My system, which previously ran perfectly, has begun to produce an annoying "Windows - No Disk" pop-up error message (with the options "Cancel", "Retry", and "Continue") for each drive known to the system during the Windows Boot sequence (after login). Clicking retry repeats the error message for any and all drives. Clicking continue or cancel dispatches the error dialog and, after clicking each meeage, one for each drive, the system appears to work fine.

My system is a AMD Dual-Core processor running Windows XP Pro.

I have run updated AdawareSE and Spybot S&D, both of which have clean scans (no threats identified).
I do not know if the errors still exist after a "Safe Mode" boot, as the system fails to boot in safe mode (something I also do not know if it did before because I have never before had occasion to boot this particular computer to "Safe Mode."
I have run an internet search on the error and see the following items:
- Microsoft says that the message is caused by having a removable media drive as the "C" (or Boot) drive. This is not the case (my "C", "D", and "E" drives are partitions on the same fixed Serial ATA drive). The Boot drive DOES, however, show up in the "Safely Remove Hardware" list under the Icon in the System Tray (I do not remember if it used to be there or not).
- There is apparently an issue with HP machines running XP Media Center. My machine is neither HP nor running XP Media Center.
- One individual posted in a forum, was instructed to run Hijackthis; did so; received instructions to run, check, and fix some items; and was able to clear up the problem.

Based on the last item, I have run the latest released version of Hijackthis, the log from which is posted here:

Hi,

I don't see any malware or spyware present in your log. I think its a hardwre problem you have.
But lets check some things.

* Download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop:
ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/drweb-cureit.exe
  • Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
  • This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
  • Once the short scan has finished, Click Options > Change settings
  • Choose the "Scan"-tab, remove the mark at "Heuristic analysis".
  • Back at the main window, mark the drives that you want to scan.
  • Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
  • Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
  • Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
  • When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found: Posted Image
  • If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:
    Posted Image
This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
  • After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
  • Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit.
  • Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
  • After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously in your next reply.
Regards,

Rosty.

Rosty, Thanks for helping with this. I downloaded DrWeb and ran the scans as directed. No items were detected in the first short scan (in-memory). During the scan of the hard drives, 4 items were found and deleted. The log file is included below. ===================DrWeb.csv Log File Contents===================================== RegUBP2b-rkent.reg;C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Windows Genuine Advantage\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Snapshots;Trojan.StartPage.1505;Deleted.; A0044272.reg;C:\System Volume Information\_restore{59271D40-EA4A-4A0D-BB6B-53631983E106}\RP154;Trojan.StartPage.1505;Deleted.; WarezP2P_TDL.exe;D:\My Download Files;Trojan.DownLoader.10412;Deleted.; A0044273.exe;D:\System Volume Information\_restore{59271D40-EA4A-4A0D-BB6B-53631983E106}\RP154;Trojan.DownLoader.10412;Deleted.; ========================================================================== I do not believe there are any problems with the hardware itself, as there is more than one device and more than one interface (IDE, SATA, and USB) exhibiting the behavior. In retrospect, if this is not being caused by a piece of malware, I suspect it may possibly be a system file or driver that was replaced when a new USB flash drive was used temporarily on the system and it's drivers were automagically installed by Windows. I just don't know how to find it or what to do with it. My antivirus program seems to create a restore point every day when it updates its definitions, and I don't remember exactly when this behavior started. Anyway, have a look at the log and let me know where you think I should go from here. Thanks again, Robert Kent

Hi RobertKent, I'm not seeing anything bad. 1. Make sure no external devices like a hard drive or USB thumb drive are plugged in. Note: If no devices and issue still there. 2. Use msconfig and uncheck everything but anti-virus and firewall. How to use MSCONFIG: Please click on start, then run, and type msconfig and then press enter. When the window opens click on the startup tab and make sure there are checkmarks in every entry, except for your antivirus and firewall. Then press ok until you are out of the program. Reboot and let me know if the problem still excist.
