IE running very slowly - Log posted!

Hello kind people who I hope will help me!

My IE has been running EXTREMELY slow as of late. I have Trend Micro PC-cillin in the latest version running, I've used SpyBot, and I've used Ad-Aware and have found nothing aside from cookies. I've re-booted after running these programs, and here is my HijackThis log:

Welcome to Tom Coyote . Sorry about the delay in responding but we are as most times just overwhelmed with logs.

Your log is not looking to bad, but there are a few things we need to fix.

Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

  • Your Java is out of date and leaving your system vulnerable.
  • Go to your Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall any previous versions of Java (J2SE Runtime Environment)
  • It should have an icon next to it:
    [external image: Posted Image]
    Select it and click Remove.
  • Reboot your system.
  • Then go to the Sun Java website and download and install the update.
  • Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 10 <–This is what you need to download and install.
  • If you chose the online installation, it will prompt you to run the program.
  • If you chose the offline installation, you will be prompted to save the file and you can run it from wherever you saved it.
  • Then after install you can verify your installation here Sun Java Verify
I like to to do the offline installation and save the setup file in case I may need it in the future



Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
  • This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
Your system may start up slower after running ATF Cleaner, this is expected but will be back to normal after the first or second boot up




Run this free online virus scanner from Panda, it may pick up some bad entires that are not showing up on your HJT log. It's important that I see the log so copy and paste it into your next reply.
Panda ActiveScan <—-Accept default settings



There are infections being written to evade Hijackthis, so go to where you have HJT installed and right click on the HJT Icon ( Looks like a stick of red dynamite with a plunger ) and rename it to Scanner.exe, run the program to Scan and Save a Log File and post a new log into this thread.


So let me see the Panda report and a new HJT log please.

Ken,

Thank you SO much for your help! I did everything that you asked…except that when I went to run Panda, it completed its scan (and found 3 viruses, all cleaned, 59 spyware…most of them just cookies, and 1 "suspicious file"). HOWEVER, it froze immediately after completing and wouldn't let me save the log. And it took TWO HOURS to do the scan, so I wasn't about to do it again. *sighs*

But here is my new HJT log, completed when I renamed the program to "scanner."

Panda is funny, some posters run it in a half hour and some never complete it. Your log still looks fine, lets run AVG Anti Spyware, follow the instructions closely, I need to see the report. If all looks ok, this may be a software or hardware issue and if it is I can direct you to some excellent support sites that deal with this sort of thing, but before we do we have to make sure that your not infected with anything.



Download and install the 30 day trial of AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 to your desktop.
  • Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
  • Once the setup is complete you will need run AVG and update the definition files.
  • On the main screen select the icon Update then select the Update now link.
  • Next select the Start Update button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the Scanner icon at the top of the screen, then select the Settings tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on Recommended actions and then select Quarantine <– Dont forget this
  • Under Reports
  • Select Automatically generate report after every scan
  • Un-Select Only if threats were found
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 <– Do not run the scan yet.
Boot your computer into Safemode
  • Go to Start> Shut Off your Computer> Restart
  • As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly.
  • This will bring up a menu.
  • Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to SAFEMODE
  • Then press the Enter on your Keyboard

IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while ewido is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning process:
  • Launch AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the Scanner icon at the top and then the Scan tab then click on Complete System Scan.
  • AVG will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
  • Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select Apply all actions
  • Next select the Reports icon at the top.
  • Select the Save report as button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system
  • make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5

Look in your Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel for WinantivirusPro and if its present, try to uninstall it, its a rouge anti virus program. If its not present, look in C:\Program Files and let me know if its present.

Hi again Ken!

I checked my Add/Remove programs list for WinAntiVirusPro and did not find it there, and it was also not listed in my Program Files. Before I give you my new HJT log, I've been pondering something. These issues started occuring mainly after I updated from PC-Cillin Internet Security Suite 2006 to the 2007 version. The PcScnSrv.exe file sometimes takes up 100% of my CPU…and I think it is often what causes my hang-ups (though not all the time). Could this be part of the issue? I can un-install PC-Cillin 2007 and then attempt to find my 2006 version if that's the case.

Hi Again,

Wow, you hit the nail on the head with this one, :thumbup: it appears that the 2007 version is causing performance problems. The work around seems to be to uninstall the 2007 version and reinstall the 2006 version using the product key for 2007. Maybe you could assist me on this forum :D

Let me tell you about security suites, there all resourse hogs, I would not allow one on my system. You are better off with just a stand alone AV and a stand alone firewall plus some anti spyware thrown in. My self, I just use Norton AV and the free ZoneAlarm Firewall. I am including two free AV programs if you want to go that route.

  • IE-Spyad
    IE-Spyad places over 4000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • Firefox 2.0 It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.
  • Zone Alarm Here is a free Firewall from Zone Labs, I wouldn't access the internet without it.
