This machine came to my attention pretty much "dead in the water".
It would boot all the way to Windows about 50% of the time, but then stall out when attempting to open "anything", even Windows Explorer.

Successful Booting to SAFE Mode was also a 50-50 deal, with the same stall, though I could sometimes access MSCONFIG or Control Panel. I'm not clear about what I was and wasn't able to do in SAFE Mode and don't want to make SAFE Mode the issue at this time.

I was able to use the HP Hardware Scan from SAFE Mode, and found "All Passed".
I was able to use System Restore from SAFE Mode. <--- That's why the machine is even running at this time.
I rolled back to a Restore Point about two months ago.
_________

What I've noticed:

6TO4 Adapter <--39 instances of this adapter appear in Device Manager – Network Adapters
(All but one instance is now gone in this Restore Point)

isatap. {03C3FBDE-B1F1-4088-A437-F5BE54990C4D} <-- 11 instances of this adapter appear in Device Manager – Network Adapters
(All but one instance is now gone in this Restore Point)

Realtek TRL8139/819x Family Fast Ethernet NIC <--I believe this is the NIC installed

Teredo Tunneling Pseudo-Interface

WAN Miniport (IP)
WAN Miniport (Ipv6)
WAN Miniport (L2TP)
WAN Miniport (PPPOE)
WAN Miniport (PPTP)

Also:
Attempts to Navigate in Windows Explorer continue to be prevented with "Access Denied" for:
My Documents
My Music
My Pictures
Application Data
Local Settings
__________________

I'm able to navigate pretty much everywhere else, for instance:
c:\Program Files
Some Document Folders
C:\
C:\Windows
E:\ (optical drive)
_______________

The machine is running "fairly well" at this time, though VISTA is pretty slow with just 1gb of RAM

Hi dough, everything looks normal in the log.

I had the same errors when I had free AVG on my Vista....and, you won't get the second error, if you click on 'run as administrator' when launching HJT.

I believe this item may belong to scan mail (AVG) C:\Windows\SMINST\launcher.exe

Silentrunners will work on Vista......

http://www.silentrun...ent Runners.zip

1. Unzip/extract the file to its own folder:
C:\Silent Runners.
3. Double-click the SilentRunners.vbs inside the folder or on your desktop
to start.
4. A message box will appear asking if you want to skip the supplemental
searches.
5. Press "Yes" to skip [default] or "No" to include them.
6. Another message box will appear saying: "Silent Runners has started. A
message box like this will appear when its done." The tool will scan your
system and create a log by default, in the same directory as the script or
one your desktop. The log is named "Startup Programs (ComputerName)
date/timestamp.txt".
7. When finished, the next message to appear will say: "All Done! the
results are in the file..." (it will provide the full path location of the
log.
8. Copy & paste the log in your next reply.

Note: If you have a script blocking program you may get a warning asking if
you want to allow the script to run. Some will say "malicious script
warning" or something to that effect. There is nothing malicious about this
script, you can click to allow it to execute.

Sorry about the delay is what should have been a simple reply.
Irony is that SilentRunners decided to unzip itself into --
C:\Users\Leroy\AppData\Local\Temp\Temp2_SilentRunners.zip\
FileName is: StartUp Programs (Leroy-PC) 2007-04-12-20-18.14.txt

Irony is that UserName Leroy does not have permission to navigate to that location, even though Leroy is an Administrator.

So I Created a new User, as: Doug - with administrative permissions.
But to complicate the situation, SilentRunners only allows 9 seconds to reply in the screen prompts, before it just goes ahead and runs.
It only identifies the "location" of the eventual .txt file, is a brief portion of those 9 seconds, before it just disappears.

I ran it 3 times to get the full read on the eventual location of where the darn file is saved.
(should something be done to urge the author to allow user-action to advance the screen prompts, instead of the brief and relentless automatic movement throught the scripts, resulting in possible user-confusion?)

Here's SilentRunners Text file:
"Silent Runners.vbs", revision R50, http://www.silentrunners.org/
Operating System: Windows Vista RC1
Output limited to non-default values, except where indicated by "{++}"

dough, Leroy's Administrator 'rights' don't look like he's the true Admin. He is in a sense, but not a full Admin. I guess you could call it a "roaming user/Admin because he owns the computer.

Me again....read through this article:
http://blogs.msdn.co.../22/516066.aspx

It may explain things much easier than I ever could.
Also, this OS was so new back in Dec 2006, that I would have my doubts that it was installed and set up correctly.
