Google Selections Getting Hijacked

Hi Folks,

Looks like I'm getting hijacked when I select from my Google "hits". When I Google something, say for example "Asparagus", I get thousands of hits like "Green Acres Aparagus Farm", "Aunt Betty's Recipe for Asparagus Soup", etc. Below each "hit" is a url. The url's are legitimate. If I copy the url into my browser address field then I will go to that address. HOWEVER, if I click on the TITLE of the hit, for instance "Aunt Betty's Recipe for Asparagus Soup" I will get directed to something like "http://btcar.com/etc/etc/etc/etc=asparagus". The redirection varies. Sometimes it's camoflage clothing, sometimes an online casino, another search engine called "Second Click", etc. NOW, if I hit the "back" button and re-select my original Google hit it will always go to the proper url. In other words, "it" only tries to redirect once per selection. Sounds a little more sophisticated than the usual malware. The redirection ONLY happens when I use Google, not when I use Alta Vista, for example. The redirection ONLY happens when I am running in regular mode. If I boot up in safe mode with networking I can Google all day long with no problem. I'd really appreciate any help you could suggest, and I will be happy to run whatever tests you suggest or provide additional information about my system.

Hi,

Welcome to TomCoyote forums. Please do the following.

• Disable your Symantec Script Blocking from within your Norton so it does not interfere with anything during our fixes now or later. You can enable this whenever we have verified that your system is clean.
To disable Norton AntiVirus Script Blocking:
1. Start Norton AntiVirus.
If Norton AntiVirus is installed as part of Norton SystemWorks or Norton Internet Security, then start that program.
2. Click Options.
If you see a menu, click Norton AntiVirus.
3. In the left pane, click Script Blocking.
4. In the right pane, uncheck Enable Script Blocking (recommended).
5. Click OK.

• Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.
http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.zip
Extract all the files to your Destop. A folder named SmitfraudFix will be created on your Desktop.

• Download and install AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5.
(This is Ewdio 4.0 renamed. If you already have Ewido installed, please update to this version which has a special "clean driver" for removing persistent malware)
1. After download, double click on the file to launch the install process.
2. Choose a language, click "OK" and then click "Next".
3. Read the "License Agreement" and click "I Agree".
4. Accept default installation path: C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5, click "Next", then click "Install".
5. After setup completes, click "Finish" to start the program automatically or launch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking its icon on your desktop or in the system tray.
6. The main "Status" menu will appear. Select "Change state" to inactivate 'Resident Shield' and 'Automatic Updates'.
7. Then right click on AVG Anti-Spyware in the system tray and uncheck "Start with Windows".
8. Go to Start > Run and type: services.msc
  • Press "OK".
  • Click the "Extended tab" and scroll down the list to find AVG Anti-Spyware guard.
  • When you find the guard service, double-click on it.
  • In the Properties Window > General Tab that opens, click the "Stop" button.
  • From the drop-down menu next to "Startup Type", click on "Manual".
  • Now click "Apply", then "OK" and close the Services window.
9. Select the "Update" button and click "Start update". Wait until you see the "Update succesfull message. If you are having problems with the updater, manually update with the AVG Anti-Spyware Full database installer from here. Exit AVG Anti-Spyware when done - DO NOT perform a scan yet.

This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns, so please be patient while it works. It will create a file named: C:\rapport.txt

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other options until you are asked to do so!

Note: The file process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool." It is not a virus but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs; therefore, they may alert the user.

• Post back with the C:\rapport.txt and a new HijackThis log.
Thanks!

OK, I've done as requested.

Here's rapport.txt and a new HijackThis scan……..

Hi,

The log shows that you have a rootkit present on your system, so please do the following.

• Start HijackThis, click System Scan Only and place a checkmark next to the following item:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [dmsll.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\dmsll.exe

Close ALL browsers and open windows/programs except HijackThis and click 'Fix Checked'.

Reboot your computer.

• Download IceSword.
Note: Because it is a RAR file, you will need 7-Zip to unpack it.

Extract it to your Desktop.

