My family informed me of an issue with my computer. First I noticed that my desktop background had been changed to a security warning with a link to click to "get help". I tried control-alt-delete to bring up task manager to see what processes were running, but got a message that it was disabled by the system admin. which is me, and I didn't do it. I now get a web page that pops up trying to get me to buy some antivirus software. There is also an icon on my menu bar that looks a lot like the windows updated icon which keeps telling me to install security updates. when i right click to remove it it sends me to a web ad for security software. Also, the windows security center keeps popping up telling me I have a virus, it's named 3 or 4, but the layout/colors are all messed up in the pop up. I've run AVG and spybot which both detect a number of viruses, but can't remove them. Every time I run them (even in safe mode) they bring up the same issues.

Here is my log. Any help is much appreciated. Getting close to f-disk,
Jim

Run HJT and click on Open the Misc Tools section.
  • Click Open Uninstall Manager...
  • Click Save list... and save it to your Desktop.
  • Copy and paste the file uninstall_list.txt into your next reply.

Does the PC have an up-to-date anti-virus installed? By up-to-date, I mean does the AV update?

Well, I don't run it all the time, but I have ad-aware. spybot, and another that I usually update once a month, and run. After reading the self help here I installed AVG and updated it and ran it. As for things like norton, and zone alarm, I got so sick of them hoggin resources and blocking every mouse click that I disabled them. I just held my mouse over the (new)AVG icon and it says it updated today.

That's why your PC is infected - it takes about fifteen minutes online for an unprotected PC to pick up infections, and i'd guess that yours has been unprotected for a lot longer than that.
Given that malware has had such a free reign over your PC, my best advice to you is to reformat and reinstall Windows. There's no real way to know exactly what you've picked up, or what it has done to your PC. Not only has it dropped malicious files all over your hard drive, it may also have infected or replaced legitimate files and lowered security settings on your PC to make reinfection that much easier. In short, it's going to be impossible to guarantee a clean computer at the end of this, and attempting it isn't the best use of your time or mine.
If you want links to free security programs that will help keep your PC clean in future, let me know.

Do you know how I can get a legitamate windows disk ? I bought the pc at best buy with windows pre installed, and they didn't provide a disk . Also, I need to save a lot of documents off of this before I hose it, and I'm not looking forward to reinstalling drivers, is there a risk in saving off drivers to a usb drive and then re-installing them ? Like could the drivers hold viruses ? Thanks, Jim.

The PC may have a hidden partition with Windows installed to allow you to Factory Restore the PC without a disc. If you go to Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management and select Disc Management, this will show you if you have more than one partition on your hard drive.
If you don't have that you can either purchase one, or try something slightly different in Linux - it's a free OS that comes in various flavours, one of which may suit you. Ubuntu is one such option, and it offers the ability to burn the OS to a disc and boot from it without actually installing anything - you'll just need to set your PC to boot from your CD-ROM before your hard drive. If you don't like it, or it doesn't run happily on your computer, you just shut it down as you do Windows and take the CD out - job done.

The drivers could have been infected, but I can't say whether they actually are or not - sorry, but that's the way that it is. Text files shouldn't be a risk, so they can be backed up as normal.

Avg Free Edition: Available here.
avast! 4 Home Edition: Available here
AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic: Available here

While you can download both to see which one you prefer, only install one at a time - running two or more anti-virus programs simultaneously can cause conflicts resulting in less, not more, protection.

There are a few free firewalls available.
Comodo Firewall Pro, available here.
PC Tools Firewall Plus, available here.
Online Armor Free, available here.

It is important to note that you should only have one firewall installed at a time, but you can download them all to your Desktop and install each in turn to see which one you prefer.

It looks like there is a hidden partition, but I'm a total rookie at this, can you tell me how to access that to reinstall ? WIll it be an option in the boot process ? Thanks again. Jim

Post the manufacturer, model name and/or number of the PC and i'll see what I can find out - alternatively, if the PC is branded, take a trip to their website and see what you can find out..

Taken from http://www.vaio-link...=voe_en_gb_cons
http://kb.sony-europ...499/A01305.html
http://kb.sony-europ...499/V00078.html
The first is a straight-forward Factory Restore using the hidden partition and the second allows you to create back-up discs and do pretty much the same thing from them.
If neither is exactly what you can see on your PC, you'll need to refer to the first link and enter your PC's details and work from there.
