Thanks in advance to all of those who are giving my situation a thought, Basically I'm using a desktop computer and before a month ago it could connect to my wireless network downstairs, I don't know what has happened but now it won't find the router even if i bring it 2 feet away. As a temp solution, I am using a netgear adapter to solve the issue. The problem being is that it keeps disconnecting and I'm beginning to get sick of it. info: Windows: Vista SP2 2 year old computer. Virus free,,, NETGEAR WG111v3 54Mbps Wireless USB 2.0 Adapter (Adapter) Realtek 8185 Extensible 802.11b/g Wireless Device I appreciate your time. Tej

Though I do not recognize all of the features that you list for your Router, it does appear that you have it set up correctly, except that you do not have encryption protection WPA or WPA2. Maybe you are holding off on encryption protection at this time until you get your machine to connect wirelessly, and then will apply protection? You also haven't given a Name (SSID) to your Router. (you should and should create a password as well) You should write down your SSID/Password and the WPA/WPA2 encryption password/passphrase _______________________________ Please go to your Network and Sharing Center Please let us know what connections are available. Are you able to use Diagnose and Repair?

Sorry. I did not mean for you to write down your Password here in the Forum. Not a good idea, and I recommend you now change it. I'll give the rest of your topic some more thought.
Please have a look in your Device Manager. Control Panel - Device Manager Then look at the item: Network Adapters It should list both the network adapter that you were previously using, and the netgear adapter you've added to try for solution. _____________ There should be no yellow or red warnings, and no (!) black exclaimation points. If there are, then your adapter driver is either missing or corrupted. Recommendation: Reinstall the Network Adapter Driver. ___________________ If there are no items appearing under Network Adapters (in device manager) there might be some items in "Other". This would indicate that for some reason the network adapter is no longer installed. Recommendation: Go to the computer manufacturer's website to download and install Driver for your Network Adapter
Let's get a better look at your Hardware.

Please Run the PCPitstop.com OverDrive Full Tests

Here's how:

You must use your Internet Explorer for this procedure. (doesn't work so well in Firefox or others). If your machine is running Vista or Windows 7, you must Select IE to “Run as Administrator”. After completing PCPitstop OverDrive you can close your IE browser and re-open it Normally so that you are no longer running as administrator.

Go to: http://www.pcpitstop.com
Click on "Free Computer Check-up" listed below PC Pitstop OverDrive
In the User Login - Click on "Sign up FREE!"
You'll need to submit a valid email address and create your own password, then click - Create Account(button)

Now enter your email address and password to Log in, Select - Scan this system Now!(button)
You will then be asked to download an ActiveX component and allow it to install.
It is safe and does not compromise your privacy.
Follow the on-screen prompts to install the ActiveX and to allow the Full Tests to be run on your machine.

The Full Tests take about 2 1/2 - 3 minutes on most machines.
When complete, a Results - Summary - Recommended Fixes will be displayed.

Please post the URL internet address, from your Results, back here into this Topic Thread so that we can review the configuration and present performance levels of your machine.

Note: During the graphics 2D and graphics 3D testing, your screen will display some rapidly moving objects.
If you are sensitive to visual flashing, it may cause dizziness. Therefore, look away from the screen during that portion of the testing.

After reviewing the results we will be more informed and may be able to provide better recommendations for you to work towards improving your machine's performance.

While PCPitstop does offer a variety of Paid Products, the PCPitstop OverDrive testing is FREE. Please ignore the references to Paid Products. At WTT we prefer to provide manual solution instructions that you can apply directly to your machine.

Best Regards
I think you downloaded the wrong driver.

Here's what I think you need:

It downloads as a .Zip file.

Create a New Folder and then place the Zip file into the New Folder (vista3264-v6.1113.0215.2008.zip)
Double-click to extract the contents into the Folder.
Eventually, you will use the VistaX86 subFolder, which contains what you need: Net8185.inf
________________________________

Now head on over to your Device Manager again.
Double-click on the RealTek 8185 device to expand the options.
Click on Driver(tab) then select Update Driver
Then Select the second option: Browse my computer for Driver Software - Locate and install driver software manually)
the Net8185.inf is the file from which the Driver will be installed.
Hi It let me locate the folder but not the file. I then clicked next anyway and it said everything is already up to date. I then tried to paste the net8515 location but did not work either. Sorry to be a problem but its still occurring. —————————————– EDIT: Tried without subfolders and it updated the drive, however the problem still occurs even when i restarted the computer.

Sorry to be a problem but its still occurring.

No need for Sorry.

You are not a problem.
Your machine presently is stuck with a problem.

Part of the joy and the agony of volunteering at a help site, is to try to figure out solutions for difficult problems.

If anything, I'm sorry for not more promptly locating a solution.

Let's go after it from a different direction…

Go to Start > Run > type in CMD to open a command prompt.

Type in the following command in the command prompt and press Enter.

netsh int ip reset reset.log Press - Enter

Then also type the following command and hit enter.

netsh winsock reset catalog

Once that completes then restart the system and see then if you are able to get online.
