Hi,
Lately I've been having blue screen errors almost every time my laptop starts up, and also I get random Windows Explorer errors that lock everything up and usually require a system restart.
And also the fan seems to be spinning at max. speed far too often…usually starts up even with minor processes, such as viewing a picture…
Any help would be appreciated.
Hi,
Sorry to hear of the problems with your laptop.
The excessive spin time of the cooling fan is sometimes associated with a build up of dust around the fan/CPU/Heatsink areas leading to overheat which can cause all sorts of problems including eventual complete shutdown or even permanent damage so it would be best to concentrate on this to start with.
If your computer has not been serviced in the past 12 months then perhaps it is becoming due, and the dust issue can be addressed at the same time. For further information please see this thread: http://forums.tomcoyote.org/index.php?showtopic=75161
Please note the warranty/guarantee, personal safety and anti static comments as its really important you follow these.
When this has been done it would be sensible to check that the Windows protected system files are all present have not become corrupted in any way and are in the right location.
You can do this by:
1 Clicking on Start
2 Click on Run
3 In the box that appears type:
sfc /scannow
Please note the space between the "c" and the "/" is essential.
This will start the Microsoft Windows System File Checker which is an integral part of the Windows XP operating system. On a typical system it will take 20 minutes or so to run and if it finds no problems will simply close without displaying any message. If it finds problems then it will try to fix them automatically by copying acrross the damaged or missing files. Windows may ask you to insert your Windows XP installation disc, so be sure to have this handy. If you do not have one for your computer, or can't find it, then there are some work-arounds but it is best, by far, to borrow one and use that, just be sure that it is for the correct version, Home or Pro and if for example you are running XP Service Pack 2 then it's the installation disc for XP with SP2 included. (A manufacturers Restore disc is NOT used for this procedure)
Hope this helps