1. Double-click on IceSword.exe

2. Use the registry function in IceSword to see if the following pe386 service autostart key exists:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\pe386

3. If it does exist, then right-click on pe386 and select the Delete option from the menu that opens.

4. Use the registry function again to see if the following key exists:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\msguard

5. If it does exist, then right-click on msguard and select the Delete option from the menu that opens.

• Reboot your computer and post a fresh HijackThis log. Let me know if you successfully deleted the two registry keys, and if encountered any problems while you were following the instructions I posted.
Hi Waterfall,

This is wierd. I've rebooted twice since the last post. I did a HijackThis scan each time, and each time the second-to-last entry in the 04's came up with a different file name. First it was dmsll.exe, which you flagged as a rootkit, then it was dmgip.exe, now it's dmuuw.exe. Each time it seems to be a file name of the form "DMxxx.EXE". Also, in each case, I find the file of THAT name in C:\Windows\System32\ but the previous one is missing. It's almost as if the thing is creating a new file with a different name every time. It's like it's trying to "hide". I unpacked IceSword and searched for the registry entries you described, but no luck. Didn't find them. I tested Google again and I'm still getting hijacked in the form described earlier.
I guess the good news is that if these observations are correct then we've identified repeatable behavior. Naturally the bad news is that I haven't a clue what to do about it.

Here's my latest HijackThis log. Notice the entry "O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [dmuuw.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\dmuuw.exe". That seems to have replaced "O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [dmgip.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\dmgip.exe", which in turn replaced "O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [dmsll.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\dmsll.exe"

???(!!!)

Thanks,

-Luther

HALLELUYAH!!!!! I did a HighjackThis "fix" on the latest iteration of this nasty little snake (dmuuw.exe). I've rebooted twice, scanned each time, and tested for the Google hijack. In each case the scan came up negative for "DMxxx.EXE" and the Google hijack never reared it's ugly head. I think this thing is DEAD, or at least dormant. If it does revive I know a whole lot more about it than I did before. Thanks Waterfall. You pointed me in the right direction. It's getting late and I'm going to shut down and go to bed, as tomorrow is a work day, but tomorrow I'll put some money in my PayPal account and make a donation. Good luck. May the force be with you. -W
Whoa! Let me clarify for you. You didn't post back to let me know if you were able to delete those two registry keys in IceSword. The pe386/msguard is the rootkit. It also has a driver which we have to delete. The dm*.exe file is part of smitfraud which we haven't done yet. It doesn't always show in HijackThis, so you still have smitfraud.
You need to print these directions because you will be working in Safe Mode for part of the time.

• As long as your file system is NTFS, then download ADS Spy and save it to your Desktop.
- Read here how to unzip/extract properly:
http://metallica.geekstogo.com/xpcompressedexplanation.html
- Run ADS Spy, select the "Full scan (all NTFS Drives)" option.
- Uncheck the "Ignore safe system info data streams" option.
- The "Quick Scan" option should be unchecked.
- Finally, click "Scan the system for alternate data streams" button.
- If C:\Windows\System32:lzx32.sys is found, just highlight it by clicking onto it and then clicking "Remove selected stream"
- Exit the program.

• Reboot your computer.

• Now reboot into SAFE MODE.
To get into the Windows XP Safe Mode, restart your computer and, just before Windows starts to load, tap the F8 key a few times. Choose Safe Mode from the menu that will appear and press Enter.

• Open the SmitfraudFix Folder, then double-click smitfraudfix.cmd file to start the tool.
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?" answer Yes by typing Y and hit Enter.

[external image: Posted Image]

The tool will also check if wininet.dll is infected. If a clean version is found, you will be prompted to replace wininet.dll. Answer Yes to the question "Replace infected file ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.

A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process, if you computer does not restart automatically please do it yourself manually. Reboot in Safe Mode.

The tool will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

• Reboot into Normal Mode.

• Download Superantispyware
  • Load Superantispyware and click the check for updates button.
  • Once the update is finished click the scan your computer button.
  • Check Perform Complete Scan and then next.
  • Superantispyware will now scan your computer and when its finished it will list all the infections it has found.
  • Make sure that they all have a check next to them and press next.
  • Click finish and you will be taken back to the main interface.
  • Click Preferences and then click the statistics/logs tab. Click the dated log and press view log and a text file will appear.
  • Copy and paste the log onto the forum.
• Post back with the rapport.txt, the log from Superantispyware and a new HijackThis log. Let me know how everything went.
Hi Waterfalls,

Yes, as I thought about it some more I realized that the dm*.exe was probably a product of the infection, not the root cause. In my next-to-last post from yesterday you will see that I did run IceSword but was unable to find the registry entries.

I've run ADS SPY but did not find C:\Windows\System32\lzx32.sys. I've run SmitfraudFix in safe mode and downloaded and run SuperAntispyware per your instructions. The resulting rapport.txt, SuperAntispyware log, and HijackThis log are attached below.

