Dear Sir,
I have bought a new laptop ACER 5583WXMi.
However I'm having lots of problems in the first week and this does not make me much happy about my new toy.
Here is the Hijack this header……
Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1
Scan saved at 12:23:44 PM, on 1/2/2007
Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600)
MSIE: Internet Explorer v7.00 (7.00.5730.0011)
At first I had lots of small problems which I solved by doing the updates that the "Microsoft Report the error" pointed out. However now I'm at a loss.
It all seems to have started when I installed a USB to serial converter. The installation went on fine.
I use the converter to connect to a satellite receiver, since laptops do not come with serial ports. The receiver software only allows use of com ports 1 to 4. According to the "Device Manager", com ports 1 to 6 were aleady in use, but when I searched where, I could not find where port 2 was used. This is where I was stupid……I decided to use com port 2 although risking to create a conflict. The converter worked fine but on my next reboot problems started.
At first the PC did not detect the audio hardware. It still played the windows sounds but gave an error when clicking on the volume control or when trying to play MP3 or WAV files.
After lots of reboots and uninstalling the converter, sound came back to normal. Then i started having problems with the internet dial-up software. I did try to re-install it and after lots of frustration everything was back to normal. But after 1 day of no-trouble use, problems start again. After windows start up, an error as indicated in the title pops up. This does not make the windows freeze but the audio problem is back again and the dial-up software goes crazy.
The error generated a folder named "WERfcf0.dir00" containing 4 files namely "svchost.exe.hdmp",
"svchost.exe.mdmp", "appcompat.txt", "manifest.txt". If you want, I can paste the contents of the text files.
I know I gave a lot of details but hopefully it can help.
One last thing to mention is how the dial-up software goes crazy….. it manages to make connection, verifies password etc…. but IExplorer does not manage to find the web-pages. From that point onwards you cannot disconnect the internet connection through the normal icon but have to switch off PC.
I did try to make a system restore but after the normal restore reboot, a message says that restore was not possible and that no changes were made.
Thanks for yort help
Stephen
Hi,
Just wanted to add that: -
1) after multiple re-boots I noticed that on some occasions the error did not pop up and so I could access internet normally and sound was working fine. But problem still re-appears on re-booting again.
2)when the error re-appeared I noticed that CD autorun did not work anymore and neither the automatic folder appearance when a USB memory was inserted.
Thanks for your help
Stephen
Happy New Year to the inhabitants of the Isle of Malta!
What a nuisance to be having such difficulty with your new machine.
May I presume that you are still using the dial-up connection?
Or have you restored your connection via Satellite receiver.
"WERfcf0.dir00" "appcompat.txt", "manifest.txt" <— are just the addresses and reporting text to MS.
"svchost.exe.hdmp","svchost.exe.mdmp", <— are the identified problems
Unfortunately, the filenames themselves can refer to a slew of problematic stuff, so I haven't been able to narrow down the search to anything productive for you.
Those files "could" be referring to a malware that has already infected your machine.
Please run and post a HJT Log over into the Malware Removal Forum.
Most likely it is not malware, but getting a HJT and expert analysis will be a good thing.
Additionally, please run Panda Online ActiveScan and post the results back into this thread. http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/ActiveScan.htm
Keep in mind that this "other computer problems" is not specifically a "malware removal" forum, but the scan and log will give us needed clues for your next step.
Next:
Please Run the PCPitstop Full Tests and post the TechExpress Link from your Results.
http://www.pcpitstop.com
We'll then have a more informed picture of your machine's current running, and can give more informed recommendations.
I am using dial-up connection but it's quite fast at 1MB speed. I am using the new laptop since I'm on one of the lucky boot-ups. However I have an old laptop which keeps me on the web when I'm stuck with the new one. The Satellite receiver is only used for TV reception.
Panda results:
I had just scanned the PC with Lavasoft AdAware but still Panda found some cookies. Anyway I don't think these should be a be a problem. The unwanted tool is the SmitFraud Fix which I installed after the problem started.

OK.
We'll get a preliminary from a HJT expert soon, but we have our work cut out for us on the "system side" in the meantime.
Looks like a very fine Laptop.
Can I presume that you ordinarily run it with A/C power supply?
If so, immediately remove the battery pack, and leave the battery pack out, unless your are periodically charging it up for remote use or are using your laptop on battery power.
