I seem to have a search hijack on my system. I have run spybot S&D, Ad-Aware, XoftSpyXE, RegCure. They are clean at this point. Google search's go off to "other" web pages that intercept the targeted web site. Usually this will happen about 2 times. On the 3rd repeated search I'll get my page. Using Explorer 7.0. Here is my HyjackThis log:

frapuccino, Welcome to ToyCoyote :wavey: My name is sjpritch25 and i will be helping you. As i am still in training here, a teacher must review my fix before i can post it. I will post back as soon as i here back. Thanks for your patience. It shouldn't be long.
I need you to move Hijackthis into a permanent place on your hard drive. Currently, you have it running in a temp folder. I recommend moving it to C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\HIjackthis.exe .

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonny/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts.
You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so.
Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.
Once the desktop loads Save the text that will open (report.txt) to your desktop.

Run HijackThis, and press "Do a System Scan Only".
1. When the scan is complete place a check mark next to the following entries:

O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{3D1E45BE-922A-4F32-A173-C203549BD7AE}: NameServer = 85.255.116.140,85.255.112.11
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{AB3BD144-2815-49EB-8E05-790D2F31DE3D}: NameServer = 85.255.116.140,85.255.112.11
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{DD8DB1D2-A385-46BE-9994-FCA6D707D46A}: NameServer = 85.255.116.140,85.255.112.11
O17 - HKLM\System\CS1\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 85.255.116.140 85.255.112.11
O17 - HKLM\System\CS2\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 85.255.116.140 85.255.112.11
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 85.255.116.140 85.255.112.11

2. After checking these items CLOSE ALL open windows EXCEPT HijackThis and click "Fix Checked."

1) Go to Start > Control Panel >Network Connections. Right click your default connection, usually Local Area Connection or Dial-up Connection if you are using Dial-up, and left click on Properties.
* Make a note of the settings before you change them just in case you need to put them back how they were.
Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and select the radio button that says Obtain DNS servers automatically. Click OK twice.

2) Go to Start > Run, enter CMD and click OK.
  • At the Dos Prompt Screen, type in cd\ and then press .
  • Now type in ipconfig /flushdns and then press . (notice the space after ipconfig)
  • Close the command prompt window.
In your next reply, please include a fresh Hijackthis log and report.txt. Thanks
Here you go:

frapuccino, i still need you to move Hijackthis into a permanent place. If you could just move your Hijackthis Folder to your root drive (Local Disk (C:)) That would suffice. It needs to be moved because of the backups. If you were to run the following programs Ccleaner and ATF Cleaner Hijackthis, its backups would be gone.

Note: You may need to unhide hidden files and folders.
Configure Windows XP to show hide hidden files:
Click Start. Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. Select the View Tab.

Under the Hidden files and folders heading select "Show hidden files and folders".
Uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
Uncheck the "Hide file extensions for known file types" option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.

Please DELETE the following file(s) IF STILL PRESENT. You can use Windows Explorer to navigate or use Windows Search feature to locate them.

Your log is clean !!!!! :

Now that your system is clean you should SET A NEW RESTORE POINT to prevent future reinfection from the old restore point AFTER cleaning your system of any malware infection. Any trojans or spyware you picked up could have been saved in System Restore and are waiting to re-infect you. Since System Restore is a protected directory, your tools can not access it to delete files, trapping viruses inside. Setting a new restore point should be done to prevent any future reinfection from the old restore point and enable your computer to "roll-back" in case there is a future problem.

To SET A NEW RESTORE POINT:
1. Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click "System Restore".
2. Choose the radio button marked "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next". Give the R.P. a name then click "Create". The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore.
3. Then go to Start > Run and type: Cleanmgr
4. Click "OK".
5. Click the "More Options" Tab.
6. Click "Clean Up" in the System Restore section to remove all previous restore points except the newly created one.

Graphics for doing this are in the following links if you need them.
How to Create a Restore Point.
How to use Cleanmgr.

======================================

Here is some useful information on keeping your computer clean:
  • Most important thing is to make sure Windows is kept up to date with the latest patches and updates from Windows Update.
  • If you don't have a Firewall installed, please choose from the following:
  • Here are two great Preventive programs:
    • SpywareBlaster protects you from malicious ActiveX controls and cookies. Make sure and check for updates twice a month.
    • IESpyads adds a long list of bad sites to your Restricted sites in Internet Explorer and protects against drive by downloads.
  • Surf Safe with McAfee's SiteAdisor. SiteAdisor will work with Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox. SiteAdisor is a browser plugin that assigns a safety rating to domains listed in your search engine. SiteAdvisor uses the following color codes to indicate the safety level of each site.
    • Red for Warning
    • Yellow for Use Caution
    • Green for Safe
    • Grey for Unknown
Here are the link to install SiteAdisor in Internet Explorer and Firefox
  • Anti-Spyware Programs I Recommend:
    • Free Anti-Spyware Programs
    • Great Subscription Anti-Spyware Programs
  • For Even More Information On Securing Your Computer read Tony Klein's So How Did I Get Infected In The First Place
Done. Created a restore point and ran cleanmgr. I run Windows Firewall and Charter F-Secure Security Suite. I plan on periodically running a barage of various Spyware detectors. Thanks again for your help! :D