I'm a little dismayed with the failure of my Norton Internet Security to stop or even detect this infection, the fact that Symantec's website contains very little information on it, AND the fact that Symantec recently offerred to help me with this for a substantial addional charge. Given the quality of their so-called "tech support" I have suffered with in the past on unrelated issues I was not inclined to accept their offer. Do you have some thoughts on this? I ran across a quote in my browsings: "Security is not a product. It is a process." Obviously the Norton Internet Security product is not even close to being a comprehensive solution. Do you have a security regimen that you recommend?

Thanks,

Warren

Hi,

I will make suggestions for you in my last post. In the interim, regarding an Anti-Virus program, Kaspersky has the highest detection rate according to a recent study.
http://www.virus.gr/english/fullxml/default.asp?id=82

You should also have a personal firewall program, so if you're thinking of switching, look at Kaspersky's Internet Security 6.0

In your Trusted Zone, you have three sites connected with US Natural Resources, Inc. Did you intentionally set this? If so and if that's what you want, then leave them. If not, then remove them from your Trusted Zone. They are the O15 entries in your HijackThis log.

Also, you have one O16 that allowed an ActiveX to be downloaded to your computer. It appears to be a firewall routing IP address, but I would need you to confirm this.

Additionally, I would like you to run one more tool to confirm that the rootkit is not present.

• Download Sophos-Anti-Rootkit: http://www.sophos.com/products/free-tools/…ti-rootkit.html
  • Place it on your desktop.
  • Doubleclick sarsfx.exe to extract the files. Leave the default settings.
  • Open the folder C:\SOPHTEMP and doubleclick sargui.exe to start the program.
  • Make sure next are checked:
    o Running processes
    o Windows Registry
    o Local Hard Drives
  • Click the "Start Scan" button.
  • Click the "OK" button after you get the notification that the scan has finished. Close the program. Do not check anything in it yet because legitimate entries may be present there as well!
  • Then, go to Start > Run and copy/paste next in the field: %temp%\sarscan.log
  • This should open the log from the rootkit scan. Post back with the log in your next reply.
Hi, Everything is fine with the trusted sites entries. They were set at the direction of our IT guys so I can download work related info at home. The 016 entry having to do with the IP address is a wireless IP-Cam I bought to try to find out which of my cats is peeing in the living room. No problem there (well, not a computer problem anyway). Here's the Sophos scan log Sophos Anti-Rootkit Version 1.0 © 2006 Sophos Plc Started logging on 10/25/2006 at 17:28:06 PM Hidden: registry item \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\DeterministicNetworks\DNE\Parameters\SymbolicLinkValue Stopped logging on 10/25/2006 at 17:32:34 PM Thanks, Warren
Hi,

That key looks okay. It appears to be VPN-related. You can read the link below for confirmation.
http://www.deterministicnetworks.com/support/dnefaq.asp

• If you have not done so, please empty your Recycle Bin.

• Create a new Restore Point:
- Go to Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Restore.
- When the utility opens, select "Create a new restore point" and click Next
- Name the restore point - something like "After infection cleaned" or "After cleaning"
- Click Create.

• Delete the old Restore Points:
- Go to Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Disk Cleanup. Click Ok.
- Click the "More Options" tab.
- Where it states "System Restore" - click Clean up.
- All of the old Restore Points will be deleted EXCEPT for the one you just created.

Reboot your computer.

• To keep this clean in the future, I would suggest the following things:

• Install Spywareblaster. SpywareBlaster doesn't scan and clean for so-called spyware but prevents it from being installed in the first place. It blocks the popular spyware ActiveX controls and also prevents the installation of any of them via a webpage. Update it periodically.

* Avoid illegal sites because that's where most malware is present.
* Don't click on links inside pop-ups. If you should get them, use ALT + F4 to close them.
* Don't click on links in spam messages claiming to offer anti-spyware software because most of these so-called removers ARE spyware.
* Download free software only from sites you know and trust because a lot of free software can bundle other software, including spyware.

• Let your anti-spyware scanner(s) scan frequently and don't forget to update before scanning.

• I suggest you perform an online virus-scan once in a while (Housecall and/or Bitdefender) because what one virus-scanner can't find, another one maybe can.
Also, make sure that your virus-scanner, the one that is already installed on your system, is always up to date!

• Make sure your Windows has the latest updates by going here.

• Consider switching to Mozilla Firefox.
This browser is considered to be far more secure than Internet Explorer and offers improved pop-up blocking. If you do decide to install Firefox, please read Switching from IE to Firefox.

• More information on how to prevent malware can be found at So how did I get infected in the first place? (by Tony Klein) and Malware Prevention: Prevent Re-infection.

Happy surfing again! :)
You're quite welcome - glad I could help.
