I am getting unsolicited adverts, spurious (and probably fraudulent) security warnings, and some erratic problems with slow processing, occasional hangs etc.

The following scans have been performed, both in normal and Safe modes:

Adaware - nothing of importance
AVG - Clean
CCleaner - registry unremarkable
PandaScan - clean
Stinger - clean
Spybot - reports it's own files as suspect!
Spyware Doctor: 2 x Virtumonde
Quarantined
Security task Manager:
Reports 3 high risk dlls:
cbxvuuv.dll
geed.dll
igbmbjbx.dll
All quarantined - but are resinstated on re-boot

Ran Symantec FxVmonde.exe - said no VirtuMonde found

Would be grateful for any help

Many thanks

Hi and welcome to the forums. :) I'm Markka and I will be helping you with your malware issues. I'll check your HijackThis log. Right now I'm MRU Undergrad, everything that I post to you must be checked by teachers of Malware Removal University. Please be patient. :)
Hello :)

You've on your computer vundo (VirtuMonde) infection, even if Symantec FxVmonde.exe said no found ;)

But start with this:

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot.
Dear Markka Your help was invaluable - VundoFix did the job. If you have the time, could you help me learn? Was it the description of erratic behaviour which lead you to diagnose virtuMonde (Vundo) or did my HJT log contain the clues? If a suspect file or a suspect registry entry gets re-instated on re-boot, where do I find the process which re-instates it? I use Security Task Manager which helps recognise suspicious activity, but often a deleted suspect re-appears. What exactly does VundoFix do? Many thanks for getting rid of my headache Philip
Hi :)

If you would like to learn something about HijackThis and etc., then you should start training in a HijackThis school. :)

Was it the description of erratic behaviour which lead you to diagnose virtuMonde (Vundo) or did my HJT log contain the clues?

You can recognize vundo if in a HjT log is same .dll file in O2-lines and O20. Example from your log:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {48260B45-29E7-4790-9D01-51C129090885} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\geedd.dll
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {4C4E97AF-9583-4213-B084-07215A7F6D01} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\cbxvuuv.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: cbxvuuv - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\cbxvuuv.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: geedd - C:\WINDOWS\system32\geedd.dll

As you can see, same .dll file :)

You should post these logs here, because we have still some jobs what needs to do :)

Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.

Panda online scanner works only with IE!

  • Please go HERE to run PandaActiveScan…

  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
  • A new window will open…click the Check Now button
  • Enter your Country
  • Enter your State/Province
  • Enter your e-mail address and click send
  • Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)

  • When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location. Post the contents of the ActiveScan report.

Dear Markka

Panda's Active scan as follows:

Potentially unwanted tool:Application/Processor Not disinfected D:\Zip Install\Anti-Virus Stuff\SmitFraud\SmitfraudFix.zip[SmitfraudFix/Process.exe]

Please Note: The references to dlcctime.dll I have investigated at length previously. They all seem to be legitimate parts of my Dell (ie Lexmark) printer installation, and are validated OK by AVG

The SmitFraud files refer to utilities I previously installed to rid myself of SmitFraud. They too pass AVG - but I suppose may contain a signature which Panda doesn't like.

Dear Markka My machine is running fast and clean now. In the process of following your instructions I have of course learnt a lot - I always do after getting infected, and that is interesting in its own right. One of the best challenges for (usually hospital) doctors is the patient with an unexplained fever - (called Pyrexia of Unknown Origin - PUO). Usually the longer they remain undiagnosed, the rarer or more bizarre the final diagnosis. An occasional patient remains a mystery - and rather sinisterly - many of these turn out eventually to have something nasty. There are many parallels with malware and Windows. I rate you as a Top Physician - MANY THANKS Philip