Go ahead and clear those Cookies
Control Panel - Internet Options - Delete Cookies & Delete Files (buttons) allow Delete Offline Content.
Do you have a good quality Temp/junkfile cleaner?
Like: CleanUp! 4.51, or ATF Cleaner?
I don't know what this item is yet: C:\DOCUME~1\STEPHE~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\RtkBtMnt.exe
It relates to RealTek HD Audio, and I'm mostly sure that it is safe AND Needed………
But it it presently in a TEMP Folder, and will get Deleted during any automated CleanUp process.
THEREFORE: Please Create a New Folder like the following: C:\RealTek Moved
Then place the "file" [RtkBtMnt.exe] into that new folder to protect it.
Next Run a CleanUp program to delete Temp and Temporary Internet Files.
I like CleanUp! 4.51, but many here at TC strongly recommend ATF Cleaner. Both are good. Use only one.
You certainly have alot of applications and processes running from Boot on that machine.
It will take me a while to sort through the list. Please don't make any changes with them until we consult. Or if you do, please carefully write down what you decide to change.
Couple of questions:
What peripherals are you running that require "BlueTooth"? (anything other than "media Center remote"?)
What Logitech peripherals are your running? Probably just a logitech camera, but are you running a logitech external mouse and keyboard with your laptop?
Are you using your Laptop to view Television feed as a "media Center"?
Tell me about your use of Nokia.
Did the Symantec Suite come as a trial security suite when you purchased your Acer?
Do you plan to pay for the continue subscription or are you open to uninstalling it in favor of a free option like AVG?
I'll be getting back to you, but have some outside things I need to complete at this time.
Best Regards
Hi Dough,
I use it mostly on A/C supply unless I'm in a place where there is none or if I need to use it for a few minutes. I'll take your advice on battery removal but it would be nice to understand the advantages in doing so. Is it about lifetime or performance or something else ?
OK - Cookies cleared using Control Panel
OK - Downloaded CleanUp! 4.51
OK - Created a folder C:\RealTek Moved and placed the RtkBtMnt.exe in it.
OK - Executed CleanUp! 4.51 to delete Temp and Temporary Internet Files.
Agreed - no messing around on boot applications and processes until you tell me.
At the moment I'm using BlueTooth to periodically transfer files to my mobile phone, normally using the Nokia PC Suite program (available for free on the web)
I don't have anything attached externally to the PC and a quick scan in the device manager doesn't show any Logitech peripherals. The built in camera is called ACER orbicam. The touch pad is from Synaptics.
However a file search on Logitech popped up a folder C:\Program Files\Common Files\Logitech
This contains information on an installed Logitech Filter (LVMVFM), an installed Logitech Mouse or I-Touch, and an installed Logitech Camera (QCDRV). I'm not aware of neither of these devices but however the installation date is the same as my purchase date, i.e. when the system was setup the first time.
The only link between my laptop and the television is that I periodically program my satellite decoder with new firmware.
As described above, I have a Nokia mobile phone and my only use is installing some games (rarely) and filling it with MP3s.
Yes the Symantec Suite came as a trial security suite with the purchase. No, I don't plan to pay for continued subscription. I will probably go to AVG or some other free program.
As a status, the cookie and temp file clean up hasn't solved the problem.
Thanks for all your help,
Stephen
Regarding Battery Use and Safety Precaution:
Please read these articles and take the Precautions seriously.
No reason to panic, but every reason to be cautious, including taking out the battery while on A/C for extended periods of time to avoid the risk of over-charging and other "compatibility" issues between battery and charger unit during prolonged connection. http://www.pcpitstop.com/news/rob/rcheng0610.asp http://www.pcpitstop.com/news/rob/tony0610.asp
Hi Dough,
I think I found out what the problem is.
It's not related to the com port problem. It's a bug in the Automatic Windows Update.
For lots of useful info, follow this link…..
http:\swigartconsulting.blogs.com/tech_blender/2006/07/windows_update_.html
Hope you can use it to help others since it seems to be effecting lots of people back from July and microsoft hasn't yet issued a correct fix.
It's useful to go through most of the blog replies as the feedback from some of the guys is also helpful.
Thanks a lot for your help. You have been great.
I think you can close this thread now. If something else pops up, I will start another thread or send you a PM.
Stephen
