Hi everyone,

I am stuck in a classic startpage hijack problem with IE… except that I am redirected to my computer manufacturer's home page!
My copies of Windows and Norton Internet Security are up to date, and I run regular checks with AdAware / Spybot S&D. My last attempt to do a clean up with regedit ended in total failure, as I could not run IE anymore, so had to go back to the last restore point (great feature btw).

Could someone please help me with this log?

The rest of your log looks fine

Are you still being redirected??
Ken545,

When I try to remove the three R0 entries, they appear again in HJT. And I am still redirected to the same annoying page… Is there something I missed?

Outside of those three entries, your log looks fine.

Try removing them in Safemode.

Tutorial if you need it How to boot into Safemode

Explain to me exactly where your being redirected. When you type in say www.ebay.com, where is it taking you. This may be software that is set by your ISP. Do a search and post the link to the redirect in your next reply.

Run this tool , it will make sure all your hosts files and taking you to where there supposed to take you

Download Hoster
  • Unzip Hoster to your desktop
  • Open up the Hoster program.
  • Make sure that the "Make Hosts Writable?" button in the upper right corner is enabled.
  • Click Create Back Up
  • Then click on Restore Microsoft's Host Files
  • Close the Hoster program
ken545,

Thanks so much for your help! I am ending the year with a cleaned up computer. It seems the safemode repair finally worked.

Honestly, I could not use Hoster. When toggling to "writable", all menu options became gray and I was unable to backup/restore…

Fyi, I was redirected to "http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/default.aspx?c=fr&l=fr&s=gen" as my start page. Obviously, without typing anything.

My new HJT log still includes reference to the problematic Dell start page. Does it matter?

Fix these and you should be good to go

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.euro.dell.com/countries/fr/fra/gen/default.htm
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UserFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -u

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

You can remove any programs I had you install

Log looks good :D

You need to create a new Clean restore point.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

If you dont have any programs like these, I would recommend that you get them.
Spywareblaster,
Spywareguard.

Also get a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Safe Surfing. :D

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
