curious as to why I've just renamed this file… can you elaborate?

When you sent your first HijackThis log, then there weren't O2 and O20 lines. And when HijackThis doesn't show O2 and O20 lines, then there can be vundo infection. After the renaming it showed O2 & O20 lines :D

Next steps are:

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot.
_______________________________________________________
1. Download this file - combofix.exe
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

That's a lot of data! I hope it's all of interest to you =o]

I think the following may be of interest too… it may be unrelated, but I thought you should know that AVG picked up some Trojan Horses today:

Collected.11.B
Generic5.CF
Generic5.GQ
Generic4.SLZ

I've moved them all to the Virus Vault so hopefully that should help.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Sanebutoverwhelmed :D
Hi You'll be pleased to know that, since following your instructions, the annoying pop-ups I was getting have all but disappeared. Congratulations! Another successful malware removal I think! Everything seems to be running smoothly and I'll come back and post a new log in a new thread if anything else "pops up" ^_^ For now, you can consider this thread closed. Thanks again to you and your virtual team for all your help. With very best wishes Sanebutoverwhelmed

- A fresh HijackThis log
- AVG Anti-Spyware's report
- Results of VirusTotal
Hi!

Followed your wonderful instructions to the letter and got some very positive results, but a few hitches which I mention below. If any of this doesn't make sense, forgive me - it's the end of the working day and I'm frazzled  Just ask and I'll try to explain myself better!

The Save Report button on AVG AS was inactive both before Applying all actions and afterward. I used the software as described above… it found Virtumonde and Downloader.Tiny.id.

So as the Save Report button was inactive, it means there's no report. I can tell you it quarantined all the items, including c:\windows\system32\xqwvhqso.exe which was infected with Downloader.Tiny.id, and therefore is not found in File 1: below. I hope that makes sense!! If you need me to, I can type out the file/Registry locations of the infections it found… just let me know.

(FYI had a couple of issues with this app, so you may want to add something to your instructions. Firstly, starting Windows in Safe Mode defaults the display to 640 x 480 pixels, and AVG AS's default window size appears to be much bigger than that. So I had to Alt-Space, (M)ove and use the arrow keys to move the window down and find the Maximise/Restore button between Minimise and Close, then click on it, which maximised the window to my screen size, allowing me to use the app properly. I only did this once I realised I couldn't actually SEE the buttons you mentioned… now I'm quite an experienced user of Windows who knows what Alt-Space does and how to manipulate Windows using the keyboard… but a non-tech type or newbie might get totally stuck in an instance like this! …I hope that's of some use to you =o)

OK… with the VirusTotal uploads and checks… Two files were not found - one because AVG quarantined it as mentioned above and the other because it was referencing a drive that doesn't exist on my computer. If this was the intended outcome, can I suggest that you indicate that in your instructions? I felt like I'd perhaps done something wrong! If that wasn't the intended outcome and I have done something wrong, let me know and I'll try again!

The log for the one file that was found by VirusTotal, lsdelete.exe, is below:

File 1: xqwvhqso.exe not found

File 2: lsdelete.exe - log below - no virus found - always a good sign!

Hello :)

First we'll need to backup registry:

Start -> Run -> regedit -> ok. Then File -> Export. Give it a name and press Save.

Save text below as fix.reg on Notepad (save it as all files (*.*)) on Desktop

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2]

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2]

It should look like this -> [external image: Posted Image]

Doubleclick fix.reg, press Yes and ok.

(In case you are unsure how to create a reg file, take a look here with screenshots.)

Hi

I followed your instructions… the Kaspersky scan log follows…

Please note I'm away until Monday as from about half an hour from now, so any further instructions or information I'll check when I return to work ;)

Also, I'd be tempted to ignore the Z:\ files that are listed below as I've never accessed them from this computer, although I will include them in my next AVG virus scan and attempt to fix them or quarantine them.
