Hi, I need help? I removed Norton Through add remove option on Windows XP , ran the Norton Removal Tool available at Norton's website, ran the CCleaner, tried removing Norton's registries through RegSeeker 1.52. All went well until i discovered some registry keys on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE just dont delete! Their is an erruer 123 notice coming up everytime.I tried removing the keys manually but it was the same error message coming up again! Ok, i tried going in safe mode to see if it works this time.Nope! Same thing over and over again! Can someone tell me what's going on????? :rant2:
I've found that the best way to remove the norton entries is to do it manually. Try doing the following:
  • Go to Start|Run and type regedit
  • Highlight the "My Computer" root item
  • Go to File|Export and save a backup copy of the registry
  • Press Ctrl-F, type norton, and press Enter
  • When an entry is found, delete it and press F3
  • Repeat step 5 until no more entries are found
  • Highlight the "My Computer" root item again
  • Repeat steps 4-6 with symantec as the search term
  • Close the registry editor
If there are any problems, just double-click the backup copy you saved earlier to restore the registry.

Let me know if this helps,

Ax
It still doesnt delete, here are the registry keys for Norton and Symantec, 1) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SYSTEM\CONTROL Set002\ENUM\HID\Vid_0461&pid_4d15\6&29e04f61&0&0000\*norton* 2) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SYSTEM\CONTROL Set002 \ENUM\PCI\VEN_1180&DEV 0843&SUBSYS_01BD1028&REV_01\4&2fe911e8&0&0AFO\*norton* 3)HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SYSTEM\CONTROL Set002\ENUM\PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_27A6&SUBSYS_01BD1028&REV_03\3&61aaa01&0&11\*norton* 4)HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SYSTEM\CONTROL Set002\ENUM\PCI\VEN_1180&DEV_0852&SUBSYS_01BD1028&REV_05\4&2fe911e8&0&0CFO\*norton* 5)HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SYSTEM\CONTROL Set002\ENUM\PCI\VEN_1180&DEV_0592&SUBSYS_01BD1028&REV_OA\4&2fe911c8&0&0BFO\*norton* ……..and another 4 entries like this! I try to delete them and an erreur N/S 123 displays preventing their deletion! In Symantec, 1)HKEY_CURRENT_USER software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\traynotify n Files\Symantec Shared\ccApp.exe 2)HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SYSTEM\CONTROL Set002\ENUM\HID\Vid_0461&Pid_4d15\6&29e04f61&0&0000\symantec 3)HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE ENUM\PCI\VEN_1180&DEV_0852&SUBSYS_01BD1028&REV_05\4&2fe911e8&0&0CF0\symantec 4)HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE ENUM\PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_27A2&SUBSYS_01BD1028&REV_03\3&61aaa01&0&0&10\symantec …..and another 2 entries just like these and they keep reappearing after i delete them again and again! The question is, what are these entries and why are they still there on my computer and why aren't they going!
How are you creating this string? Copy and paste? I ask because there seems to be some "spaces" added and some "\" missing. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE ENUM\PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_27A2&SUBSYS_01BD1028&REV_03\3&61aaa01&0&0&10\symantec Question: Do you now have, or ever had Norton Ghost (a software that helps make disk backups)
Hi dough, I had Norton Internet Security 2006 trial version for three months that came with my dell laptop! Now i know this for sure that Norton being a bulkier program makes the system run much slower than other security softwares and not necessarily any better so i uninstalled it. After running the NRT and CCleaner i searched my laptop for any residue of Norton registry keys by typing *norton*/ *symantec* in the searh field of RegSeeker 1.52. This is how i procured my list! I don't think a trial version would install Norton Ghost in it, would it dough? The big question is do i need to get rid of these keys and how without adversely damaging my laptop!??
Registry entries referring to norton do not slow your machine down all by themselves. It is generally the Norton program processes themselves that consume large amounts of system resources, that slow down a machine. However, if a Registry entry calls for a Norton process that is no longer installed, and thereby produces a "nuisance warning" (This program cannot be found), the user may want to remove the registry item to stop the nuisance warning. If you are not getting any such nuisance warnings, and your machine is functioning well otherwise, then you will probably have no problem leaving those Registry items in place. Run your machine for a while. Then let us know how it is functioning. We can attempt to help with further steps if necessary. Best Regards

It still doesnt delete, here are the registry keys for Norton and Symantec,

Did you try deleting them through regedit, rather than through RegSeeker?
Hi Ax238 tried to remove it with regedit and RegSeeker both. It's the same thing over and over again Erreur N/S 123 pop up saying these cant be removed! btw i tried running NRT a couple of times on my machine hoping against hope that maybe Norton can remove Norton but it's futile! I reckon that these registry keys are guarded by some stealth Norton program that is still running in there and maybe these registry keys are some sort of identification and relay tag that is to identify my system to norton and maybe there is a remote possibility that it could still be collecting information about my system and transmitting the same! I dont want to sound paranoid but i'm now begining to understand what Norton meant by collecting info in the EULA agreement! :(
You need to get hold of a program called "SymNRT.exe" it will delete all of the traces of norton that can do any harm, or impair your system. Deleting all traces from the PC is a bit OCD if you ask me. file name: SymNRT.exe File size: 677 KB (693,904 bytes) Size on Disk : 680 KB (696,320 bytes) Version : 2007.1.0.7
Hi Jason HM, Thanks I have already run SymNRT several times but the keys are still there. I'm going to try running it again with the window defenders realtime protection disabled and see if it can remove it or else i will try manually deleting those keys! I know they are dead Norton keys but now are bug me!
 I know how that gets, oohhh yes, you've probably done it all ready but do an " *.* " (filename) and (containg words) " norton " or " Symantec " search, then delete everything that turns up. take care on some of them could kill stuff other than norton. regards, Jason
