This is a DELL Dimension 4500, Win XP, doesn't show that SP2 has been installed (this belongs to a friend that I am
helping. His daughter had been using it at college.).
He said he ran an online scan for spyware (SBC Yahoo Online Protection) and let it delete some spyware that it found.
After that, the computer would not boot into normal Windows mode, it will however boot into safe mode.
System Restore shows that there are many restore points listed extending back to July 2006. But when I choose a date and
go through the procedure and reboots it displays the message "Restore to x-x-06 failed". This failure happens for any of
the dates I have tried.
I used an USB memory stick to copy these programs to his computer: Ad-Aware SE Personal, SpyBot S&D, AVGAS 7.5; I also
copied their latest definition files for each of these programs. I ran each of these programs and quarantined the several
spyware objects that they found. This did not solve the problem; it still will only boot up in safe mode.
I have now copied Hijackthis to his computer, ran it and copied the resulting log file back to my computer which is
listed below.
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide to determine if spyware is still on this computer and causing this
problem.
