Hi, your help would be appreciated! My IE start page has been hijacked. It opens with the following in the address bar:
res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\shdocpa.dll/security.htm#subID=PRFV;6784
and all attempts to remove it have so far failed. I have run SpyBot and Ad Aware but neither detects anything. Log from HijackThis follows:

Regards,

sidb
Interesting (?)(!) to note that the page that opens when I launch the browser has changed itself today, and the address bar now shows:- res://shdocpa.dll/blank.htm I still can't reclaim the "home" page of my choice using Tools/Internet options/Home page, though. It just resets itself to the above (and yesterday, to res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\shdocpa.dll/security.htm#subID=PRFV;6784). I guess the shdocpa.dll is a rogue in this? I tried to delete it before posting yesterday, but it just keeps coming back. sidb
Hello sidb and welcome to TomCoyote. :wavey:

Step 1
Open HijackThis, run a scan, then check the following:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\shdocpa.dll/security.htm#subID=PRFV;6784
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://shdocpa.dll/asst.htm
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [FastStart] C:\WINDOWS\system32\svcnut32.exe home

With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.

Step 2
Please set your computer to show all files.
  • Double-click My Computer.
  • Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
  • Click the View tab.
  • Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
  • Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
  • Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
You will need to reverse this process when all steps are done.

Step 3
Please delete the following files:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\svcnut32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\shdocpa.dll

If you have any problem deleting these items, reboot into Safe Mode (tap F8 during bootup, use arrow keys to select Safe Mode, then hit 'enter') and try again.

Step 4
Reboot normally and scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread.
Please let us know of any complications you had and how the computer is behaving.

(Love your dog.)
Were you able to find and delete the two files from the previous fix?

Step 1
Open HijackThis, run a scan, then check the following:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = res://shdocpa.dll/blank.htm
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://shdocpa.dll/asst.htm

With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.

Step 2
Reboot normally and scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread.

Hi,

Yes - I believe that I have now deleted all of the files. Also, for your information, I have run Spybot Search & Destroy and it has picked up and removed something called Trek Blue Error Nuker.

Computer appears to be behaving normally.

Thanks for your help!
Your new log appears clean. :)

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. On the System Restore tab, put a check mark in the 'Turn Off System Restore' check box.
3. Click OK, and then click Yes.
4. Restart the computer.
5. Repeat steps 1 - 2, this time clearing the box beside 'Turn Off System Restore', click 'OK'.

I suggest that you get these programs to help keep the computer clean:

Spyware Blaster - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer. Spyware Blaster runs silently in the background.
SpywareGuard - Real-time protection from spyware installation attempts
ie-spyad - Puts over 8,000 bad URLs into your restricted sites for Internet Explorer.
Google Toolbar - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
Firefox - 'Safer' alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.
ZoneAlarm - Free firewall program if you currently are not using one.

Update these regularly.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-virus updated.
Your welcome. Glad the computer is working well again.
