Hello,

My computer has been having a problem where for no reason the processor.. or cpu usage maxes out. It does this no matter what is running, causing music and sounds to skip repeatedly. I have tryed pay spyware removal and virus removal… and also the free removals softwares have only been slightly more successful at finding problem but not fixing the main one. here is the Hijack log..

Hi mckaze

I can't yet say whether the problems you are experiencing are caused by malware, if they are we will get to the bottom of it, if not then I'll advise you on getting further help.

First, can you please tell me which antivirus program(s) you have installed and running?

Temporarily disable Spy Sweeper
  • Open Spysweeper and click on Options->Program Options and uncheck Load at Windows Startup
  • On the left side click Shields and then uncheck everything there
  • Uncheck Home Page Shield
  • Uncheck Automatically restore default without notification
  • Exit the program
Extract HijackThis from it's zip archive and move it to a permanent location:
  • Open My Computer, navigate to C:\ and make a new folder named HJT
  • Open the HijackThis.zip archive folder, select File and choose Extract All…
  • Press Next, then Browse to C:\HJT, press Next and then Finish
  • You should now have an explorer window open at C:\HJT, if you wish to place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop, then right-click hijackthis.exe, select Send To and choose Desktop (create shortcut)
Then, open HijackThis, choose Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following line:
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {860c2f6b-ca82-4282-9187-beccbb66f0af} - (no file)

Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt and close HijackThis.

Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.
http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.exe

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter
This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. When it is done, the results of the scan will be displayed and it will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other options until you are asked to do so!

If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C: ), and launch from there.

Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user. Further info is available here.

Next, please do an online scan with Kaspersky:

Open Kaspersky Online Scanner in Internet Explorer

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky,
Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT and then Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • The program will start to scan your system.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on the Save as Text button and save the file to your desktop
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

Re-enable Spy Sweeper
  • Open Spysweeper and click on Options > Program Options and check Load at Windows Startup
  • On the left click Shields and then check everything there
  • Check Home Page Shield
  • Check Automatically restore default without notification
  • Exit the program
Once complete, please post the Smitfraudfix log, the Kaspersky log and a new HijackThis log. Also, let me know about your antivirus program.
Thank you for your reply,

The kaspersky found something on the computer. The current antivirus software is norton, and I have also used Adaware se to get rid of a virus. here are the postings.

Thank you for your help.
John Williams
Hi John,

The only files Kaspersky found were part of Smitfraudfix so nothing to worry about there.

Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Once you have rebooted, please download F-Secure Blacklight
  • Click I ACCEPT and download the graphical user interface version to your Desktop
  • Double click the file to run it, choose I accept the agreement then press Scan
  • It will create the fsbl-xxxxxxx.log on your desktop.
  • The log will have a list of all items found.
  • Do not choose to rename any yet! I want to see the log first because legitimate items can also be present.
  • Exit Blacklight and post the contents of the log in your next reply.
Next download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS)
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  • Make sure Format->Word Wrap is unchecked
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your reply
Once complete, please post the new Smitfraudfix log, the Blacklight log and both DSS logs, you won't need to produce a new HijackThis log as DSS produces one for you.
Hellos again,

Here is the DSS post and smitfraud. The blacklight didn't save a log because it didn't find anything. Thanks again for all of your help.

Hi mckaze,

The DSS report shows your Antivirus engine or signatures are out of date:

AV: Norton Internet Security v2007 (Symantec Corporation) Outdated

If this is correct, please update this immediately as your antivirus program is only as good as it's signatures. You may wish to check that your subscription is current. If it isn't, either renew it or remove the Symantec product and install a free antivirus - there are several packages available, two of the most popular are here:
AVG Antivirus: http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1
Antivir: http://www.free-av.com/

You can now delete smitfraudfix.exe, fsbl.exe and dss.exe from your Desktop, and you can also delete the C:\SmitfraudFix folder

A few uninstalls to consider:

Your Java is outdated and is now a security risk
Go to Start » Control Panel » Add/Remove Programs
Find and remove J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
Download and install the newest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE), from here:
http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp

You have LimeWire, a P2P file sharing program installed on your computer. This program does not come bundled with malware as some similar programs do, but P2P file sharing networks are one of the biggest sources of malware we see. Anything downloaded from them cannot be trusted to be clean, because even if the file appears to be what it claims to be, it can have malware embedded in it.
I recommend you remove it, but of course the choice is yours.
You can remove Limewire via Add/Remove Programs.

We've had a pretty thorough look at your computer and at this stage it looks clean of malware, so if the symptoms are still occurring, I'd say the slowdown has other causes.
Some suggestions for pinning it down:
  • Uninstall unnecessary applications via Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs
  • Turn off unnecessary auto-starting applications. Look at your HijackThis log for programs which automatically start - many are listed in the O4 section of the log, and turn of the automatic starting functionality from within the program. Note: Please do not use HijackThis to remove the entries.
  • Use Process Explorer to monitor resources on your system. Run Process Explorer minimized and when a slowdown occurs, switch to the Process Explorer window to see which process is using a high percentage of CPU.
  • Post in the Other computer problems forum here at Tom Coyote to get more help.
Some tips to help you keep your computer clean:

Operating system vulnerabilities can easily be exploited by malware so please ensure your operating system is automatically kept up to date by using Windows Update:
Go to Start->Control Panel->Automatic Updates
Select Automatic and select a suitable schedule
Also, check that your antivirus and antispyware programs are set to automatically update daily.

You should consider installing a Personal Firewall program. Even if you are behind a NAT router, I recommend you use firewall software as it will improve the security of your computer by monitoring and controlling outbound connections to the internet as well as inbound. There are various free packages available, such as Sunbelt Personal Firewall and Zone Alarm:
http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Home-Home-…sonal-Firewall/
http://www.zonelabs.com/

Spywareblaster is a free program which prevents the download and installation of Internet Explorer ActiveX based malware by immunizing your system against it. You can download Spywareblaster from here and a tutorial to help you get started is available here.

Consider a custom hosts file such as MVPS HOSTS. This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002
If you install this, be sure to follow the DNS Client service instructions before doing so.
