is there a program out there that is like norton on the diagnostics? i want the windows fix thing and hard disk fix that norton has, but i don't want nortons snail of a program on my puter. so i was wondering if you would know of anything?
Looks like you are running with XP?
XP has its own native utilities for finding and repairing/replacing missing or corrupted Windows system files.
It's called Windows File Protection System File Checker. (SFC for short)
XP also has two levels of Disk maintenance utilities.
1. Disk CleanUp and Disk Defragmenter clean out the extra junk files and organize the system and application files
2. CHECKDISK does a physical surface scan to identify bad-clusters on the disk surface, tags them, and provides instructions so that Windows doesn't mistakenly try to write to those locations.
Your hard drive manufacturer, probably Maxtor/Western Digital/ or Seagate will have their own free versions of something like:
Drive Fitness Test for their Hard Drive.
Browse to the appropriate Website and download their utility.
