Hello there,

I think there is something on my computer, that my spyware/virus scanners aren't getting. My sound card doesn't work once in a while, and for some reason my start menu changes colors now and then. I noticed that I keep getting a windows update icon in my system tray everytime i restart, but there are no updates. Sometimes it says that it already downloaded the updates and that I have to restart. Also I get a wuauclt.exe and a wmiprvse.exe in the processes list on the task manager. I restarted once and I couldn't click anything, nothing would open up, not even the task manager.

I restarted in safe mode and ran S&D, Adware, Ewido and AVG scans. Ewido found 2 cookies with problems, but I really don't think that was the problem. The other programs didn't find anything.

I was hoping that somebody could look at my HiJackThis logfile and see if there is something wrong, and if there is, then possibly help me get rid of whatever is making my computer abnormal.

Hello and Welcome to the forum.

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = local.,;*.local
O18 - Protocol: x-excid - {9D6CC632-1337-4A33-9214-2DA092E776F4} - c:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\mimectl.dll

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Delete this File if listed:
c:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\mimectl.dll

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

After i restarted i got an error report that said:
Generic Host Process for Win32 Services has encountered a problem and needs to close.

I clicked on the technical report and it listed these files:
C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER2b57.dir00\svchost.exe.mdmp
C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER2b57.dir00\appcompat.txt

While the error report was present, the start button changed to a gray rectangular button, instead of the green "bubble". I clicked send error report and it went back to normal.

I opened my mixer controls to see if they were there, and they were...before the error report popped up...now they are not...
If i click the mixer controls it says : there are no active mixer devices available.

On a lighter note, i did NOT get a windows update notification upon restart. :-D :-/

There are 3 files that I can't delete from the Temp folder: ~DF1E45.tmp ~DF94B8.tmp ~DFAE98.tmp Each one has the same message pop up if I try to delete it: Cannot delete (file): It is being used by another person or program. Close any programs that might be using the file and try again. I had nothing open while attempting to delete them, just the Temp folder itself.

~DF1E45.tmp ~DF94B8.tmp ~DFAE98.tmp Those are OK, they won't delete but go away on reboot but come back anyway. Were you able to remove the others? Post a new HJT log

You can remove any programs I had you install. Use Add/Remove Programs to remove if listed there:

Log looks good :D

You need to create a new Clean restore point.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

If you dont have any programs like these, I would recommend that you get them.
Spywareblaster,
Spywareguard.

Also get a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Do not use Ad-aware if you have McAfee's VirusScan and AntiSpyware

Safe Surfing. :D

I would also suggest you read this:

Now I just have a problem with my sound... If i restart i can open up the mixer controls by double clicking the volume icon in the notification area. The windows opening sound will play when i restart, but if a try to play a song on media player or another program i have, then they won't play. it says: Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be functioning properly. I left the volume control window open while attempting to play the music, and the window is still open, and the volume control works. but if i right click on the volume icon and open the sound and audio devices properties, it shows that i have no audio device. i also just noticed that my start menu has reverted again to the gray rectangular start button. the basic beeps and such still work. Any suggestions?...please :-p
