In each case, I have already done a search in the registry for Cyb2k.exe and gdwfil.dll with the "My computer" highlighted, only to come up empty. Yet, as I mentioned, I went to the keys and they were there. So, I am confused. [Ref: Posted Today, 12:07 PM, Posted Yesterday, 11:53 PM]. I don't understand why both the registry search comes up empty and they are not listed at C:\WINDOWS\Cyb2k.exe and C:\WINDOWS\System32\gdwfil.dll. Please advise.
After backing up the registry, I deleted each of those via the registry and restarted the machine. So far, all seems to run well. I wanna thank you for all of your assistance and certainly your valued time. :D It looks to me like this pesky trojan has been vanquished! Wow! Thank you again.
Good Job

Log looks good :D

You need to create a new Clean restore point.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

If you dont have any programs like these, I would recommend that you get them.
Spywareblaster,
Spywareguard.
IE Spyads
They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening.

Also get a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Safe Surfing. :D

So how did I get infected in the first place?

Clean restore point completed. However, as I searched my desktop, low and behold, there is no “My desktop” icon. Yet, when I open Windows Explorer and view the desktop folder, there it is. Huh says I.

Spywareblaster, & Spywareguard. Installed. Yay!

Oh, and just for kicks, two things. 1- When I first posted that I didn’t know how to boot in safe mode, I bet you might-a thought, “oh my, this is gonna be good” . 2- What you didn’t know is that a few years ago, I actually held a job as an assistant “IT”. Yup, ppl asked ME when their box didn’t work. Ooooh, the things I did not and do not know! However, I have learned via this pain of a problem.

Last, this machine runs smoothly. Yay! Again, thank you for your assistance. :D

Question: Is there a checkbox I am missing, that toggles the “My desktop” icon display?
