When I do a web search, one of two things happens:

1) My results page comes up for a second and then I am quickly redirected to a site trying to sell me something somewhat related to what I searched for; or
2) My results page comes up and when I click on the result I want, I am redirected in a similar fashion.

The page I'm redirected to is different all the time. Sometimes it is eBay. This problem happens regardless of whether I am using Firefox or IE7 OR whether I am using Google or Yahoo search. I have not tried other engines. Often, the redirect seems to have something to do with "findology" as I see that word pop up in the lower left hand corner of my brower as the redirect occurs. If I stay away from search engines, I am fine. Problem is, I use them all the time! I have run CWS Shredder, AdAware, and Spybot. CWS found nothing. The other two found cookies only, which I blew away.

Last night, I disabled Google Toolbar and killed some other add-ons through IE and the problem vanished for 1/2 day. Now, despite the fact that those add-ons are still killed, the problem is back in full force. Maybe my actions had no bearing. Who knows. I had something come up and prompt me to update Viewpoint Manager before the problem re-emerged, but I did not accept the update and even went and deleted viewpoint manager. This issue has me want to kill everything!! :blink:

In addition to "findology", I am finding that my redirects are occurring through the following ip / dns addresses: 67.29.139.220 and 85.255.119.194.

Here is my HJT Log: (thanks!!)

Hello and welcome to TC. :)

You are running HijackThis from your desktop at the moment. It needs to be placed in a folder of its own. Please right click on an empty space on your dektop and click on New>Folder to create a new folder. Name the folder "HijackThis" . Drag and drop the HijackThis.exe on your desktop into the new folder for it to function properly.

The description you are giving is specific to a certain infection but I cannot see any visible signs of it in your log. Still, we better run the tool to be sure.

Please disable Windows Defender so that it will not interfere with the fixes:

To disable Windows Defender:
  • Open Windows Defender
  • Click Tools
  • Click General Settings
  • Scroll down to Real Time Protection Options
  • Uncheck Turn on Real Time Protection (recommended)
  • After you uncheck this, click on the Save button
  • Close Windows Defender
Once your log is clean you can re-enable Windows Defender Real Time Protection.

=======================================

Please download FixWareout by LonnyRJones from one of these sites and save it to your desktop.

http://downloads.sub.../Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingc.../Fixwareout.exe

  • Run Fixwareout.
  • Click Next,
  • then Install,
  • make sure Run fixit is checked
  • and click Finish.
  • The fix will begin; follow the prompts.
  • You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so.
  • Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.
When you run fixwareout , simply follow the prompts, you will need to restart when prompted.

Once the desktop loads a text file will open (report.txt), you can close it - the file has already been saved.

=========================

Run HijackThis. Click "Do a System Scan Only" , and place a check next to the following items (if found):

O15 - Trusted Zone: http://*.trymedia.com (HKLM)

Click FIX CHECKED. Close HijackThis.

=========================

Restart your computer.

=========================

CAUTION!: It is possible that your Internet Service Provider requires specific settings here. Make sure you know if you need specific DNS settings here or not before you proceed to make the following changes or you may lose your internet connection. If you are sure you do not need a specific DNS address here, you may proceed.
(Unless your Internet Service Provider requires specific DNS settings)
Once back in Windows, close all web browsers.
  • Go into Control Panel>Network Connections.
  • Right click on your connection
  • and click Properties.
  • On the Properties page, highlight Internet Protocol(TCP/IP)
  • Click Properties. This will bring up another page.
  • Select Obtain DNS Server Automatically.
  • Click the ok button. The page will close.
  • Press ok on the page in front of you.
  • Go to Start > Run and type in cmd
  • Click OK.
  • This will open a command prompt.
  • Type or copy and paste the following line in the command window:
  • ipconfig /flushdns
  • Hit Enter
  • Exit the command window
  • Restart the computer.
  • Start the Internet and IE.
  • Open this file c:\fixwareout\report.txt and post the contents of it and a new HijackThis log please.
Finally, please post the contents of the text file that opened earlier (you can find it at C:\fixwareout\report.txt ), along with a new HijackThis log into this topic.

Thanks for jumping in to help!!!!!

I don't think that I had / have Windows Defender running. I couldn't find it anywhere. I also did not find *trymedia running HJT. I DID see that earlier today and figured there couldn't be any harm in killing it, so I did! As I said, I was in KILL EVERYTHING mode out of sheer frustration!!

Here is my HJT log, followed by the fixwareout text file. Thanks again!

Hi,

You're welcome.

I don't think that I had / have Windows Defender running. I couldn't find it anywhere

Well, it's running but hidden, and these are the lines of proof in your log, but don't worry about it now.

C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MsMpEng.exe
C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MSASCui.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Windows Defender] "C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MSASCui.exe" -hide

===============================

I was in KILL EVERYTHING mode out of sheer frustration!!

I hope you did not kill anything that would harm your system though. ;)

Anyway, let's do a couple more scans to make sure that there is nothing else hiding. Please print these instructions so that you'll have access to them later when you're in Safe Mode.

Please download Ccleaner and save it to your desktop.
Tutorial for CCleaner
During the installation be sure to UN-check the box for "Ccleaner Yahoo Toolbar" unless you want it. Do not scan with it yet.

================================

Please download Posted ImageAVG Anti-Spyware to your Desktop or to your usual Download Folder.
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
  • Install AVG Anti-Spyware by double clicking the installer.
  • Follow the prompts. Make sure that Launch AVG Anti-Spyware is checked.
  • On the main screen under Your Computer's security.
    • Click on Change state next to Resident shield. It should now change to inactive.
    • Click on Change state next to Automatic updates. It should now change to inactive.
    • Next to Last Update, click on Update now. (You will need an active internet connection to perform this)
    • Wait until you see the Update succesfull message.
  • Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware Tray Icon and uncheck Start with Windows.
