My computer is soooooooooooooooooooooooooo slow. My son visited MySpace, YouTube and itunes new release one night and ever since the computer acts like it is a hundred years old.

The day after he used my computer my usb ports started disappearing until none of them work at all. I really need some advice, I am afraid I may have been infected with something serious.

Below is my HiJackThis for June 9, 2007

Hi lyonbythesea,

You should know that your computer has been infected by a backdoor trojan. This program has the ability to steal passwords and other information from your system. If you use your computer for sensitive purposes such as internet banking then I recommend you take the following steps immediately:
  • Use another, uninfected computer to change all your internet passwords, especially ones with financial implications such as banks, paypal, ebay, etc. You should also change the passwords for any other site you use.
  • Call your bank(s), credit card company or any other institution which may be affected and advise them that your login/password or credit card information may have been stolen and ask what steps to take with regard to your account.
  • Consider what other private information could possibly have been taken from your computer and take appropriate steps
This infection can almost certainly be cleaned, but as the malware could be configured to run any program a remote attacker requires, it will be impossible to be 100% sure that the machine is clean, if this is unacceptable to you then you should consider reformatting the system partition and reinstalling Windows as this is the only 100% sure answer.

If you wish to reformat then please let me know in your next response, I'll now continue with instructions for cleaning.

Please print/save a copy of these instructions because we will be using Safe Mode, during which time you won't have access to the internet.

Then, open HijackThis, choose Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following lines (if present):
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
F3 - REG:win.ini: run=alojsj.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WinLoader] bive.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [WinLoader] bive.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [] bive.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Explorer] C:\WINDOWS\system32\Sys\Explorer.exe

Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt and close HijackThis.

Make hidden/system files and folders visible:
Click Start -> My Computer
Select the Tools menu, click Folder Options and select the View tab
Under the Hidden files and folders heading SELECT Show hidden files and folders
UNCHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option
Click Yes to confirm and press OK

Next, reboot your computer in Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8
A menu should appear, use the arrow keys to select Safe Mode and press enter

Use Windows Explorer to find and delete the following files (if present):
C:\WINDOWS\ALCXMNTR.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\system32\Sys\Explorer.exe <– be careful that you do not delete the legitimate file C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.exe

Now click Start-> Search and select All files and folders
Copy this line of text into the file name search box:
alojsj.exe,bive.exe
Then, under Look in: make sure Local Hard Drives is selected
Then click More advanced options, and ensure Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders and Search subfolders are all checked
Then press Search
When the search is complete, delete all files called alojsj.exe or bive.exe

Now reboot your computer normally

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS)
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  • Make sure Format->Word Wrap is unchecked
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your reply
Once complete, please post the DSS reports. You won't need a new HijackThis log this time as DSS produces one for you.
Thank you for the reply. I have several times googled both bive.exe and alojsj.exe and nothing there. Why isnt this all over the internet? big sigh…. I do use that computer for everything. It is much newer than this one and I need to rely on it for all my banking, etc. So, how hard is it to reinstall Windows?
Hi lyonbythesea,

Those filenames aren't all over the internet because they are randomly generated, however if you want some more information on the infection have a look here:
http://www.trendmicro.com/vinfo/virusencyc…2EB&VSect=T

Here is some more information to help you decide about whether to reinstall:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?

When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

How difficult it is to reinstall Windows depends on numerous factors. This guide details the steps to reinstall and can give you an idea of what is involved:
Reformatting Windows by wng_z3r0
If you have questions about this process then let me know.

The risks associated with this type of infection are very real, but they can be mitigated by changing passwords and taking other precautions dependent on the use of the computer as described above. I strongly advise you to take these precautions immediately regardless of whether you choose to clean or reformat.

With regard to cleaning, in many cases this type of infection cleans up fairly easily, once a computer has been compromised in this way it's not possible to be 100% sure that it's clean, so if you require an absolute assurance then a reformat is the best choice.

If you would like further information to make the right choice I'll be happy to help.
Due to lack of response, this thread will now be closed. If you are the topic starter and would like this topic reopened, please PM a staff member with a link to this thread and we will reopen it for you. Anyone else who needs assistance should begin a new topic.

