Below are results from my HijackThis and AVG Anti-Spyware.

My problems started as follows: I type in a seach in the major search engines. A list of websites comes back and I click on the link but I am redirected to other websites. I run McAfee and no trojan, virus, et cetera. I run Lavasoft, but no help. I reinstall IE and try to update to 7.0, no help. Still have same problems.

Thereafter, my outlook is incredibly slow, which is uncharachteristic. Again, I run McAfee. By happen-chance, I watch the last half of the scan. The scan is checking a source of my computer that I do not know, something "hku" followed by a string of hypertext links that I have never visited, mostly porn sites.

So, I wonder if my computer is a zombie. My wireless runs with WPA-PSK, TKIP data encryption so I believe it is unlikely someone on the outside hacked into my network.

I find this site, run Hijackthis and based upon advice in another topic, I run a cleaning utility followed by AVG in safemode. Afterwards, i run HijackThis again. Below are the results. Let me know if you see anything. I have tried about everything I can but I am out of ideas. Thanks for any help in advance.

My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your problem. You are definitely not kidding when you state that your searches are being redirected...they are in fact being redirected through Kiev in the Ukraine.


First we need to deactivate some shields that could prevent some needed registry changes:

Please disable AVG AntiSpyware by opening the program and on the Status page - beside "Resident Shield" click on "change status" so that it says "inactive" for it may interfere with our HJT fix.

• Remember to reactivate this feature when all our work is finished.

We must disable the Real-Time Protection feature of Windows Defender for it may interfere with the changes we need to make.

To disable Real-Time Protection:

• Go to "Tools" | "General Settings"
• Scroll down to "Real-time protection options"
• Uncheck "Turn on real-time protection (recommended)"
• Remember to reactivate this feature when we have finished all our work.

Please RUN HijackThis

• Click the SCAN button to produce a log.

• Now with all the items selected, and all windows closed except for HJT, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window.

Please print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

1. Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:

http://www.bleepingc.../Fixwareout.exe

2. Save it to your desktop and run it.

• Click Next, then Install, then make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
• The fix will begin; follow the prompts.
• You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so.
• Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

3. At the end of the fix, you may need to restart your computer again.


4. Now lets check some settings on your system.
(2000/XP) Only
a. In the windows control panel. If you are using Windows XP's Category View, select the Network and Internet Connections category otherwise double click on Network Connections. Then right click on your default connection, usually local area connection for cable and dsl, and left click on properties. Click the Networking tab. Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS servers automatically
Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks.
That option might not be avaiable on some systems

b. Next Go start run type cmd and hit OK
type
ipconfig /flushdns
then hit enter, type exit hit enter
(that space between g and / is needed)

5. Finally, please post a fresh HijackThis log, along with the contents of the logfile C:\fixwareout\report.txt

Well that part was cleaned up. Time to check the rest of your system.


1. You need to update the version of Java that is currently on your system

• Download the latest version of Java™ SE Runtime Environment 6 Update u1 from HERE
  • Scroll down to where it says "Windows Offline Installation"
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
• Once the program has finished downloading:
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u1-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
• Go back into the Control Panel and double-click the Java Icon.
  • Under Temporary Internet Files, click the Delete Files button.
  • There are three options in the window to clear the cache - Leave ALL 3 CheckedDownloaded Applets
    Downloaded Applications
    Other Files
• Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
  Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
• Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

2. Please ensure that both Windows Defender and AVG AS are disabled for this part again.

3. Now to finish cleaning your log

• First we need to make all files and folders VISIBLE:
  
  • Go to start>control panel>folder options>view (tab)
  • Choose to "show hidden files and folders,"
  • Uncheck the "hide protected operating system files" and the "hide extensions for know file types" boxes.
  • Close the window with ok
• Please RUN HijackThis.
  . Click the SCAN button to produce a log.
  
  
• Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:
  
  O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE
  
  
• Now with the item selected, and all windows closed except for HJT, delete it by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window.
  
  
• Reboot Your System in Safe Mode
  
  How to use the F8 method to Start Your Computer in Safe Mode
  
  
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item
  • Press Enter.
• Using Windows Explorer (Windows Key + E), locate the following files/folders, and DELETE them (if still present):
  
  ALCXMNTR.EXE<==File. You may have to do a search to find this file. If so, go Start>>Search and use the built-in Windows Seach function.
  
  
• Exit Explorer, and REBOOT BACK INTO NORMAL MODE

4. Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Virus Scanner (Use Internet Explorer as your Browser)

Note: If you have used this particular scanner before, you MAY HAVE YO UNINSTALL the program through Add/Remove Programs before downloading the new ActiveX component

Next Click on Free Virus Scanner, then Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

• The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
• Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  
• Now click on Scan Settings
• In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
  • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
  Standard
  
  • Scan Options:
  Scan Archives
  Scan Mail Bases
• Click OK
• Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
• This will program will start and scan your system.
• The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
• Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button:
• Save the file to your desktop.
• Copy and paste that information into your next post along with a fresh HJT log.

The two (2) virus found by Kaspersky are located in your Housecall Quarantine folder. Please empty the Quarantine folder of all its content but don't delete the folder itself.

There are a few things you must do once you are completely clean:

1. Please DELETE Malicious Items from the AVG AntiSpyware Quarantine

A. Open AVG AntiSpyware by double clicking its icon located in the System Tray down by the clock.

B. Click on "Infections" on the AVG AntiSpyware Toolbar, then select the "Quarantine Tab"

C. Choose "Select All" at the bottom of the AVG AntiSpyware window, then click on the "Remove Finally" button and EXIT the program.

2. Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 onlyDouble-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

3. Now Set a New Restore Point to prevent possible reinfection from an old one. Some of the malware you picked up could have been saved in System Restore. Since System Restore is a protected directory, your tools can not access it to delete these bad files which sometimes can reinfect your system. Setting a new restore point AFTER cleaning your system will help prevent this and enable your computer to "roll-back" to a clean working state.

The easiest and safest way to do this is:

• Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click "System Restore".
• Choose the radio button marked "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next". Give the R.P. a name then click "Create". The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore.
• Then go to Start > Run and type: Cleanmgr
• Click "OK".
• Click the "More Options" Tab.
• Click "Clean Up" in the System Restore section to remove all previous restore points except the newly created one.

Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update
regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.

I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

• Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
• Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
• How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
• How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.

To protect yourself further:

• Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
• MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
• Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
