Recently my 14-year-old visited a bunch of porn sites, which evidently contained some very effective browser-hijacking bugs. Now, when I'm using my browser (Slim Browser v. 3.82 on top of IE v. 6), every couple of minutes I've got strange XXX-rated windows appearing. I've been reading up on spyware, parasites, etc. and what follows is my first HijackThis scan. I'm real naive concerning what does and what doesn't belong on this list, so I'd appreciate the heck out of whatever valid advice I can get….
Thanks for your time and attention to detail ;-}

First, would you please send a copy of the C:\WINDOWS\delmsbb.exe file to this e-mail address for analysis?
It would seem to be an all new baddie, and we'd like to have a closer look at it!

Much appreciated! :)

Now in Hijack This, check ALL of the following items. Doublecheck so as to be sure not to miss a single one.
Next, close all browser Windows, and have HT fix all checked.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://allneedsearch.com/spm.htm
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://allneedsearch.com/
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://allneedsearch.com/spm.htm
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://allneedsearch.com/

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {C1E58A84-95B3-4630-B8C2-D06B77B7A0FC} - C:\Program Files\NavExcel\NavHelper\v2.0.4\NHelper.dll

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {7891DA15-428E-11D7-BCC1-00A024831A8C} - (no file)

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [delmsbb] C:\WINDOWS\delmsbb.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [LDM] C:\Program Files\Logitech\Desktop Messenger\8876480\Program\BackWeb-8876480.exe

O4 - Global Startup: Logitech Desktop Messenger.lnk = C:\Program Files\Logitech\Desktop Messenger\8876480\Program\LDMConf.exe
O4 - Global Startup: winlogon.exe

Now Start your computer in Safe Mode, and delete the C:\WINDOWS\delmsbb.exe file.

If Winlogon.exe refuses to be removed, you'll have to go to your All Users\Startup folder and remove the file manually.

Also remove the NavExcel folder in Program Files.

Cheers,
Tony K:
I made a copy of the file, as you requested, but when I tried to use the " this e-mail address" link, nothing came up, so I can't figure out how to send it to you. [In .zip form it's 170kb.]
Any ideas?

Terry

Tony K:
I made a copy of the file, as you requested, but when I tried to use the " this e-mail address" link, nothing came up,….

That means you have a problem with file associations which we'll need to attend to….

Meanwhile, I'll send you a Private Message with my email addy!
TO TONY K. et al:
Yesterday @ 7:49p.m. posted my first log under "Unwanted Porn Site Popups", then read Tony's msges & followed all suggestions. I even went into Regedit and manually checked/removed the offending values. For the rest of last night things seemed to run fine…
This morning first thing, turn on the box and the offending sites are:
1.) Re-inserted into my browser home page again,
2.) Back into my Favorites folder, after being deleted 3 times previously
3.) And the specific values (from a URL ending w/ "allneedsearch.com" that were deleted from the Registry yesterday ARE BACK IN THE REGISTRY.

Do you think this could be the result of an evil dialer?

For your reference, here's the HJT log from ten minutes ago, complete with those "allneedsearch" entries that were removed yesterday. Thanks in advance for any suggestions you can share

Could you start your computer in Safe Mode. Then, when carrying out the instructions below, make sure that you have no other browsers or windows open as this could compromise the action. Open HJT, scan and when complete, remove the following entries by checking the box to the left and clicking 'fixed checked':

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://allneedsearch.com/spm.htm
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://allneedsearch.com/
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://allneedsearch.com/spm.htm
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://allneedsearch.com/
O4 - Global Startup: winlogon.exe

Then reboot in Normal Mode and see if that nailed it. Let us know.
Yo, Daemon !

Thanks much for the advice. I followed your suggestions, shut off all windows, went into safe, and deleted those entries w/ HJT…Everything seems fine right now, but I know from (limited) experience that the vermin-entries can appear to be deleted, then mysteriously re-emerge from whence foul hole they came…I'm going to shut the box down, give it a few hours, and then try again.

BTW–Yesterday when I went thru this, I scanned w/ HJT and deleted the "allneedsearch.com" entries, but did not remove the "Global Logon" entry you named. I hope to sam hill that does it!

Thanks for your time & attention to detail. I'll definitely drop a line later and let you know how it went. :wavey:

Terry.
For Tony K, Daemon, & the Crew:

Just a quick note to say that, it's been 5 hrs or so since executing Daemon's advice, trying to fix my browser-hijacking problem, and so far everything is working perfect.

If I run across anyone else rolling their eyes and tearing their hair out because of spyware problems, you guys have got my vote.

Thanks again for your time and attention to detail.

Terry :wavey:
Glad we could help. :)
