About ten days ago our IE started to freeze up--sometimes immediately and on other occasions shortly after start up. We have run ad aware, spybot, cclean and the Mcafee that we have on the system. Nothing of substance has turned up and we still have the problem. Any help available in response to the hijack this log posted below? Thanks in anticipation!

Hello and welcome to TomCoyote. Is it Edward? If you still need help I will see what I can do. I see Verizon and aol in the log, which is your ISP. If it's Verizon, can I clean out the aol ? I will be asking you to use tools again that you have, after using a link to check how they are configured and making sure we have the newest version. Please follow the instructions in the posted order.

1) You are running HJT from a .zip file in a Temporary Directory. Before we can use HJT you must move it to a permanent folder, I suggest: C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe. If you need more instruction use this link: http://russelltexas....tehjtfolder.htm It is very important, since we will use HJT, that you do this before proceeding.

2) Download, update, configure and run these two programs: http://tomcoyote.org/aawsb.php
The newest version of Ad-aware is 1.06 and Spybot 1.04. Even if you have these programs, use the link to get the newest version, update and configure them as in the link. Run Spybot first, reboot then run Ad-aware. Both programs back up what they remove so delete anything the programs say should be removed.

3) Ewido scan:
Please download Ewido Security Suite it is a trial version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Then click on Start Update
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.
Ewido manual updates

Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.**
    • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
    • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
    • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
    • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop.
Now close ewido security suite.
**(Ewido for example has been flagging parts of AVG Anti-Virus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk")

Microsoft AntiSpyware may stop the HJT fix, be offline first, then turn it off. Once finished with HJT turn it back on before returning online.

4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

5) Make sure CCleaner is version 1.25.201, use these instructions: http://www.ccleaner.com/help/tour1.asp Run CCleaner, when you run the registry cleaner (Issues) you will be prompted to backup before you can remove stuff, make sure you do. Then restart the computer and post a new HJT log and the Ewido scan results in this same thread along with any feedback you have. Let me know how your computer is running now.

Thanks...pskelley

Yes, it is Edward. Neither AOL nor Verizon is currently our ISP.

The only problem we have seen has been with IE freezing. It did again when I just tried it. Any thoughts?

Thanks

OK Sir, let's see how the tools did, since you indicated you no longer use aol or Verizon, I will schedule the removal of those unless you prefer otherwise. We removed a lot of junk, I will see what we can try to improve the IE situation. I will do my best to help, but my forte' is malware removal. I may have to direct you elsewhere for help, let's see what happens, thanks.

ewido security suite - Scan report Created on: 10:30:00 PM, 11/7/2005
Edward, I suggest you use this log to see where these cookies are hiding, there are mostly in Firefox. As in IE you can disallow cookies in Firebox then override to allow the ones you need for vip sites, passwords, etc. If you need help doing this, let me know. You also are storing junk here: C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\YPSR\Quarantine\ I do not use the program myself, but at the very least I would purge this quarantine area on a regular basis.

Before I look at the log, I want to address this question a little:

The only problem we have seen has been with IE freezing. It did again when I just tried it. Any thoughts

If I had a quick answer to this, I would be a very rich man. There are so many things that can cause this. Just to make my point I will use your words "IE freezing" and Google them for you: http://www.google.co...G=Google Search As you can see Google returns 2,760,000 possible solutions to this issue. Finding the right solution is called troubleshooting, but it is often like looking for the proverbial needle in a haystack. I started as a troubleshooter but soon learned I had a better chance of locating and removing malware. We have done a fair job of cleaning, once we see what is left that should go, we will look at some of the basic troubleshooting methods for IE issues.

Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 10:52:02 PM, on 11/7/2005

C:\PROGRAM FILES~1\COMMON~1\AOL\ACS\AOLacsd.exe <<< I would uninstall this in Add Remove programs if you no longer use it.
O23 - Service: AOL Connectivity Service (AOL ACS) - America Online, Inc. - C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\AOL\ACS\AOLacsd.exe
The above Service needs to be turned off, intructions here: http://is-it-true.or...s/utips76.shtml HJT can delete the service permanently if you wish. Instructions are available upon request.

C:\Program Files\ewido\security suite\ewidoctrl.exe <<< keep in mind this program is using some resources and once the trial period is over, you should make sure it is not running or remove it as you wish. The scanner and free updates are yours to keep if you wish. Disable the service also.

