Hi lucid_dream,

Your HijackThis log doesn't show any malware, but the symptoms you describe sound suspicious so we'll do a couple of checks.

Your Java is outdated and is now a security risk
Go to Start » Control Panel » Add/Remove Programs
Search all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment…. )
(They should have this icon next to it: [external image: Posted Image])
Remove all versions of Java.
Download and install the newest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) (version 6 update 2), from here:
http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp

Then, open HijackThis, choose Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following line:

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=

Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt and close HijackThis.

Download Dr.WEB CureIt to your desktop from here:
ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/cureit.exe
  • Double-click cureit.exe to start the program.
  • Press Start and then OK to start the Express scan
  • The Express scan takes just a few moments to finish, if something is found, click Yes to cure it
  • Once the short scan has finished, Click Options->Change settings
  • Choose the Scan tab and remove the check mark from Heuristic analysis
  • Choose the Actions tab and next to Infected objects select Move, then press OK to close the settings box.
  • Note: These settings changes are IMPORTANT, please ensure you have made them before scanning
  • Select all hard drives to be scanned by clicking on them - choose all drives - a red dot confirms they will be scanned
  • Click the green arrow on the right to start the scan
  • Click Yes to all if it asks if you want to move a file
  • Click File-> Save report list and save the report to your desktop
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit and reboot your computer (this is important as files may be moved/deleted during reboot)
Then please download F-Secure Blacklight
  • Click I ACCEPT and download the graphical user interface version to your Desktop
  • Double click the file to run it, choose I accept the agreement then press Scan
  • It will create the fsbl-xxxxxxx.log on your desktop.
  • The log will have a list of all items found.
  • Do not choose to rename any yet! I want to see the log first because legitimate items can also be present.
  • Exit Blacklight and post the contents of the log in your next reply.
Once complete, please post the Dr Web log, the Blacklight log and a new HijackThis log.
Hi, Do you still need help with your machine? If the instructions are unclear or something isn't working, please let me know before proceeding.
ok here we go….
only one thing i forgot to do was
-Choose the Scan tab and remove the check mark from Heuristic analysis

Hi lucid_dream,

only one thing i forgot to do was
-Choose the Scan tab and remove the check mark from Heuristic analysis

Dr Web's heuristics sometimes flag legitimate files as malware which is why the instructions say to turn it off.
In this case it appears that is exactly what has happened, as it has moved files from AIM and the AOL Triton installer which appear to be legitimate.

The AIM files appear to be cache entries which probably aren't important however you should now check that the program is operating normally. The Triton suite folders have lost their installer programs and won't work properly. We can try and reinstate all the files if you wish but it may be easier to re-download these programs.

Otherwise everything looks fine, are you still experiencing the explorer.exe problems?
i don't use aol anyway and would never so that doesn't matter. well the one thing that helps run it better is when i have zonealarm pro on startup then it runs slower but if i have that off on startup then things are better. so that helps some but things dont run like they used to. my hd is almost full of 80g of stuff 1g ram could upgrade and to a better processor. Manufacturer: NVIDIA Processor: AMD Sempron™ Processor 2800+, MMX, 3DNow, ~1.6GHz Memory: 958MB RAM Hard Drive: 82 GB Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 6100 Operating System: Windows XP Home Edition (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 2 (2600.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519)\ thats all i got to say anything else from you?
Hi lucid_dream,

Yes firewalls can be heavy on resources, but they are very important so I recommend you try a different one such as Sunbelt Personal Firewall or Comodo - both are very good products and are available free.

A full hard drive can cause problems, I recommend you make some space by backing up or adding more storage.
1Gb of RAM is good but more is better :)

I think your machine is clean of malware and here are some tips to help you keep it that way:

Operating system vulnerabilities can easily be exploited by malware so please ensure your operating system is automatically kept up to date by using Windows Update:
Go to Start->Control Panel->Automatic Updates
Select Automatic and select a suitable schedule
Also, check that your antivirus and antispyware programs are set to automatically update daily.

Spywareblaster is a free program which prevents the download and installation of Internet Explorer ActiveX based malware by immunizing your system against it. You can download Spywareblaster from here and a tutorial to help you get started is available here.

Consider a custom hosts file such as MVPS HOSTS. This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002
Note: Be sure to follow the instructions to disable the DNS Client service before installing a custom hosts file.

Please take care when downloading programs. One of the easiest ways to be infected is to download freeware/shareware programs which come laden with malware - this includes allowing websites to install browser plug-ins orActiveX controls. Before downloading, it is crucial to check whether the source is reputable.
One way to check is to use McAfee SiteAdvisor. Copy the domain name into the space provided and SiteAdvisor will give you a report on the website which can help you decide if it is safe. They also have a toolbar for IE and Firefox which adds this functionality to your browser.

Please post back to let me know that you have read this, and if there are any further issues.
i think ZoneAlarm works good after startup when i run after everything else. well i was thinking about getting a new hd prob 250g. what do you think internal or external? i buy from newegg do you know of any good sites to buy from? thx.
Your choice of hard drive might depend on what you're storing on it and whether you have other computers to share data with. I'd normally go for an internal unless I had reasons to want it to be portable. I can't help much with sites to buy from as I don't live in the States! There are other forums here at TC where I'm sure you'll get excellent feedback on those type of questions.
I live in the far east and there's not much in the way of online shopping  I use newegg and other US sites to get the latest prices though, you're lucky in that you have the best prices in the world for computer gear.
It's not a secret, I just don't get into personal conversations with people I don't know :) besides, my profile says roughly where I am anyway. So, anything further with regard to malware removal?
