Hijacked In The Uk

Hi. I'm on a working trip in the UK and my browser seems to have been hi-jacked. Everytime I do a search it sends me to two different web sites related to the search topic but not the actual search topic. After two attempts it lets me go where I want. Tried to reset my browser (IE7) and lost the home page. All I have now is runonce. I have PC-cillin, Spysweeper, and XoftspySE, etc. On working the issue I did find that my Phishing control had been turned off in my PC-cillin anti-virus (no idea why) and when I put back on it kills the mis-directed web pages but I still have to repeat the seraches three times to get where I am going. (My favorites or typed in URL's are not affected..)

Thanks for the quick response. The machine still acts the same. Basically, when I do any search in google or yahoo it tries to take me to an associated site of some sort once I click on a URL. For example, if I do a search for Huntley Golf Course, Scotland the search results pull up a list, one of which is the URL to Huntleys home page. When I click on that it tries to take me to some other site such as Johns golf tours in Scotland. It does this twice and then lets me go to the Huntley home page. I say it tries to do this because my phishing program actually blocks it (I found I didn't have it turned on originally) but I still have to page back or repeat the serach twice. My home page is also gone on log in. All I have is some runonce thing.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts.
You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so.
Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

Once the desktop loads a text that will open (report.txt) Please save this file, you'll need to post it with a new HijackThis log.


Next:
Click Start> Run> type in CMD tap enter key
Copy/Paste: ipconfig /flushdns <– Note the space between g /f. It needs to be there.


Now lets check some settings on your system.
Enter your Control Panel and double-click on Network Connections

Then right click on your Default Connection
Usually Local Area Connection for Cable and DSL
Left click on Properties
Double-Click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item
Select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS Servers Automatically
Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two


Reboot and "copy/paste" the text file (report.txt) and a new Hijackthis log

Progress. The search engine issue seems resolved but I haven't had agreat chance to do a thorough test. On a train to another city today and will double check later. In the meantime here are the two logs. Thanks a million!

Yes. No problems with the searches now. You have been a great help and donation coming! Would it be too much to ask what I might need to do in order to get my home page back or should I start with a new post? Thanks, Spanish

With IE open you should be able to click> Tools> Internet Options and set you home page.


You can remove any programs / Tools I had you install. Use Add/Remove Programs to remove if listed there otherwise just delete them and empty recycle bin.

Log looks good :D


You need to create a new Clean restore point.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.



If you dont have any programs like these, I would recommend that you get them.

Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Do not use Ad-aware if you have McAfee's VirusScan and AntiSpyware