C:\PROGRAM FILES~1\VERIZO~1\SMARTB~1\MotiveSB.exe <<< same as aol above.
C:\Program Files\Verizon Online\bin\mpbtn.exe

The changes with HJT concerning aol and Verizon are with the understanding you are removing what is posted above.

Microsoft AntiSpyware may block the HJT fix, I suggest you be online and shut it down until you are done. Activate MAS before returning online.

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapp...//www.yahoo.com
adware
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {4E7BD74F-2B8D-469E-D0FC-E57AF4D5FA7D} - (no file)
dead link
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Window Title = Microsoft Internet Explorer provided by Verizon Online
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Motive SmartBridge] C:\PROGRA~1\VERIZO~1\SMARTB~1\MotiveSB.exe
please see this >>> http://castlecops.co...plist-5774.html
O4 - Global Startup: America Online 9.0 Tray Icon.lnk = C:\Program Files\America Online 9.0\aoltray.exe
O4 - Global Startup: Verizon Online Support Center.lnk = C:\Program Files\Verizon Online\bin\matcli.exe

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. If you removed them above, make sure they are gone here:

C:\PROGRAM FILES~1\VERIZO~1 >>> folder

C:\Program Files\Verizon Online\ >>> folder

C:\PROGRAM FILES~1\COMMON~1\AOL\ >>> folder

If you can't find them, uninstall may have done the job, they also may be hiding, use the link to find out.
http://www.xtra.co.n...1916458,00.html

I suggest a cleaning of Prefetch, see this: http://www.windowsne...refetch-XP.html (do not delete the folder)

I just want to mention if you use Adobe, there is a new version available free, 7.0.

I have yet to see any real nasties, but you may have removed something before I saw a log. Often they will get backed up in System Restore. The information in the link will show you how to get new SR files for safety.
http://service1.syma...src=sec_doc_nam

That's a lot to do and I doubt anything there will fix the IE issue, but you never know. I will suggest you start by running your System File Checker. If there are any corrupted or missing system files, and you have the backups on the computer SFC will replace them. This often fixes IE issues. If you are asked for the CD it means they are not stored on the computer. SFC will do it's job and close, so wait until you try IE to see if it helps. Once you get to this point, I will need to know what changes you made around the time this started? Any Windows Updates, SP2? new programs, any clue you can provide, and any information you think may help, especially any error messages "word for word"

Click Start>Run, type in sfc /scannow, hit Enter.
Note: there is a space between sfc and /scannow
This should replace any corrupted/missing system files and will hopefully fix things. You may need your XP disc in your CD drive for this.

Thanks...pskelley

Thanks for the response. Before we proceed with the next round of "search and destroy", I wanted to raise an issue that started with our McAfee software at about the same time that the IE problem began. Basically, we are being told to reinstall the Privacy Service. We are looking for the disk to do so (its a long story) but I have had problems with McAfee on other computers and am wondering if we should switch to another product.

I won't be able to call that for you, I can however, tell you this. I use McAfee and have for years, on several computers (same price for all, that's why I use it) but I run VSO only. You have a load of stuff onboard and I have no idea what all of it is. Just a with NAV, I wonder at times how effective a hugh resource waster like that is. I run the basic VSO and Zone Alarm (free) on my Dell with SP1 and on my Dell with SP2 I run VSO with the SP2 firewall. I am not a big believer in "more is better", I use what is tried and true (mostly all freeware) and avoid all the hugh resource wasters. I go places working these logs to check stuff others would not, and I do pick up stuff once in a while, but I quickly remove it and carry on. When I do have to install a freeware AV product (and I put it on my sisters new Dell) I choose AVG by Grisoft. In your case, were I in your shoes, I would have a AV program, use the SP2 firewall and one or two good freeware spyware products, along with much care when dealing with online issues and email. I hope this information helps. Thanks...Phil

I wish that I could say that all was well but...... Yesterday a McAfee message popped up that it had found a Prockill-DF trojan on our computer. It recommended that we searched fully which we did and it found 5-6 more. These were deleted except for two that could not be located. I then ran all of the other searches that you had recommended. Any thoughts as to what is going on? We still do not use IE because it freezes. (My wife wants to delete it, if that is actually possible).

Nope, but a lot can happen in a week. Here is what Google says: Your search - Prockill-DF trojan - did not match any documents. Update and run ewido and post the scan results along with a new HJT log and I will take another look. I Would like for you to review all we have covered so far to be sure you tried what I suggested. To my knowledge IE is part of your Operating System, you might not use it but I don't believe you can remove it. Thanks
