I currently have both updated versions of Ad-AwareSE and Spybot-search and destroy and have recently scanned and cleared my system of any spyware or adware. After deleting and rebooting I still am having the same problems as before. When I search using internet explorer, I get advertisment pop-ups that I can't seem to get rid of. If you have any idea on what I should do at this point please let me know.

Hi froto623

You are using an expired version of Hijack This. First, please delete the version you are using, then download then new version from here:

http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/hijackthis.zip

133060

Please move Hijack This into a folder of Its own.
Click My Computer, then C:\
In the menu bar, File->New->Folder.
That will create a folder named New Folder, which you can rename to "HJT" or "HijackThis". Now you have C:\HJT\ folder. Put your HijackThis.exe there, and double click to run it.
Failure to do so may mean backups, if needed, will not be available.

Use ctl/alt/delete to bring up Task Manager and Highlight the following, then click on END PROCESS.

Viewpoint and/or Viewpoint Toolbar

LimeWire

PartyPoker

Then go to Start>Settings>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs and Uninstall/Remove:

Viewpoint and/or Viewpoint Toolbar

LimeWire

PartyPoker

Close all programs and windows and run Hijack This.
Place a check against the following items:

The following is an unknown and as such could be Malware. Unless you both know and trust it please fix with Hijack This.

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Ksgkk] C:\WINDOWS\system32\wucrtupd.exe

Click on Fix Checked and exit HijackThis.

Please REBOOT into safe mode by tapping on F8 frequently, during Bootup.

Make sure your settings allow you to view "Hidden files". Open up any explorer windows and click on "Tools" => "Folder Options" => "View" and be sure to check off "Show Hidden Files and Folders".

Open Windows Explorer locate and delete the following Folder(s)/File(s) in Bold while still in SAFE MODE.

C:\Program Files\PartyPoker

C:\Program Files\Viewpoint

C:\Program Files\LimeWire

C:\WINDOWS\system32\mgmr.dll(if it is there)

C:\Documents and Settings\Jason Benfit\Application Data\ttuh.exe

Reboot into normal mode and enable hidden files.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log here, using the Post Reply feature, so I will be notified.
Yes, these directions fixed all the problems that I was having with internet explorer. I am interested in knowing how you knew what boxes to check in Hijackthis? Thank You, Froto623
Hi froto623
I'm pleased to have assisted you. In answer to your question, we have a Classroom here at Tom Coyote with many talented, experienced and very patient Teachers. Along with other things, we learn to read Hijack This logs and to fix the associated problems.

If you don't mind, please post a fresh Hijack This log here, in this string, so we can both be sure your PC is completely clean.

The tips offered below are the same as most here use, to keep safe on the net.

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

Download the new Ad-Aware SE version, and follow the instructions on how to do a full scan: http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php?showtopic=11150
-reboot after using Ad-Aware SE. Also while there get the VX2 plugin and follow the instructions to run it also.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
I also suggest that you delete any files from "temp", "tmp" folders. In Internet Explorer, click on "Tools" => "Internet Options" => "Delete Files" and select the box that says "Delete All Offline Content" and click on "OK" twice. Also, empty the recycle bin by right clicking on it and selecting "Empty Recycle Bin". These steps should be done on a regular basis.

And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place?
