Hello,

Yesterday my husband's computer was hijacked. The home page of IE has reverted to about:blank and constantly arrives at some sort of informational database page. I have tried all of the usual remedies: Spybot, Adaware, BHODaemon, McAfee. Nothing is working. The computer is experiencing a series of continuous new registry entries and newly created .dll's which appear to be randomly named. His computer is running Windows XP Pro. I have temporarily disables 'restore'.

Although somewhat computer literate, I am far from knowledgable. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

Please read through the instructions before you start (you may want to print this out).

Please note that everytime you reboot your computer there's a good chance that the files names may have changed.
The link below will help ID them:
http://www.pchell.com/support/onlythebest.shtml

Please download and unzip
AboutBuster to a folder. Inside the folder is a readme file that has instructions on the use of the program.
AboutBuster MUST be updated before you use it.
Start AboutBuster, click the update button, check for update, drag the box to the side and hit download updates, close the box . Don't run it yet.
Current reference list # is 15
Sometimes AboutBuster works better in safe mode, try it.

You may also find the TheKillBox helpful for deleting and ending task on files to be deleted.
To end task on a file that's running use the drop down arrow in the right lower corner of the program and the button to the left of it.

1. Please download and install AD-Aware SE.
Check Here on how setup and use it - please make sure you update it first.

2. Go to Start->Run and type "Services.msc" (without quotes) then hit Ok
Scroll down and find the service called "Network Security Service" (it may also be listed as Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper or Workstation NetLogon Service)

When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok and close any open windows. If you don´t find this service listed go ahead with the next steps.

3. Open Windows Explorer & Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked.
Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and untick "hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
Click "Apply" then "OK"

For anyone using Windows XP, 'Search' will not automatically show hidden files even if your folder options settings are set to do that. Do this so you can see hidden files and folders - click here http://www.davehigham.zen.co.uk/downloads/xphidden.zip to download xphidden.zip. Extract xphidden.reg from the zip file and save it to the desktop. When done, double-click the xphidden.reg and when asked to merge say yes.

4. Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete once => Click Task Manager => Click the Processes tab => Double-click the Image Name column header to alphabetically sort the processes => Scroll through the list and look for:

ipsj32.exe
d3ux32.exe
r?ndll32.exe

If you find the files, click on them, and then click End Process => Exit the Task Manager.

5. CLOSE ALL WINDOWS AND BROWSERS Scan with Hijack This and put checks next to all the following, then click "Fix Checked"

Reboot to normal mode and post a fresh HJT log as well as the about:buster log.
Hello SiggyX, Thank you for your prompt response. That's quite a process - and I'm glad that it exists… B) It may take me a while to get through it all but I will follow your directions religiously. My husband thanks you as well - for publicly confirmng that he's not the first to get bitten by this nuisance. As soon as I've completed the process I'll post my results. Thank you again, tessc
Hello again SiggyX, I have gotten as far as part 2 of step #2: When I double clicked on "Network Security Service" I got the following error message: "Configuation Manager: A required entry in the registry is missing or an attempt to write to the registry failed. The system cannot find the file specified." Please advise how to proceed next. thank you in advance, tessc
Yes, I am logged in as admin and am continuing with your process. Barring any unpleasant surprises, I should be able to post both the new HJT log and about:buster log later this evening. Your instructions were very clear and easy to follow . :D tessc

Looks good :D  I would suggest at this point that you disable and then enable system restore as there could be some nasties hiding in there.

This hijacker seems to sometimes change IE's security settings, so check under Tools, Internet Options, Security Tab that your settings for the zones are where you want them.

If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. In my signature below is also a tutorial on how to harden IE, a good read and very helpful to stop these things in the future. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on.

Safe Surfing. :D
Thank you, again, Siggyx. I had disabled sys restore at the beginning of all of this and will now re-enable it. I'll certainly investigate the tools you have suggested. This was not how I had planned to spend my weekend  Thank you and hope that the remnants of Frances didn't wash away your end of ON. Regards, tessc
Hi Siggyx, I read your page on securing IE and have a question regarding trusted sites: Right now, EVERY site I go to is in the trusted zone, even though I have added no sites to that zone. Can I assume this is a resudual from the hijacking? And if so, how do I change IE back to having the Internet zone as the default? Thanks in advance, tessc
You should be able to do it this way. Click on tools>internet options>Security tab Then for each click on the default level. Then you can read the tutorial on how to harden IE and do custom levels.
I did as you suggested but it didn't work. The problem is with IE on the Admin side; the computer was set up with an alternate user to prevent the kind of problems I had this past weekend :wtf: IE on the alternate user side is free of problems and displaying sites in correct zones. I do not understand how the IE's are related but they seem to function independantly. Any advice? Thanks in advance, tessc
Remember step 2 that you could not do. Well try that now in the admin account. I would recommend that all users on the computer be set up as user and admin account should not be used for surfing the net. Let me do some research and see what I can come up with.
Interestingly, 'Network Security Service' which gave me the error messages when I dbl-clicked, is no longer in the list. I DID find 'Remote Procedure Call (RPC)' & 'Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Locator'. Status of the first (RPC) is 'started', Startup type is 'automatic'. Dbl-clicking gives me a tabbed box but the 'stop' box is not enabled. I'm beginning to understand what the rabbit hole felt like to Alice… :weee: tessc
