Recently I upgraded to Norton 2006. Bad move . With limited computer knowledge, I have spent numerous weekends trying to iron out glitches. Just when I think everything is working several different issues arose:1) I get an "Invalid Backweb application ID 1379" massage, 2) computer runs really slow. I know NAV '06 causes some of that, but I think some things could be removed from Startup but not sure what is safe to turn off, 3) computer is now freezing at Standby and Shut down. Could you please help me?
Thanks for responding. I am not sure where I should have posted since I am blindly blundering my way through this. I have never sought help through a forum, and I guess I figured this forum was a good place to start. So far I have followed all instructions for downloading and runing cleanup programs– Ad-Aware SE, Spybot SD, AVG spyware, ATF cleaner and Hijackthis. Any help you can give will be greatly appreciated. Here is my log:

Hi Kathy and you are certainly welcome. We have Other Computer Problems here:
http://forums.tomcoyote.org/index.php?showforum=83 where they help with issues not malware related, but I am not sure we have what you are looking for. Someone will always be glad to direct you to the information you are looking for, and once we get rid of the Backweb issue, I will post links that will help you accomplish what you wish.

To start with, the Backweb issues are being caused by Hewlett Packard, see this information from CastleCops: http://www.castlecops.com/startuplist-1436.html They owned up to this at one time, but now they even closed the information link. I am sure without going into detail, you are aware of what is happening in upper management at HP.
More information: http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintas…backweb-137903/
http://www.windowsstartup.com/wso/detail.php?id=1122
http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navc…%2d137903%2eexe
So my suggestion is to uninstall the junk and check for updates yourself.

Let's remove it and anything else I see and do a litle cleaning like this:

1) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

3) C:\Program Files\Webroot\Spy Sweeper\SpySweeper.exe << do you own this product? It is a good product, but if it is on your computer as a results of a trial, uninstall it.

4) C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5\avgas.exe <<< do you own this product? If it was a trial and the trial is over, disable it in Services so it IS NOT running. You may keep the scanner with free update if you have the space for it.

5) Start > Control Panel > Add Remove programs and uninstall this one:
C:\Program Files\Updates from HP\137903\Program\BackWeb-137903.exe
While you are there, look for any program that does not belong there and uninstall it also. If you are unsure, let me know and I will look.

6) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O4 - Global Startup: Updates from HP.lnk = C:\Program Files\Updates from HP\137903\Program\BackWeb-137903.exe
(you may leave that restriction if you placed it)
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present
O16 - DPF: {DBA230D1-8467-4e69-987E-5FAE815A3B45} -

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

7) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart the computer post a new HJT log so I can have a look.

You do have programs running at startup that you probably do not need. It is unfortunate that Norton is not one of them, do not turn off any security programs unless they are they ones I mentioned earlier.
This link will show you the way: http://netsquirrel.com/msconfig/

These links, and they should all work, will help you identify what is running on your computer:
http://www.answersthatwork.com/Tasklist_pages/tasklist.htm
http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_index.htm
http://computercops.biz/StartupList.html
http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/

And these links will help you tune the computer so it runs like a BMW.
http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiem…owcomputer.html
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/IE/commun…s/IEtopten.mspx
http://vlaurie.com/computers2/Articles/runbetter.htm
http://www.linkgrinder.com/tutorials/10_Ea…rs_article.html
http://www.techbuilder.org/recipes/59201471

And this one will take you to a free diagnostic check that may spot issues we cannot see:

Dear pskelley,
I really hate computers! I teach at a technology magnet elementary school and know just enough about them to get me in trouble! Her is what I did with your directions:, I did #1 and2. I encountered problem on #3. Several weeks ago my paid subscription to Spy Sweeper ran out and I tried to uninstall. It only partially uninstalled, and thenI kept getting a message that said "File C:\program files\webroot\spysweeper\unis000.dat" does not exist.Cannot uninstall." I tried to go in through C:\Programs and remove webroot file that way. Computer wouldn't let me. It kept saying access denied. I tried reinstalling Spy Sweeper and then uninstalling. That didn't work. I kept getting error messages on start up, so I just disabled it in startup list. On #4 I unstalled freeware version of AVG Anti Spyware. On #5, I removed Backweb 137903 but need you to look for any other stuff that needs to be removed. Did #6. On #7,my HJT says “ 04-Global Startup:Updates from HP.Ink.Disabled.” I checked anyway and ran HJT.
Thanks for your patience and help!
Kathy

Kathy, Your computer is your friend :) Let's tackle the Spysweeper issue first, because it is running and resource intense (you give up enough resources to Symantec you can't avoid). There is nothing wrong with the program, but there are really no benefits unless you purchase. Let's disable the program in Services first like this: Disable the Service
Click Start > Run and type services.msc then OK
Scroll down to Webroot Spy Sweeper Engine and right click on it.
Click Properties and under Service Status click Stop, then under Startup Type change it to Disabled.

Now since you said you tried to uninstall it in Add Remove Programs (always best to try that first for a cleaner uninstall) let's delete the folder manually. If it gives you any problems, just boot to safe mode (when it will not be running) and delete it there:
Safe Mode tut: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial61.html
Navigate to and delete this folder: C:\Program Files\Webroot\ <<< delete the folder. After a reboot you should have seen the last of it.

Here is another file you can delete while in safe mode: O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE This file should be in C:\Windows\ read about it first:
http://www.castlecops.com/startuplist-180.html Removal is totally optional but I suggest it, Realtek has no business collecting data about you, especially since they never bothered to ask.

This line: O20 - Winlogon Notify: WRNotifier - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\WRLogonNTF.dll is frem SpySweeper and it is often left behind, just use HJT to remove it.
In case you need the information: http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

Your HJT log looks clean of malware, I still see programs running that are probably not needed at every startup, but I assume that is still a work in progress. If you have any problems, let me know, otherwise I will close this topic in about a week.

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
