I'm desperate. I took last Friday off so that I could finish up some last minute wedding woes and first thing that happens is my PC gets infected…no not infected, INFESTED with PC critters. I've run every scan that's recommended, spent countless days cross eyed and stupified and I've come to this conclusion…I absolutely cannot handle this alone. Time to call in the big guns. It looks like everyone is posting hijackthis logs, so I'll do the same.
Here goes…

Please help…pulling clumps of hair out 24 days before my wedding is bound to do some damage…
Thanks-
Kelsey
Hi,

• Please download Combofix: http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/combofix.exe
and save to the desktop.

1. Double click on combo.exe & follow the prompts.
2. When finished, it will produce a logfile located at C:\ComboFix.txt.
3. Post the contents of that log in your next reply with a new hijackthis log.

Notes:
* Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause your system to stall/hang.
* Do not proceed with the rest of the fix if you fail to run combofix
* Disable script blocking if you have NAV installed so it will not interfere with the fix. Trojan Hunter has been reported to detect combofix as Worm.Qiv.100

• Post back with the combofix.txt log and a new HijackThis log.
Ok. I ran combofix and a new HJT log. Thanks for any additional help waterfalls.
-Kelsey

Hi, I haven't forgotten about you. There's a registry key that I want a second opinion about. I'll be posting as soon as I get an answer to it.
Hi,

There's an entry that looks like you disabled BITS in msconfig. Did you disable it? If so, you need to re-enable it in order to download windows updates, etc.

• Then go to Start > Run and copy/paste: sc delete ZBQKOCJ > Click OK

• Please set your system to show all files.
- Click Start.
- Open My Computer.
- Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
- Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files
and folders.
- Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
- Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
- Click Yes to confirm.
- Click OK.

• Reboot into SAFE MODE.
To get into the Windows XP Safe Mode, restart your computer and, just before Windows starts to load, tap the F8 key a few times. Choose Safe Mode from the menu that will appear and press Enter.

• Start HijackThis, click System Scan Only and place a checkmark next to the following items:
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = 4O_MMSBSoftware\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\MainSearch Bar
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [hcuvnhb.dll] C:\WINDOWS\System32\rundll32.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\hcuvnhb.dll,bjxymoe
O23 - Service: ZBQKOCJ - Unknown owner - C:\DOCUME~1\KELSEY~1.HOT\LOCALS~1\Temp\ZBQKOCJ.exe (file missing)

Close ALL browsers and open windows/programs except HijackThis and click 'Fix Checked'.

• Navigate to and delete the following files if present:
C:\Windows\system32\hcuvnhb.dll
C:\Windows\system32\bjxymoe.dll
C:\Documents and Settings\KELSEY~1.HOT\Local Settings\Temp\ZBQKOCJ.exe

• Reboot into Normal Mode.

• Download Superantispyware
  • Load Superantispyware and click the check for updates button.
  • Once the update is finished click the scan your computer button.
  • Check Perform Complete Scan and then next.
  • Superantispyware will now scan your computer and when its finished it will list all the infections it has found.
  • Make sure that they all have a check next to them and press next.
  • Click finish and you will be taken back to the main interface.
  • Click Preferences and then click the statistics/logs tab. Click the dated log and press view log and a text file will appear.
  • Copy and paste the log onto the forum.
• Post back with the Superantispyware log and a new HijackThis log. Let me know if you re-enabled "BITS" in msconfig. Also, how is your computer running now?

Waterfalls, thanks for the assist thus far. My PC is running much better. So what do the new logs tell you?
Hi,

Your log looks clean. Superantispyware got rid of the rest of the malware.

• I see that you have three Anti-Virus ("AV") programs installed on your system. Having more than one AV installed will likely cause your system to run slowly and/or become unstable as well as seriously decrease the reliable detection of any malware since the two AV's will likely "compete" against each other.
I suggest that you uninstall Avast and keep the other two AV programs. However, you must disable the real-time component of one AV, keeping it as an on-demand scanner, while the other AV will provide a real-time protection.

• It's difficult to ascertain if you have a firewall program installed. If you do not, you need to install one.
Agnitum Outpost Free -or- Kerio are good FREE software Firewall programs.
See, Understanding and Using Firewalls

• I see that you have Weatherbug installed. While this is not spyware, it is considered to be adware. On the other hand, Weatherbug claims that their product does not serve pop-ups, as long as you specifically select the custom install options and choose to not install the spyware. You can get basically the same functionality without the pop-ups by downloading the spyware-free Weather Pulse. It is your choice whether to keep the program or not.

Should you decide to uninstall Weatherbug, make sure the program is not running before uninstalling it. If there is a WeatherBug icon in the system tray (in the lower right hand corner of the screen by the clock) you'll need to right-click on it and choose "Exit WeatherBug" or "Terminate Weatherbug".
- Then, go to Start -> Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs
- Scroll down until you see Weatherbug
- Select Weatherbug by clicking it
- Click the Remove button and follow the directions.
- Exit.

Reboot your computer.

• You are allowing way too many cookies to be set and, therefore, you need to change your settings for cookies.
In Firefox, click Tools -> Options - Privacy tab -> Cookies tab
- Tick "Allow sites to set Cookies"
- Tick "for the originating site only"
- Do not tick "unless I have removed cookies from this site"
- In "Keep Cookies" - select either "ask me every time" or "until I close Firefox" (whichever you prefer)
- Click OK
- When you do accept cookies, choose the option "Session Only"
In Internet Explorer, click Tools -> Internet Explorer -> Privacy tab
- Tick "Override automatic cookie handling"
- Under "First-party Cookies" - tick "Prompt"
- Under "Third-party Cookies - tick "Block"
- Click OK and Apply
Rule of thumb: Don't accept cookies for every site - be selective. You can deny most cookies, and you will be blocked from most of the tracking cookies.

• If you have not done so, please empty your Recycle Bin.

• Create a new Restore Point:
- Go to Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Restore.
- When the utility opens, select "Create a new restore point" and click Next
- Name the restore point - something like "After infection cleaned" or "After cleaning"
- Click Create.

• Delete the old Restore Points:
- Go to Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Disk Cleanup. Click Ok.
- Click the "More Options" tab.
- Where it states "System Restore" - click Clean up.
- All of the old Restore Points will be deleted EXCEPT for the one you just created.

Reboot your computer.

• To keep this clean in the future, I would suggest the following things:

• Install Spywareblaster. SpywareBlaster doesn't scan and clean for so-called spyware but prevents it from being installed in the first place. It blocks the popular spyware ActiveX controls and also prevents the installation of any of them via a webpage. Update it periodically.

* Avoid illegal sites because that's where most malware is present.
* Don't click on links inside pop-ups. If you should get them, use ALT + F4 to close them.
* Don't click on links in spam messages claiming to offer anti-spyware software because most of these so-called removers ARE spyware.
* Download free software only from sites you know and trust because a lot of free software can bundle other software, including spyware.

• Let your anti-spyware scanner(s) scan frequently and don't forget to update before scanning.

• I suggest you perform an online virus-scan once in a while (Housecall and/or Bitdefender) because what one virus-scanner can't find, another one maybe can.
Also, make sure that your virus-scanner, the one that is already installed on your system, is always up to date!

• Make sure your Windows has the latest updates by going here.

• Consider switching to Mozilla Firefox.
This browser is considered to be far more secure than Internet Explorer and offers improved pop-up blocking. If you do decide to install Firefox, please read Switching from IE to Firefox.

• More information on how to prevent malware can be found at So how did I get infected in the first place? (by Tony Klein) and Malware Prevention: Prevent Re-infection.

Happy surfing again! :)
