Okay, so I'm new here and not really sure how to go about it all (I did read the Read this first stuff, honest) but here is my scanlog. I'd be very grateful for any help/info you could supply.

Perhaps I'm just being a worry-wart, but this stuff is scary.

I greatly appreciate you people offering your knowledge and skills to the unknown (if not unwashed) masses. Thanks for that!

Best regards,
Scait

(edited because I really have No clue … and left out the scan - where is that red face smilie when you need it?)
Go to add/remove programs and look for New.Net or NewDot.Net and remove.

Please download and run CWShredder. Make sure that all browser windows are closed with the exception of Cwshredder and choose FIX.

http://www.softpedia.com/get/Internet/Popu…WShredder.shtml

REBOOT

Please download and run Spybot Search & Destroy and AdAware. Then follow the instructions in the links below to run.

Spybot Tutorial

AdAware Tutorial

Please do an online scan,

Panda >>> http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/co…n_principal.htm

Make sure that you choose "fix" or "clean".

Reboot and post a new HiJackThis log by clicking on "add reply" at the bottom right.
Siggyx -

Thanks for the swift response. I've followed the instructions as best I could. Removed a Newdot thingie from the program list, and ran Cwshredder, rebooted and ran Spybot (which congratulated me for being clean) then AdAware which found three 33 threats and 25 negligibles (fixed 'em).

I then opened the panda link and scanned the entire system, this found 22 items but (see below) didn't remove them. Although it's noted in the instructions that I should choose "fix"or "clean" neither of these options appeared. Status for the items found says "No disinfected". Thinking I'd missed a prompt or something I ran this again and got the same thing.

Anyway, I restarted and got the following message:

RUNDLL
error loading C:\PROGRA~1\NEWDOT~1\NEWDOT~1.DLL
The specified module could not be found.

While I was writing that down, I got another notice saying that my security settings had detected a problem and needed to shut down. Which it did.

I ran another Hijack this scan and am including it here, but I'm guessing that my troubles aren't over.

I should proabably mention that after posting on the site yesterday I loaded EZAntivirus (it also seems to think my system is clean).

Anyway, further help is greatly appreciated.

Regards,
scait

Have done as instructed. The Microsoft beta thing found 11 items including 2 new.net browser modifiers. For some reason it removed one and ignored the other but I (perhaps I will be sorry?) changed this and removed it too. There are two quarrantined items. After completing the scan/fix spybot sent a "detected change" message which had the new data as New.net startup (old data was Progra~1\NewDot~1\NewDot~1.DLL).

After restarting the computer I got the same RUNDLL message as before (Error loading C:\Progra~1\NewDot~1\NewDot~1.DLL the specified module could not be found) which makes me worried that someone/something still has their grubby little hands on my compaq.

Sorry this part is a bit long - skip it if you like - I'm just wondering if there's a problem and revealling just how little I know about this stuff.

I have (I'm too much of a clod to know if it's a problem or just an annoyance) this thing where parts of pages I've closed are left (still visible) on parts of pages opened. Yesterday while going through the instructions you gave I had a variation (part of the control panel was visible on the add and remove list) while both were open. Is this a sign/symptom of something? The only other thing that happens to my computer is that it is sometimes slow (10-15 minutes instead of the usual 5ish) to start up and about twice a year it becomes extremely weird for a couple of days.

The reason I came to this forum was that last Firday (April 8) I downloaded a 3 month trial of Panda Platinum from the link provided in my computer's security center. On Saturday the computer became unfathomably slow. Seriously slow - like taking 3 hours to open Control panel. I tried and tried to do a system restore but it would send messages like: this system cannot be protected by system control, restart computer or the control panel would disappear as if closed and nothing would occur for hours and hours. I tried removing the Panda thng I'd installed the night before without any luck. On Tuesday I started the computer at 7am and by 11 system restore had begun. It finished at 5:30 pm and everything has been okay since then.

New.Net is a pain and can import nasties into your system. The reason that your system slowed to a crawl is that you probably had 2 active anti virus programs running at once which is never a good thing as they usually dont like each othe and cause confilcts. Scan with hijackthis and put a check beside these lines and choose FIX R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar,LinksFolderName = R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file) O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [New.net Startup] rundll32 C:\PROGRA~1\NEWDOT~1\NEWDOT~1.DLL,NewDotNetStartup -s Then reboot and post a new log please.
Siggyx

By Jove, I think you've cracked it!

The first fix got rid of HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar,LinksFolderName
R3 Default URLSearchHook is missing and
03 Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4 b683-905236F6F655} - no file

Unfortunately, on restart I still got that RUNDLL message. I ran the fix again and the Search,SearchAssistant and Search,CustomizeSearch were removed. On the third go New.net was finally cleared. (Yippee!)

The fourth clean up did nothing but the fifth go got rid of the two Main.Local Page = doohickies.

So I am sooooo haaapppy as a leetle gurrrl! (Of course this may be because I don't know any better). Here is the new (and, fingers crossed, clean) hijackthis log:

If I may pick your expert brain a wee bit more: I'm concerned about having more than one anti virus program if it causes problems. At the time I bought my computer it came with a 9 month Norton thingie. When that expired I downloaded a free version. I've done this a couple of times (with various versions of various time periods) and this week downloaded the EZAntivirus program 'cause it's free, good for a year and Tom Coyote uses it too. Since I also had Panda on here for a bit too (as well the stuff you suggested), there's probably bits and piece of several antivirals on the computer, should these be removed?

Once again I thank you for the help you've given. I'd use the bowing smilie but it's not available here.

Very best regards,
scait
Log looks good.

In reagrds to ani virus programs, yes have only 1 resident on your system. Clean out all the left over stuff from the other ones you have had in the past.

Glad I could help :)

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Glad I was able to help.
