Yesterday, I opened "fastmp3_setup.exe" only to realize this to be a horrible Trojan. Popups galore AND my Windows firewall has been disabled by this! I cannot reenable the firewall. I ran hijackthis and was intending to post it BUT: I tried to run Maxthon browser & computer locked up and gave me a blue screen with a few address locations. I rebotted and tried to open a browser again; blue screen again. Now I cannot boot the computer. I don't know the sequence [what keys to push] to boot in Safe Mode. It won't boot from the OS CD. OS: XP Currently I have at my disposal with the hope of fixing this problem: l2mfix.exe tis15s1329ete.exe [which is: Trend Micro™ PC-cillin™ Internet Security 30-day free trial of PC-cillin Internet Security] I first need help to get the computer booted. I do have the hijackthis file on that hard drive but cannot access it. [Obviously, I am currently not on that computer] Thanks. Pete P.S. I am so flumoxed by this, I don't even know if I am posting on the correct forum. Please help
» On Windows 2000

Restart your computer in Safe Mode

Press the F8 key, when you see the Starting Windows bar at the bottom of the screen.

Choose the Safe Mode option from the Windows Advanced Options Menu then press Enter.
This can take several miniutes to load.

» On Windows XP

Restart your computer in Safe Mode.

Press F8 after the Power-On Self Test (POST) is done. If the Windows Advanced Options Menu does not appear, try restarting and then pressing F8 several times after the POST screen.
Choose the Safe Mode option from the Windows Advanced Options Menu then press Enter.
This can take several miniutes to load.
Thank you. Success. I have been able to restart the computer in Safe mode & run Hijackthis. Now, more info:

I run Avast as a Virus scan. It found the residue produced by the Trojan "fastmp3_setup.exe".

Reviewing:
Currently I run:
XP
Avast
Adaware
Spybot Search & Destroy

Although I certainly have searched this forum for info on solving this beast, :rant2: I have found precious little.

Here is my Hijackthis Log file: Please help! Thanks! :wavey:

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Thank you so much for your time and help!! :D

I did all of your directions. When I checked the Add/Remove for the ABC Keylogger, I also saw the B888 application and thought, "Okay. THAT shouldn't be there." So I was not surprised to find it in your Hijack list.

Okay, now for how the computer IS or is NOT behaving:

When I try to boot, the computer still continues to cycle, repeating an attempt to boot normally, but fails over and over. I still can only boot in Safe Mode.

When you said, "It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two." you didn't mean that it would repeat attempting to boot, no?

When you said, "It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two." you didn't mean that it would repeat attempting to boot, no?

No.

* Download Combofix to your desktop.
Doubleclick combo.exe
Follow the prompts.
Don't click on the window while the fix is running, because that will cause your system to hang.

When finished, it should produce a log, combofix.txt.
Post this log in your next reply together with a new hijackthislog.
Hi.

Please download AVG Anti-Rootkit to your desktop.

Double-click the installation file
Just click Next, let it go with default settings.
Once the installation is ready, reboot.
Run AVG Anti-Rootkit Beta.exe.
Click Search for rootkits.
When finished, click Save result to file.
Post back with the results. (Not sure where they are located, either in C:\Program Files\GRISOFT\AVG Anti-Rootkit Beta\ folder or on your desktop.)

Re-run combofix

Send:

- a fresh HijackThis log

- AVG Anti-Rootkit report

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment
Fortunately, as soon as this happened, I backed up all of my personal files to CD. I noticed your statement: “Don't use this PC for anything financial.” I understand that to mean “till this is resolved”, yes? As I mentioned, all of my personal files are backed up all to CD. So, I am not adverse to simply reformatting the hard drive if necessary. — As I attempted to boot, the machine got by my “F8” key as I was pressing it. The machine actually was going to boot in normal mode, but I didn’t dare, yet. I ran “AVG Anti-Rootkit Beta.exe” and selected “Search for rootkits”. However, even though I had rebooted, it gave me this message, “Please restart the computer before using AVG Anti-Rootkit Beta” and only had the “OK” button. SO I rebooted and made another attempt, but got the same message again. Possibly this is because I am running in Safe Mode? Also, is it safe to boot in Normal mode? I have dial-up, so there is no possibility of my machine being automatically logged onto the net via cable. Should I now boot in normal mode & try to run AVG Anti-Rootkit Beta.exe?
Success booting in Normal mode.
Success running Anti-Rootkit Beta
As you might have seen, I also have Webroot’s Winwasher; set up to run upon shutdown. Success running Webroot’s Winwasher.
Windows Firewall still can NOT be enabled.
All else appears as it was before the Trojan.

If Jotti is too busy you can try these.

http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus.html

http://www.virustotal.com/en/indexf.html
When I used "http://virusscan.jotti.org", I found that the results for some files did not seem to reflect my input. On the “date” files (Ex: 14-11-16.exe showed the file scanned to be 11.exe) I have noted this below for each file where the results seemed to disagree with my input. Seeing this apparent confusion, I reinput the scan. That is also why the scan results show, “(Note: this file has been scanned before. Therefore, this file's scan results will not be stored in the database)” I also went to "kaspersky.com/scanforvirus" and scanned each of those files. I have those results but have not posted them. Should you need them, I can c/p them.

Also, when I went to shut down, the “Windows Update Shield” showed, indicating that as I shut down, there was a windows update in progress. However, as the machine attempted to update, it went to a Blue Screen. I did not attempt to restart it.

Here are the results for each of those files from http://virusscan.jotti.org.

MIGHT BE INFECTED/MALWARE (Sandbox emulation took a long time and/or runtime packers were found, this is suspicious. Download Pocket Killbox
http://www.atribune.org/downloads/KillBox.exe
If you already have Killbox first ensure it is this version !.

Then double-click on the killbox.exe program.

Start Killbox and click on Tools->Delete Temp Files.
Then select the option labeled Delete on reboot.

Do not close killbox, and open notepad, by clicking on Start, then Run, and typing notepad.exe and pressing the OK button.

When notepad is open, copy and paste the following bolded text into the notepad screen. You do this by highlighting each of the below bolded filenames and then pressing Control-C on your keyboard. Then click on the open notepad windows and press Control-V to paste the contents into the notepad.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\lzx32.sys
C:\WINDOWS\system32\msltus40.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\15-11-15.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\Peter\EKRJ.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\14-11-16.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\14-11-12.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\15-11-15.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\13-11-23.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\msasvc.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\13-11-21.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\inst.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\install.exe

Return to Killbox, go to the File menu and select Paste from Clipboard.

Still in Killbox, click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click No at the Pending Operations prompt.

If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually

"copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Instructions followed. However, following the Killbox “Reboot” prompt, there was no “Pending Operations” prompt. The machine simple shut down. Restart was successful. The Windows Firewall continues to be disabled and I am unable to re-enable.

Once again, when I went to shut down, the “Windows Update Shield” showed, indicating that as I shut down, there was a windows update in progress. However, as the machine attempted to update, it went to a Blue Screen. Again, I did not attempt to restart it.

I gather that your request, “c/p a new log file into this thread.” is a request for a new HJT log file:
