We've been having multiple problems with our entire system lately. We thought we had removed all the spyware and worms that had suddenly innundated our system, but apparently that is not the case. 1. We have been unable to update Norton Internet Security/Antivirus. One of the "fixes" we were told was to uninstall and reinstall the software, but for some reason we have NOT been able to uninstall it. When using the "add remove program" to uninstall we receive the error: "A Norton Internet Security account with supervisor access must be logged in to uninstall this product. If Norton Internet Security is not running, click the Start menu, select Norton Internet Security, and log in. Setup will now exit" but we can not find anywhere in Norton Internet Security to log in. We've also tried the uninstall the "long" way but can't seem to get access to nis2004xp_reg_removal.reg to begin the download. 2. We have been unable to download the Windows XP updates that will help us to protect against further viruses/worms. 3. We have been unable to access any sort of secure sites (paypal, etc.) and this also includes the Symantec automated support assistant. I'm not sure what has caused this but I'm suspecting that somehow we're missing a java file that we need to access these sites. Actually, THIS fix is probably the most important since accessing the Symantec automated support assistant may help to fix 80% of our problem.
Greetings and welcome to TomCoyote.org!

There are certain infections that can prevent you from visit antivirus update sites. But they are "curable".

I can't promise miracles, but I'll do my best to help rid your system of infections. :)

Important: Create a folder on the C: drive called C:\HJT.
You can do this by going to My Computer (Windows key+e) then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it HJT.
Download HijackThis into this folder.

If required a tutorial is here = Hijackthis Folder Tutorial

Links to Hijack This! v 1.98.2:

http://tools.radiosplace.com/HijackThis.exe

http://tools.zerosrealm.com/hjt.zip
http://spywarewarrior.com/files/hijackthis.zip
http://spywarewarrior.com/files/HijackThis.exe

Run it from that folder.

Click "Scan".

DO NOT "FIX" ANYTHING WITH IT YET!!!
FIXING THE WRONG THING COULD RENDER YOUR SYSTEM INOPERABLE!!!

Click "Save log".

Reply to this thread, and "copy/paste" the ENTIRE CONTENTS of the log file into this thread. :)
We used HijackThis in "fixing" our system the first time (along with CWShredder and AdAware) but weren't able to download the Windows "fixes" in order to prevent reinfection so it's likely we're right back where we started (especially since the About:Blank site started coming up again this morning). Sigh…….
Anyway……here you go

Let's see if you have a hidden hijacker. Do this for me.

1. Please download DllCompare
( The Screenshot will show you how the program will look when it starts.)

2. Start the Program with its default settings and put a check mark in the include subdirectories. Click the Run Locate.com and wait until the scan says complete.

3. Click the Compare button to start the next process.

4. Files in the upper portion have been verified to "exist", Files in the bottom section were not able to be accessed. Very few files should be listed in the bottom section when the Compare scan is complete.

5. Click on each of the listed entries in the lower section to select them. Right-click on the file and use the Option Rescan screenshot.

6. This will cause Windows Find to see if the file does exist, and then it will be removed from the list (to reduce the number of identified files) screenshot

7. Click the Make a Log of what was found button, and post the log here in this thread using Add Reply to receive further instructions.

Looks like you are infected. Click here to download FindnFix.exe (2K/XP only!) by freeatlast. Double-click on the FINDnFIX.exe and it will install a folder called FINDnFIX on your system. Go to that folder and double-click on !LOG!.bat. The program takes a few minutes to collect the necessary information. When done post the contents of Log.txt in this thread.

Yes it was.

Completely disable any antivirus software you have running from this point on until we have finished.

In the keys1 folder, double click on FIX.bat. You will get an alert of about 15 seconds before reboot - allow it to reboot. On restart, open Explorer and navigate to C:\Windows\System32 folder, find the CTLHLOM.DLL file (it should be visible now). Highlight the file and using top menu, click Edit>Move to folder…

Select C:\Findnfix\junkxxx as destination. Move the file.

Open the FINDnFIX folder again and double-click on RESTORE.bat. When it is finished, in FINDnFIX folder, there will be a file called Log2.txt - post it's contents in your next reply.

Nearly there, open the FINDnFIX folder again and open the Files2 folder. Double-click on the ZIPZAP.bat. It will quickly clean the rest and will make a copy of the bad file(s) in the same folder (junkxxx.zip) and open your email client with instructions. Simply drag and drop the junkxxx.zip file from the folder into the mail message and submit to the specified addresses.

Please be sure to include a link to this thread in the body of your email. Reboot when done, then delete the entire FINDnFIX folder. Could you click here to download CWShredder by Merijn Bellekom and run it, hit 'fix' as opposed to 'scan only'. If you already have CWShredder, click 'Check for update' and make sure you are running version 1.59.1 Reboot when done. Rescan with HJT and post a new log in your next reply.

The computer itself seems to be running better in general but there is still no access to secure sites. I also still can't use the "Live Update" on Norton Internet Security and haven't attempted the "long" way of uninstalling Norton Internet Security (so we can REinstall it) but we're still getting the error of "A Norton Internet Security account with supervisor access must be logged in to uninstall this product. If Norton Internet Security is not running, click the Start mentu, select norton Internet Security, and log in. Setup will now exit" (even tho' we ARE already logged in) when I attempt to uninstall using Add or Remove Programs under the Control Panel. Under the system status of NIS Norton Antivirus still needs "attention" and we can't get the Security turned "On". We also still can't seem to download the windows updates (Still get error number: 0x80072EFD……and I haven't been able to find out what that error is). Is there some sort of Javascript file (or other file) that I'm suddenly missing that could cause this?
Probably caused by completely disabling ActiveX. In IE, go to Tools>Internet Options>Security>Custom Level and set up like this: Download signed ActiveX controls - prompt Download unsigned ActiveX controls - disable Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe - disable Run ActiveXcontrols and plug-ins - enable Script ActiveXcontrols marked safe for scripting - enable Apply and OK your way out. Also check that your firewall hasn't disabled them. Let me know.
