How frustrating. Repairing home wireless connection is generally one of my least favorite pass-times.
The steps to solution can be quite simple, and can also be quite complicated.
Presumably, you have a DSL Modem that your Netgear Wireless Router connects to?
Have you "re-initialized" the Modem?
Instructions for doing so are usually printed on the bottom of the Modem.
(Working with the Modem, is "very unlikely to solve anything" since you already know that you can get Internet access via CAT5 Ethernet cable to your Router, which is gaining access from the DSL Modem.)
___________
It is much more likely that the Configuration/Setup of the Router, and of the Network Interface Card (NIC) on the machine that you recently cleaned in Malware Removal, is the culprit.
Start by determining the Status of your Network Connection: Go to Control Panel - Network Connections
You may have a dial-up connection listed
and then at least (2) two BroadBand connections
one for the "wired connection"
one for the "wireless connection"
What is the status of these two Broadband Connections? Should be "Connected"
It may show "limited or no connection" for the Wireless Connection.
________
Click on your Wireless Connection - just to Highlight it.
The click on File - Repair - to allow Windows to repair the connection if it is able.
Does your Wireless Connection Status "Change" to "Connected"?
__________
Next:
Look in your Device Manager.
Is there a yellow or red warning next to your Network Adapter?
If so, select Remove, and then Reboot.
Windows will "find new hardware" and attempt to "install drivers for new hardware"
You will need the Installation CD for your NIC.
___________
Next:
Now you are ready to use the Wireless Router Connection Setup routine.
The problem could be as simple as needing to "Select" the correct connection from the various signals that are available.
The problem could be as simple as entering the Correct Encryption Password.
Some ISP's have their own Encryption Password and "require" that you use it.
Other ISP's allow you to Create your own Encryption Password.
Do you know which condition you have with your ISP.
________
At this point, I'll need you to provide additional information, in order to recognize what you are dealing with in the setup procedure.
Often, at this point,
(knowing that your Modem, Router, and NIC are all properly installed and functioning, but still needing to configure the Connection with the ISP)
it is easiest to contact the ISP via telephone and have one of their Techs walk you through the Wireless SetUp. There is no charge for this type of telephone assistance from your ISP.
hi thanks for replying i have been intouch with "sky broadband" (my isp) and they said uninstall and re-install the software which i explained i have now done this 10 times! (they are as much use as a chocolate fireguard, i don't think they even understand english sounds like a call centre in india or something) i have been on the netgear website and sent an e-mail explaining the problem every time i reinstall the software the adaptor flashes then stops flashing loses connection then when i try repairing it it disables the adaptor for some reason then the icon dissapears without a trace i have downloaded an update from netgear for my wg111 v2 (adapter) i have looked on fault finding but it is pretty vague and helpless when i uninstall and re-install the software it comes up with wireless connection 10 not connected then i repair and it say disabled then i try enabling it and it says "enabling failed!" i don't know what to try and dont know how to delete the log file for all the previous connections as i am thinking maybe that is the problem (it keeps a record of times connection has been installed every time i uninstall it and re-install it)??? any ideas at all i would be gratedul or any sites or downloads you could recommend to help me figure this out?
Hi Cookie1,
Were you able to resolve your situation?
How's the machine running at this time.
Wireless conntection enabled?
Please let us know what worked for you.
Or tell us how we can be of any further assistance.
Best Regards
still the same as before i don't know how to erase/remove previous logs so i am still running through a wired connection as wireless won't enable no news from netgear either donn't know what else to do i guess i will have to resign myself to a life of inconvenient trailed wire across my living room and keep an eye on my baby daughter as i can't find anyone to help me out with this problem
Ok so you have a modem AND a router correct? Or is it all in one like a 2wire modem/router? The adapter (while repairing) will disable itself, it has to in order to dump the dns cache. The question there is, does it successfully complete the repair?
The best thing to do is this, go in to control panel and click on system. Under the "hardware" tab click on the device mangler (a little mac/Windows humor there) and check to make sure that all your devices are installed properly and none of them have issues. You'll see it if anything has an issue. Once you have all your devices and their drivers installed correctly, turn off the computer…completely shut it down. Take the side panel off of the tower and make sure that your network adapter is seated snug and correctly (if your using integrated networking (built in to the board) then you dont need to worry about pulling the panel off). Next, unplug every CAT5 from the computer, the Modem and/or the Router. You should have nothing but the power connecting to the modem and/or router now. Look on the back side of the router and see if you can find the "reset" button (modem and/or router) and find a ballpoint pen or something to stick in there to push the reset button. IMPORTANT you need to hold the reset button down (or pushed in rather) for atleast 32 seconds. That will successfully complete a "hard reset". The way you can normally tell is to watch the lights as your holding the reset button. One, two, all, some of the lights (depending upon manufacturer) will change colors and blink a couple times letting you know it is complete. Once you've reset your modem/router/both, and this is probably the most important thing, have all your wired connections plugged in to the computers that are going to be wired. FIRST, plug your modem into the cable/phone line (your DSL signal) and WAIT till it sync's up BEFORE you plug anything else in to it. Once the modem shows the DSL is connected and all the lights except the ethernet/LAN are lit up then go ahead and plug in the line that will go to the router. (if your using a modem/router then obviously you wont have a plug to the router so just plug in ONE wired connection). Now plug in ONLY ONE wired connection. Now go to that computer that has the wired connection (and make sure there are NO other wired or wireless connections) and open IE and type in http://192.168.0.1 and you should receive a popup asking for a screenname and password. Use the screen name Admin and the password is password (thats not a typo…the password is literally "password" without the quotes of course) …it should look like this:

Now… configure your router/modem to your liking… close the administration page… and hook up the rest of your connections. (if your using a router and a modem, before you hook up the rest of your connections, after you close the administration page, you will more than likely have to log back into your isp in order for your internet to work correctly. If this is the case, after you close the admin page and reopen IE it should automatically open the log in page for your isp. If it does not, type in http://home).
Now you should be set