Hi lyonbythesea,

The instructions remain the same:

Please print/save a copy of these instructions because we will be using Safe Mode, during which time you won't have access to the internet.

Then, open HijackThis, choose Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following lines (if present):
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
F3 - REG:win.ini: run=alojsj.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WinLoader] bive.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [WinLoader] bive.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [] bive.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Explorer] C:\WINDOWS\system32\Sys\Explorer.exe

Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt and close HijackThis.

Make hidden/system files and folders visible:
Click Start -> My Computer

C:\WINDOWS\system32\Sys\Explorer.exe <– be careful that you do not delete the legitimate file C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.exe

Should I have found this file to delete? I could not find it.
Hi lyonbythesea, If one or more of the files aren't present that's OK don't worry about it, but if one or more is present and you can't delete it please let me know about it.
Hi,

Try this please:

Next click Start->Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK
Ensure the boxes for Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
Press OK and Yes to confirm

Reboot your computer and then run DSS once more.
If it gets stuck again, note down what DSS says it's doing when it gets stuck and then close it and post a new HijackThis log instead.
Phew … That worked and below are the main and extra information that was created …

Hi lyonbythesea,

There is one HijackThis fix remaining:

Then, open HijackThis, choose Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following line:
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [WinLoader] bive.exe

Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt and close HijackThis.

It looks like you have a custom hosts file, are you aware of this and was this installed on purpose?

The DSS report shows that your Zone Alarm antivirus is outdated, please update it immediately and check that it is set to automatically update.

Next, some uninstalls to consider:

You have Viewpoint Media Player installed on your system. This program is not malware but it is foistware in that it is usually installed without the user's knowledge or approval, and for this reason I recommend you remove it. If you actually use this program, I recommend you try using safe and free alternatives such as VLC Player or Media Player Classic.
To remove, open Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs find Viewpoint Media Player and select Remove

You have uTorrent, a P2P file sharing program installed on your computer. This program does not come bundled with malware as some similar programs do, but P2P file sharing networks are one of the biggest sources of malware we see. Anything downloaded from them cannot be trusted to be clean, because even if the file appears to be what it claims to be, it can have malware embedded in it.
I recommend you remove it, but of course the choice is yours.
You can remove uTorrent via Add/Remove Programs.

You have a program called Messenger Plus! Live installed. When installing it offers a choice either to Install the sponsor program or I refuse to give my support, don't install the sponsor. The sponsor program is malware so if you installed it we need to remove it. Even if you didn't install the sponsor program I recommend you remove this program anyway as the developer is spreading malware for profit - read more information about this here.
To remove the program open Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs, find Messenger Plus! Live and select Remove

Your Java is outdated and is now a security risk
Go to Start » Control Panel » Add/Remove Programs
Find and remove Java™ SE Runtime Environment 6
Download and install the newest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE), from here (version 6 update 2):
http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp

Next we'll do some scans:

Download Dr.WEB CureIt to your desktop from here:
ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/cureit.exe
  • Double-click cureit.exe to start the program.
  • Press Start and then OK to start the Express scan
  • The Express scan takes just a few moments to finish, if something is found, click Yes to cure it
  • Once the short scan has finished, Click Options->Change settings
  • Choose the Scan tab and remove the check mark from Heuristic analysis
  • Choose the Actions tab and next to Infected objects select Move, then press OK to close the settings box.
  • Select all hard drives to be scanned by clicking on them - choose all drives - a red dot confirms they will be scanned
  • Click the green arrow on the right to start the scan
  • Click Yes to all if it asks if you want to move a file
  • Click File-> Save report list and save the report to your desktop
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit and reboot your computer (this is important as files may be moved/deleted during reboot)
Then please download F-Secure Blacklight
  • Click I ACCEPT and download the graphical user interface version to your Desktop
  • Double click the file to run it, choose I accept the agreement then press Scan
  • It will create the fsbl-xxxxxxx.log on your desktop.
  • The log will have a list of all items found.
  • Do not choose to rename any yet! I want to see the log first because legitimate items can also be present.
  • Exit Blacklight and post the contents of the log in your next reply.
Once complete, please post the Dr Web log, the Blacklight log and a new HijackThis log.
